  1. Nah on Do Long Work Hours Affect Code Quality? · · Score: 1

    I have to disagree.
I do see that fatigue effects work performance, but the trade-off of the solution in the question above is even worse- that is, getting more resources (developers).

We all know that intimate familiarity with an application is vital to a speedy deployment. When you get too many hands working on the same area it gets muddled up.

Many coders I know (including myself) code for 6 good hours in a 10-12 hour work day. Like others, we do longer days as well and cannot attribute any code quality differences to the time spent.

The better ratio instead of quality/time is quality/coffee.

  2. It's just like the real world on Web Profits in the Gutter · · Score: 1

What do you think the rest of the *real* world is?

Pr0n? The pr0n industry is bigger than all of the major sports leagues combined in terms of overall revenues. Much larger in fact. Just on print and videos alone, not including the net. It has always been so. That doesn't even consider the highly lucrative pr0n *merchandising* aspect :-)

Spam? I don't know if anyone has checked their mailboxes in front of tehir homes yet, or watched a 1/2 hour of tv, or even walked outside! It's all spam!

Scams? Turn on your tv after 1am and you'll see every scam there is.

This Intraweb thingy is simply maturing to meet the demands of it's consumers- you and me. So give me pr0n, spam, and scams!

    (negate that last part)

  3. Can I just Hop On? on Starbucks Clashes With WiFi Hobbyists Over Airwaves · · Score: 0, Redundant

I live in NYC and go to a small cafe to do work on my laptop. The cafe is right next door to Starbucks. I'm assuming Starbucks charges for access (plus I loathe going in there), so could I just hope on their network from next door, or do I need to be on their specific configuration? If the answer to the above is "yes", then can I pay for access once, get teh config info, then hop on using that same info at a later time? Or do they just charge for when you are in the store itself? hmmm......

  4. I've seen them and they are actually cool. on Animated Ads in a Subway Near You · · Score: 1

I saw one for Target on the PATH from Hoboken to NYC. It was really cool, and I despise advertising. It should be cool to do other things with it as well. The subways in NYC are so miserable anyway, we need something to quite the thoughts of suicide.

  5. Glazed over facts on MIT vs. Las Vegas · · Score: 4, Interesting

The article states the current key issues in a passing sentence- that the chances of being able to do this are basically nil now. Not that they are watching, but that casinos use a 6 deck shoe that is shuffled 2/3 of the way through (before the real advantage begins). Having frequented Atlantic City, the process of counting cards in the privacy of home is one thing, doing it with bells, flashing lights, scantily clad cocktail waitresses, and the most important distraction, the other players, is quite another. The article was a fun read. Made me envious.
