  1. Re:There are no Republicrats on Linking Dangerously · · Score: 1

I bunch them together because they both share the same fatal flaw in their platfoms. Democrats are for personal/social freedom but against economic freedom. Republicans are for economic freedom (to a certain extent at least), but against personal/social freedom. Neither one of them is consistant in their philosophy, and as I said, they share the same inconsistancy, hence I group them together.

How does simply advocating violence violate anyone's right to anything? As far as I know, words can only kill if fed through a sufficiently powerful amplifier and very robust speakers. In order to violate someone's right to life, you have to ACT and kill them. If someone does this, punish them for committing an unlawful ACT, but you can't go after the person who put the thought in their head...unless you're one of those people who doesn't believe in personal responsibility.

    2. You say that it more clearly defines our rights. I contest that and say that it more narrowly defines them (esp re the 4th amendment), and if you keep narrowing the definitions, you eventually define our rights away to nothing.
The Republicrats have all got it wrong. One side wants economic freedom but legislated morality. The other wants us to be able to do as we please with our bodies and minds, but not with our wallets and checkbooks. I say let people do as they please, so long as they are not actually causing harm to someone else. Don't prosecute the guy who teaches how to make a bomb; he isn't hurting anybody. The criminals are the ones who actually blow up the bombs and cause injury. Keep following this precident, and we're going to end up with the thought police

I've wanted to build one of these things for a while (see my name), but I've never gotten around to it. I especially wanted to try to use liquid N2 to cool the solenoids and increase conductivity. Fun with massive amounts of electricity AND potentially disfiguring chemicals. Any thoughts (maybe from physics gurus out there?)

  5. Re:DNA not infallible on Military DNA Registry Used in Criminal Case · · Score: 1
You do need sequence data, but not a full sequence.

What you're talking about are called VNTR's (Variable Number Tandem Repeats). There are other types of polymorphisms like SNP's (Simple Nucleotide Polymorphisims) and RFLP's (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms). "Loci" (singular "locus") are simply locations in the genome. There may be 13 variable loci that are looked at (I'm not a forensic biologist, just a molecular/cellular biologist) but there are many, many identified loci in the human genome.

Most of the genome is very similar from person to person, but there are regions of variability. Identification by genotyping looks at a number of these regions, and the chances of any two people having exactly the same variations in all the variable regions is so small as to be negligable.

I have done stuff like this, both in humans (looking for presence/absence/heterozygosity of an Alu site), and in grasshoppers from the Ozarks in Missouri (looking at SNP's in order to determine levels of gene flow). Hope this was helpful

  6. Re:Only one problem. on The Free State Project · · Score: 1
A representative of the Free State Project came and spoke at my school (Washington University in St. Louis), and basically outlined what they are planning on doing. It would make no difference if the government were to withdraw highway funds, as the Free State Project plans to cut itself off from federal funding anyway. Roads could be paid for just like anything else, by the people who use them (take the NJ turnpike for example).

As an added point, Kansas, IIRC, did not comply with some federal mandate or other, and did lose federal highway funding, and, at least the last time I checked, had not suken into Road Warrior-like anarchy.

Check out Students for a Libertarian Society for a little more info on what could be considered "liberty-minded people".

I'm a DJ at KWUR Washington University, a low power station that has been simulcasting on the web for some time (often, the on-line stream is the only way to hear the station in the dorms). I somehow get the feeling that this is going to prevent us from continuing this service, which is a real shame, as KWUR's mission is to expose people to little known/underground bands. How much of this does everyone think is actualy driven by revinues lost to people recording webcasts, as opposed to an effort to kill the best distribution venues for unsigned acts and small labels?
