  2. Re:Confusion. on VMware's Ultimate Virtual Appliance Challenge · · Score: 1

Simple. Once created, a virtual appliance can be shared with anyone merely by copying a file. Since we all have the same "hardware" (VMWare virtualization layer) a collection of pre-built appliances could drive adoption of virtualization...

I accept that all this is true. First I've heard of it.

I don't think its against the law, but anything non-factual you answer may be opening yourself to liability if the employee decides to sue. So, "eligible for rehire" is a fact, whereas "did he suck" is not, and answering may get you in hot water.

Manually run ntpdate? Heard of cron? Or better yet, configure ntpd correctly.

I haven't modified my MythTV since its second install (when I upgraded to FC4) and although the initial setup can be a pain, once it's setup, you should be done other than the quarterly? poll you have to do to get zap2it for free. From that point, you should only need to touch it to upgrade if something you want comes out.

    Maybe you should try Knoppmyth?

  8. Re:Why write documentation at all? on Shorewall Developer Tom Eastep Quits · · Score: 2, Informative

Let me clarify one thing. Tom didn't seem to mind writing the documentation, he just was befuddled as to why people couldn't find the answers they were looking for in the docs.

To say that Shorewall is the best documented OSS I've ever seen is no understatement.

Shorewall will carry on. A team is being put together to make sure that happens.

  10. What is the impact of piracy? on Why Do Games and Game Studios Fail? · · Score: 1

Did you ever pay 50 bucks for a game, only to find it in the closeout bin next to Mohogany Rush a few months later? Of all the comments I've read, including the industry insider, none mentioned piracy. What is the impact of those who play for free?

  11. Re:isn't noise irrelevant? on Hard Drives Evaluated for Noise, Heat and Performance · · Score: 1

I recall working late in a room with three line printers, only to find myself suddenly awakened by the silence as the last one quit. I also recall a washing machine sized 288MB Wang hard drive that used to vibrate so badly that it would "walk" across the floor. Great fun!

  12. Solution to chess on Distributed Chess Computing Project · · Score: 1

Tablebases are the closest thing to a solution. These are pre-solved endgame positions. The "three man" tablebases cover games like king v king/rook. All the tablebases up to five man are about 7GB, and to add the six man is over (not sure by how much) 60GB.
