  1. Re:go ahead and use idle percentages on Quick, Standard Measurement for CPU Power? · · Score: 2, Interesting
As mentioned above - for a general purpose OS - you have to take priority into account. I can keep a machine at 100% CPU utilization - and it will have 99+% available to anyone that comes along with a higher priority.

What are those priorities, Interupt handling, high priority applications, ???

What this person might be considering is some kind of batch job scheduling environment - where you want to schedule an incoming job on the system with the greatest current capacity to process it. ie. using free resources around the network to do useful work.

  2. Potential CPU available ??? on Quick, Standard Measurement for CPU Power? · · Score: 4, Informative
Well, first off - it is CPU available above a certain priority. I may be running a 100% cpu usage process at a very low priority - so there is no "left over" cpu to utilize, but an application can come in and get 100% of the CPU.

I am not even sure there is a way of measuring what you want. There are so many variables (Disk I/O, memory bandwidth, etc.) that you can't get a reasonable measurement of how much CPU is left over to do useful work for your process.

The other thing is that many things can take down a CPU as well - a huge burst of network traffic can take an "idle" CPU and peg it at 100% in kernal usage.

Your best bet would probably be to hook into the various schedulers and get deep knowledge of what is really going on - pain in the butt, but doable

I (and everyone else) knows that Microsoft has called it Longhorn for who know s how long... its unfair to last minute try to torpedo Microsoft.
Not quite - first off, I will place a bet today that Microsoft will never market an operating system named Longhorn. Much like they have never marketed operating systems called Chicago, Memphis, Cairo, etc. It will be called something like Windows 2007, Windows Advanced, ???.

Apples mistake is trying to take advantage of the "code name" and tie it to a marketted release. Tiger wouldn't have a leg to stand on if Apple simply released OS X 10.4 (or what ever the official name is) and let the trade press report the tiger name.

Apple really can't get their codename strategy in order - why is it that only apple seems to have these problems and not companies like AMD (The Athlon toilet partitions) - Intel (love the Cease and Desist orders on the Merced project) - Microsoft (pick your favorite city here)

While it is an interesting excersize - it is far from prime time. First you have the overhead of extra packet scheduling (and making sure that each RSVP'd stream stays within its reservation) - then there is the whole problem of what to do with packets that fall outside the reservation. Lets not even get into the policy questions on how a router decides if a reservation should be honored or not (much less who to charge for the bandwidth commitment)

The alternative is to get a canned hardware model (ie. Mindstorm) and then present interesting project in having the hardware manipulate the real world.
