  1. Alternatives please? on LWN.net Closing Down · · Score: 5, Interesting

This question obviously would not get posted to "Ask Slashdot", but I'm still curious.

What sites do you, the full-on geek slashdot community, think deserve my readership after next week's closing of lwn?

Loads of linux news sites are out there, from home-grown to corporate backed, but I've yet to find one that comes close to the professional and relevant lwn (not that I was looking hard - after all, I love lwn). Lay it on me!

Have you ever taken the time to read any of the other threads just like yours in every other anime article ever posted on Slashdot?

Actually, no. As I stated in the parent, I hate anime, so I never really read them. And yes, I can disable the anime topic in my settings. I mean to nearly every time I see an anime post, but I always seem to get caught up in something else.

But... have no fear. Someday I'll disable. I mean to as soon as I finish this post. Hopefully the phone doesn't ring or something.

Just because it doesn't matter to you doesn't mean it doesn't matter to anybody else.

Damn. It's not like I'm demanding anime be done with on slashdot. Please. I was asking a question. Why so hostile?

I've been reading slashdot for years and have never figured why anime keeps cropping up here. Does computer geek = anime geek or does the vocal minority here simply make it appear as such?

I ask this question as a computer geek. I hate anime and know very few other computer geeks that really like it. I've known a few anime geeks in my time and sure, they used computers, but they were far from reaching the geekdom truly deserved of the title "computer geek" (whatever that means).

Basically, I'm ranting. I can sort of see how anime is "News for Nerds", but it would be quite a stretch to consider it "Stuff that matters".

With this purchase, SecurityFocus' credibility (at least with me) has gone out the window. I can't see how they can continue to be credible when they've got a company in charge that ONLY cares about the bottom line. Just look at their irresponsible virus warnings (as you've so clearly demonstrated). Boooooo!

I say all this GUESSING that the support for Chinese in Redhat will be just as good, if not better, as the Japanese support.

Oh, BTW, Abiword does do internationalization. As does Mozilla, Sylpheed (this thing rocks!), gqview. The basics are covered, but you probably already knew that.

WAY FIRST! My sister-in-law, who lives about 10 minutes from me, can't get ADSL due to fiber in the middle. That's OK. She can get 2Mb Cable (again, about $30/month) or 100Mb FIBER ($90/month)! FIBER I SAY!

It is not the end of the world, but it's likely the end of US leading the way.

The U.S. hasn't led the way in broadband for a while - Japan has.

In my area alone (Tokorozawa, which is no megapolis), there exists a ridiculous amount of ADSL providers for me to choose from (ISPs - GOL, BigLobe, SoNet, OCN, YahooBB, etc. "loop" providers" - Eaccess, NTT, ACCA, DION, etc.). Of course, NTT owns the copper to my house, but they get their cut. NTT charges an "access fee" (about 180 yen a month) for the use of the "last mile" copper for something other than telephone service. In total, I pay a little under $40 a month for 8Mb ADSL (<=8Mb down, <=1Mb up).

Then there is cable TV access... oh yeah... and a huge initiative that's coming to my area soon... FTTH - Fiber To The Home. 100Mbs of broadband lovin (too bad about them bottlenecks).

Broadband internet access has become like telephone or cable TV service... it's just something you have. I don't know anyone here, none of my friends, none of my co-workers*, that doesn't have some form of broadband.

From what I read here and from talking with friends in the States, quality broadband is hard to find. It's definitely more expensive. It's sad that I live in arguably the most expensive country in the world, yet I pay less for my broadband than anyone I know in America (does 8Mb ADSL even exist there?).

    * Some of my friends live in Yokota AB. That place is NOT Japan. It's little America. The sole ISP there is fully taking advantage of it's monopoly. If you live on the base, you pay $35 a month for 56k dial-up that's limited to 90 hrs a month or you go without, which in today's world, isn't an option when you're thousands of miles away from home. Poor bastards!

Who said anything about talk radio? If you're asking if I have links and articles handy that refute your (lack of) proof... no I don't. I could get them, but I seriously doubt it would matter to you.

...or do you just want to call names?

No name calling here... or did you perceive something?

I don't deny the one fact you presented - forces in the governement ARE talking missle defense. Proof of failure is plentiful... so... let's just give up... let's not keep trying... that's the American way.

As for pulling out of treaties, you must be talking about Kyoto. Tired... tired of hearing about Kyoto. America didn't raitify it. Neither did most of the EU. Hell, Japan hasn't either and, IIRC, doesn't plan on it (and they hosted it). So what makes America different when it comes to Kyoto?

If your talking about the AMB Treaty, I'd not say that America pulled with a "fuck you, we do what... [we] ...want, we're the US" attitude. This hardly sound like "fuck you".

...talking nuclear proliferation in spite of all common sense...

Whose idea of common sense? Yours? A nuclear weapon is the most powerful and fear-bringing ever devised. To simply shelve this weapon forever is, IMO, dumb. Low-yeild, "clean" nuclear weapons are a possibilty. This report's only call for "more nukes, more nukes" is of the least destructive kind. This is my common sense talking... and I have no proof.

...using the recent terrorist attacks to promote ill will toward coutries that have nothing to do with them.

Proof! I gotta ask for proof on this one. Which countries has America promoted ill will toward in the name of the "terrorism"? You make it sound as if Bush is yelling "Yeeehaw.... I don't know why, but let's fuck up that counrty too!"
