Windows is not a shell. And also, the shell in Windows is pulling some stuff out of bash. In Windows XP, the shell has tab compleiton. Bash is better than the windows shell still. And I almost always see bash. So we do have a standardized shell. We can have a cowboy_neal based logo through framebuffer. I don't understand what you mean by "faster performance(its starting to get fragmented)". I use gentoo and it runns very quickly with a preemptive kernel and low latency. There are many different file systems avalile with different speeds. I think we are getting plenty of new functality(DRI, Framebuffer to list a few new things).
Well actually I'd say linux has more protection. You would have to be root. No one eith common sense would use root longer than they have too. DOS has no such protection, nor does win 95/98/Me. NT would probably protect against it, but Om not even sure if deltreeis in NT DOS.
These distros aren't designed for Joe Schmoe. They are for people that want specilized distros. They are niches in niches. But other then that, if there are not major chages, I think it should be contibuted to the source. If it's something entirely different, then it should be its own distro. But no matter what, these distros won't make linux more popular becuase they are designed for linux users.
Source-based distros let you do more then optimize for ur proc. With a source-based distro, you can put on other flags, such as things to omit the frame pointer, which prevents debugging on most procs, but lets you have faster code. There are a lot more choices you can make in a source-based distro then your processor. Or at least in gentoo.
Gentoo will run on SPARCs. I'm guessing Lunar should becuase it's source based, and as a reslut, as long as gcc is avalible for the platform, it should work. I can only guarntee that gentoo will.
Actually I think more distros dont require an ISO then those that do. Gentoo doesn't, nor does Debian. Gentoo always need a nice net connection becuase u download everything in the package managemnt system. Also last I checked Redhat was installable by booting and downloading the rest. Gentoo and debian are really are really the best for this becase in the install you only set up the system and nothing else. I'd presume Socceror and Lunar are like that, but have no experience with either.
If you want an OS god, look at Microsoft. All software for Windows is very standardized. Fine, blame developers for not using Windows Installer. But InstallShield is also from Microsoft. Redhat has garbage package managment also. Gentoo has the best package managemnt I've seen so far. And it's based on the BSD ports tree. All of the different versisions allow people to make products, and allow others to imporve upon theose products. That's waht open source software is all about. But let's dump all that and have an open source monoply. Right on.
I entirely agree with you. I have no objection to people who know nothing about computers running Lycrosis on Mandrake or some other distro. But gentoo is an advanced distro. Why should evreything be easy and automated? It's not hard to install gentoo, it just takes a while, as would any source distro. In addition to raising the bar a bit on the install, it allows you to fix your problems more easily, because you know what's going on. And if you konw what's going on and you want an automated install, you can make a shell script to do that really quickly. The gentoo system has one final advantage. Once you have everything setup, you can make yourself a tarball of it(and this can include all the software you want), and extract that next time you want to do an installaton.
Linux doen't have to copy MacOS. Now if KDE is almost exactly like Windows, thats another thing. But Linux didn't copy Windows, luckily. It's a *nix, like unix, not windows.
Well if hardware manufacturers actually made drivers for other oses this wouldnt mean anything. Teah I agree Windows has a lot of supposurt for different hardware, but Microsoft didn't make all of this. Every hardware manufacturer makes windows drivers. Only a few supopurt Linux. So most Linux drivers are made by other ppl. So if Microsoft died, it wouldnt be this way. And it's not something that Microsoft did, but yeah, it is an advantage of Windows.
well i think microsoft already has contracts with them, so its not like redhat is the only one. and what difference does it make? every1 has x86s, and every1 makes operating systems for them. microsoft makes operating systems for less platfoms then linux anyway. if they wanted to control all procssors, they'd mkae windows for ppc. bottom line is ( it doesnt make a difference who intel makes contracts with. ultimately, ill be abel to walk to the computer store and buy a 64bit processor, and so will any and all developers. linux owuld get there, and there is no way microsoft could have stopped that. now they might care about hp teaming up with redhat, but for processors, there is no way they can control what platforms will run on it.
ppl said the same thing before 32 bit processors ame ut, and when intel made 1ghz processors. software will find uses from the extra power, eventually.

I'm just wondering if I was the only person who first thought the article had something to do with Multiusr Dungeons(online games).

Well, gentoo does, and its not a large company. Gentoo has several servers all running gentoo. Why shouldn't Lunar?

Google already does translation.
Because people have rretty much made Klingon a complete language(40k+ words i think). So why not have it?

Well, you can but not easily. Microsoft claimed you can't, and demonstrated it, but that compuiter had been set up to crash when IE was removed.

Compared to their software, anything and everything is perfect.
The logitech 1 inst the same price. It's far cheaper.Same goes for all the Microsoft vs. Logitech input devices.
voice activated dialing would do the trick.

give them time and their prices will come down. it's like any new technology. in a few years no1 will not have 1.

umm, people did that
pirates would have had a virus free copy before vs.net was released here. this wouldnt affect them at all
