    AI is almost pure math and computing,

    No it's not pure maths since theorems like Godels, exclude the posiblity of intelligent finite state automata. When I was doing post grad stuff in Pure maths (Logic/Abtract Algebras) all the pure mathematicians I knew laughed at any one who even believed in such things.

    Okay, the above poster is just being stupid.

    No if you look closely you'll find it's someone a hell of a lot closer to home who's being "stupid", as for all that clap trap about giving spammers, "incentive" to stop spamming, sadly the only thing that could hope to get through the thick skins of these asholes is abuse etc, get it through your thick skulls Guys only asholes spam, no nice person ever spamed anyone, why? because spaming is "nasty". some one really needs to apply the clue stick to some people.

    Regardless of anyone's single belief, SPAM is still not a felony.

    No one said it was the parent to your post said "No i didn't say that spamming is the same as murder, but it is a haneous activity that an individual shouldn't simply be able to walk away from untouched." That is it's a bad thing to spam. and it should be illegal, that it isn't just shows that the law has some catchup to do.

    A fix for this is union mounts (ref. Plan 9). Just merge all the bin directories into /bin and be done with it. If there are name clashes bind the offending package's bin directory in a subdirectory of /bin and use names such as some-package/shutdown for instance.

    Interesting I don't suppose we have this in linux at the moment, but what we really need is the means to create alternate views of the file system, sym links solve some of this, but we need more. Then these ignorant types wouldn't try to destroy a perfectly logical system, just because they don't understand it. All they want is a view, theres no need to throw the baby out with the bath water.

    So true, many beginners think things should be different, but most have the brains to let let there thoughts mature before doing. Can the Unix file system be improved on => yes, is this better => no. what they should have done was used an alternate file system + sym links to create an alternate view, after all thats all they want. As for changing the name of root to gobo ???, I suspect this may have some dangerous draw backs but I cannot say what.

    Yeah, Mitnick problem is people need to find safe ways to test if he has reformed, also one cannot but be suspicious of this cult hero status he has, and the way he seams to revel in it, it gives the appearance that he has no remorse (i.e. is not reformed).

    This is a typical Australian head-in-the-sand position (IAAA): 'ban' it and it will go away. Unfortunately Senator Alston does not seem to appreciate that we are connected to the rest of the world by this internet thing, and it may just be that courts in Russia and China will not recognise Australian juristiction in this matter. It would be better if they saved their breath and did something useful like investigate some sort of token-based email, and maybe funded its development.

    what can I say, firstly why was this troll (the parent) moderated Interesting when it's clearly a Troll?, still I'll answer Sad Loser (625938) rubbish, if you bothered to read the article this law will do heaps of good, if I as an Aussie spam you, then no matter where you are in the world you can go me becuase I will have broken Australian law, which will mean that no one living under Australian durestiction could safely spam, if enough countries do this then we'll seriouly impact spam, better yet if this is just a first step in getting an international agreement going, and if enough countries play ball, then we can kick anyone who won't of the net, hence very little spam.

    I hate to tell you guys, but your country has become a police state, not a real real bad people disapeared left right and centre one, not yet but if due proccess can be subverted then a police state it is. I'm an Aussie I could Just say only in America, and assume that it doesn't affect me, but if one western nation can go this way how safe are the rest of us. This has to be stopped guys, for the sake of the people of the US, and for the sake of us all.

    I concur, I'd like programming to be a precise dicpline but it isn't, I am a proffessional software developer, I feel that calling our selves engineers only hurts us, it makes people (bosses) expect things which are impossible, the worst of these is they expect us to be able to garrentee that our software is bug free, as my degree was maths/comp sci and I did some post grad maths, I know that it can be proved that we cannot know that our software is bug free, (doesn't excuse ignoring know bad ones :-) ). Also I feel software development is more of a art than a science, like mathematics it has elements wich are art and those that are science and those that are neither.

    If I put "Senior Software Developer" on my resume instead of "Senior Software Engineer" what does that do to my chances of getting a job? Employers *expect* to see the word "Engineer" there so I keep putting it there.

    That's just because every one abuses the word engineer.

    I can see both sides of this, it all depends what your family is like mine are all pretty smart, so stuff doesn't go in one ear and out the other, also I not the only geek, so that means we can help eachother, plus share look out for the non geeks in the fam, (big big family -- roman catholic parents), but if my family abused me when they stuffed things up, blamed me for every problem, then I'd probably feel like some of these others. But as it is I lucky, my family repects my proffesional opinion, every one appreciates what other family member do for them. I'm just sad for folk who have such unreasonable families.

    I've got all that solved, little bro's a sys admin he does his own tech support + mums pc (she only word processes anyhow, one day the she might move to the net, not so far), the bro-inlaw J builds and mantains his own boxes (+ ones for others who pay him + his wifes twin), middle bro does his own thing (naughty prirate), so there's your soln convert sufficent members of you fam to geeks, it's called load sharing

    Rubbish, The truth is that in to many companies you have to be one of them to get into management, i.e. a suit a nobrain, a crook, or you have to give up coding/techie stuff either way no geeks in the management of that company, of course there are companies that are different, there just not as common

    In Australia our major power supplier here does that for all of their high-tension cables that go underground - they're encased in a layer of plastic, but the rest is oil. It not only is cheaper and lighter than other sheathing forms, but it insulates and dissapates heat at the same time

    Really, Where about in Oz are you? I'm in Sydney Bondi Junction, I wouldn't know if any power company here does that.

    When it comes to pot, all the scientific evidence shows that it is less harmful than alcohol;

    your research facts are way out of date, pot causes brain damage, paranoia ...., there is also some evidece that it causes /triggers schizophrenia in people who would not other wise have it.
