Oh I agree that the formatting that rich text provides *is* usefull. The point I have is that before this can be used (without consequence) in email with the outside world, we have to find a solution for the "spam tracking through images" problem. I don't know about you, but I do everything I can to avoid getting on spam lists with my day-to-day email accounts. And doing that requires blocking thinks like HTML since it can provide tracking for spammers.

I see how everything you describe would indeed be useful, but I consider the damage caused by spammer misuse of those same features to be far too much of a hinderance at this point.

Because the web was designed for HTML. Email was not. Email is much less anonymous. You can't send spam to an IP address and expect it to follow the user *anywhere* they go, like you can with email. I'm sure you know all of this.

When I open an image on a web page, it doesn't track my email address, and accordingly, sign me up on the "active email" spam list.

I believe most clients don't implement this feature on *purpose*. HTML mail seems to only be used by advertising and spammers that want to track if you opened the message or not.

I use Outlook and have installed a NoHTML mod that automatically disables HTML from being rendered. Instead it just spits out straight text. It's wonderful.

Serious question since you work for Charter...

Are all their customers forced to have incredibly sub-par "tv guide" screens with their digital cable package? Ours shows a measly half hour in FULL SCREEN format and is 1/3 ads.

If you have ever seen a Time Warner guide, you'd understand why I'm complaining.

But seriously, is this something that can be fixed by exchanging the digital tuner with another brand or something like that? I honestly can't believe that Charter's only choice is this terrible terrible guide that shows only a half hour in the full screen guide.

I'm interested in what you know about Cingular. I just learned myself that they support both TDMA and GSM in the same phone. They have 2 models that do this, the Nokia 6340i and the Sony Ericsson egg-shaped phone.

So my question is this: If Cingular is currently using TDMA and transitioning to GSM, then why would they ALSO be adding WCDMA? I mean, isn't that 3 networks to support by the same company?

Here's a source of info on the transition from TDMA to GSM. There are other places where you will read the same thing, of course:
The driving force behind this standard is the fact that two major US carriers - AT&T Wireless and Cingular - are both transitioning their networks from TDMA to GSM technology. During the transition period, they will be operating both types of networks at the same time. Therefore, it will be beneficial to have phones that work seamlessly on both types of networks.

My parents have Charter digital cable and the channel guide--IMO the reason to get digital--is the worst implementation I've ever seen.

About HALF the screen is a constant ad, you can see about an hour of time, and a total of about 8 channels at once, whereas with TimeWarner, you can see about 4 hours at once in a big full-screen guide, and about 15 channels at once. Everytime I visit, I can't help but go off about what a poor quality channel guide they have compared to TimeWarner's digital offering. Why must half the screen be used for ads instead of a nice big channel guide? It's easier to either pick up the paper, read a TV Guide, or go to tvguide.com than it is to use the one they include!

I've written them about this and they're reply was something like: "There wasn't any more information displayed at once prior to having ads."

Don't they even TRY what the competitors are offering? I know cable is a localized monopoly, but geez. I would never pay for that after having used TimeWarner's system.
