  1. Re:Why 4th Edition? on Ask the Designers of D&D Fourth Edition · · Score: 1

Quick and Dirty can be fun. Some of the best times I've had playing AD&D is when we would roll up "pop-corn" characters and just hit the dungeon. The rules where simple, 4d6 rolled in order keep what you had.

The most fun I had with a character was with a dwarf with a INT 9, WIS 7, and CHR 6, with a drinking problem. No thinking involved just ran straight in to combat swinging his axe. What made it fun was having to think like I'm a dumbass drunk dwarf.

One of the rememberable events was when the thief and the bard where arguing over who would check the chest and open it. All the players where taking sides and arguing over it, except me. The exchange between the DM and Myself went like this.

Me: My dwarf walks up the the chest.

DM: The dwarf is walking over to the chest.

All the players where ignoring me and the DM at this point.

    Me: I inspect the chest.

DM: The dwarf is kicking the chest and shaking it.

Me: (the players were still ignoring us) I prepare to open the chest.

DM: The dwarf is rasing his axe over the chest.

    At the same time.
player 1: What? (looking at the dm)
    Me: I open the chest.

    player: stop!
DM: to late! the dwarf slams his axe down on the chest shattering it into million pieces. setting off the trap... Let me see those saving throws please.

for the record we all survived but nothing int he chest did. it became common practice to hog tie the dwarf at that point.

I doubt there is any real to the conspericty theory about them keeping the cures for diabities in some hole some where, or cancer. But there is enough curcumstatual evidence out there to make you wonder.

Actually he is not far off base but most of the time it's not the feds, it's the local 5'o that overreacts. There was a case where a local family took some pictures of dad playing with his 3 and 5 year old daughters. He was tickling them doing that blowing on the belly thing.

The pictures where processed and since the pictures contained nude children the local police were called. That afternoon the children were taken by child custody and the parents were arrested for child molestation and production of child pornography.

After a few months the case was dismissed because the judge saw it for exactly what it was. It took another year for the parents to get their children back. Bullshit about being accused of child molestation, being proven innocent of the said charges had no bearing on the case. It took a court order and threatened jail time from the same judge to get that done.

So it's not always the feds. Sometimes it's just some local prosecutor with a bug up his ass to ruin a family. Ask the Duke lacrosse players if you don't believe me.

So you mean they are going to fuck the game up even more? How about this, you scrap 3.0/5 and go back to 1st edtion? Then you work from there.

My friends and I had been playing AD&D for over 20 years. We started with chainmail. Went through basic, not the red and blue books, 1st editon and into 2nd. Frist edition was a mess. Inconsistan rules, typos, and shitty book construction but we had a fucking ball with it. 2nd edition was better, less rule problems and some needed rule changes.

3rd edition is crap. Most of the soul of the game is gone. The books look nice but it's not D&D. It's a bad imitation with D&D on the cover. Come on, magic using dwarves, evil rangers, and wizards carrying swords. That goes against the very core of the game.

Like good little players we bought 3rd edition and tried to play it. We ruled that it sucked so much and went back to 2nd edition. 3rd edition might have been a good game if it stood on its own but its not D&D.

I don't play anymore because of that crap and I know a lot of old time players who have stopped playing too. Wizards should go back to the roots of D&D. 3rd edition isn't D&D and neither will 4th.

Don't pity me, pity yourself. You people just don't understand what the fuck is going on. We can't save africa. The africans have to do that themselves but they are not willing. You know why they are not willing? Because everytime there is a problem the West rushs in with food and supplies.

Do you know that in some african cultures there is no concept of the future? There are no words in their language for tomorrow. They live for the now. You give them well and tubing for irrigation. Let them grow food for one season, enough to feed them all. Come back a year later you will find they have sold off the pump and irrigation equipment. Why? Because they didn't need it anymore. You ask them why they didn't think to use it this season, by the way they are starving because they didn't save any food or seeds, and they will look at you like you are stupid.

Feed these people so they can breed and then there are more mouths to feed. So the game continues. We've been trying to change the conditions over there for 60 years and they just keep getting worse. Compare the africa today to the africa of the 1960s? When where the africans better off?

When is enough, enough? When they have breded beyond our ability feed them and ourselves? People like you are part of the problem. We have created a whole continent that is dependent on the good will of others. If that cycle doesn't stop.

    Oh fuck it.

There maybe a few of them that are like that but for the most part everything south of the Sahara is a lost cause. The only thing that people seem to value is the gold and the diamonds there. Since I don't hold ether of those of any special value I see nothing in africa worth saving.

Then there is the animals, which I feel really bad for. Yes, for the most part I value the animal life in africa more than I do the people.

How is this for a plan? We wall the whole fucking place up for a 100 years. Nothing comes in or out. Then we let nature take its course. In a hundred years when they have killed each other, starved, or died off because of aids or some other preventable illness, we reintroduce the animals. Then we declare the whole god damn continent an animal preserve.

You must give these people a laptop hand out, teach them how to build thier own laptops. Teach them that after you teach them not to shit in their own water supply. That AIDS isn't spread by evil spirits and raping a little girl doesn't get rid of that evil spirit. Teach them to relay on themselves instead of everyone else.

There are people in africa, ones with brains, that are saying just that.

Of course also for just walling up the whole god damn place and letting them ether work thier own problems out. That or letting them starve and kill each other. But, fuck, what do I know?
