I wonder if some day people are going to get so fed up with this shit that they just do whatever the fuck they want because their contempt for the law has grown magnitudes beyond their respect for it. I'd be all for supporting a person/orginazation that would effectively show a strong dissonance (like, blatantly disobeying a software patent and disregarding the court orders). In fact, that would be an interesting underground orginization to form, just a bunch of smart software developers pumping out code that completely breaches patents left and right...

There's nothing confusing about it. Take it at face value and don't read into it. If you can show me where I specifically state I "like" Microsoft, please quote it so I can see the error I made. Other than that, please don't read into anything I say further than the dictionary's value of the word.

Then what is the reason? I think you got things mixed up and your condescending last paragraph is un-founded. Businesses make money, and if they do not then they go away. Yes, other goals may be part of a business, maybe the owner likes plying his trade, but the whole point of "going into business" is to trade a commodity or service for either another commodity or service or that other thing that can be used to trade for commodities and services: MONEY. I assert that if your "business" does not exist to turn a profit, but rather to benefit humanity, then it isn't a "business" at all, but rather a charitable organization. Perhaps that is simply a play on words, but it is a non-trivial distinction.

True, society as we know it would grind to a halt if business wasn't around, but let's not get the order of things mixed up here. Society came first, then society begat business.

Lastly, impliying that I encourage a business to force others out is incorrect. I just said that it's legal if done legally. If you read some of my other posts in this thread, you will see that I despise conclusions being drawn from implications based on my posts. I don't feel like getting into it again. Now, that said, It's quite obvious (at least to me) that a non-competitive atmosphere is no good for capitalistic business in general.

So, please, if you respond to any more of my posts, do not infer things I did not say from my posts. Thank you and good night.

Holy mother of god... I just got through explaining, in the post you replied to, that if I say something SIMPLE, like "a business exists to make money" it doesn't mean ANYTHING ELSE. It doesn't mean that it's my endorsement of the way things are, it doesn't mean if I had my way, that's what I would set up. It simply means WHAT I WROTE.

It's kinda retarded that I have to even go this far in saying this. I fucking hate Microsoft. It's almost comical that I have to defend what was said as a matter of fact, rather than an approval, becuase of how much I hate Microsoft's shady practices.

Slashdot: Please stop being dumb, thank you.

Incorrect assumption. When someone starts a business, they don't say, "oh, I want to lose money, but help people." Well, not unless it's part of a bigger picture in order to get tax breaks... Regardless, a business makes money. If it doesn't, it will no longer exist. That's all you should conclude from my statement, no more no less.

Just beacause I state something simply, doesn't mean there isn't more to the picture. A lot of slashdotters seem to fail to come to this conclusion, and it's pretty damn annoying.

The goal of any business is to profit. Not to make the competition fail through shady practices. If the competition fails because you made such a good product, that's one story. If they fail because you illegally cornered the market using underhanded licensing tactics, that's another all together.

That's kind of a silly statement. Perhaps I'll see YHBT. HAND. etc. after I post this, but evolution is a pretty undeniable process. We've forced bacteria evolution, just take a look at what happens when a stronger breed of strep survives antibiotic treatments. Or when we (humans) polluted the shit out of a birch forest in mid-1800's England, I believe it was there at least, the population of white moths plummeted, while black moths rose. What the hell do you call that? Magic? No, that's another forced evolution. If animal X is continuously eaten by predator Y, then only the best suited of animal X will get to breed, passing on only the best suited genes. Evilution my ass, evolution is what nature tends towards.

... I feel I have some insight that may aid you.

My dad is currently a programmer for a large insurance firm. Prior to that he worked for National Gas Pipeline, and before I was born, he worked various other places (Bell Labs, in particular). He's not too aggressive about his job, and I'd even go so far as to say he's very passive. He doesn't go for the promotions, nor does he try to work his way up the chain. That's fine, because he likes what he does, but it also makes him a target for dickheads. Like making him work long hours. In fact, I bet he's doing more work right now, on his home machine. He worked long hours, and while most of the time he managed to be home for dinner, he wasn't really "there" for much of anything. In fact, the only things I can remember us doing were going to 2 major league baseball games, and playing catch. All the rest of the time, he was at work late for some new deadline, orreading more bullshit printouts from the IBM S/370.

Something you may not have thought of, I have a nice little anecdote for:
Now, this may be an atypical situation, but in his last job, during a massive round of layoffs, they gave him the choice of quitting, or moving to Houston. If he chose to stay, they would deny him his severance pay. He chose to stay. Well, unfortunately, that severance check was not a small one, and it REALLY damaged our ability to do simple things like replace the boiler, or fix the falling front wall. And now, at his current job, he's looking at being outsourced. It affects him as a person, and therefore affects the whole family. I realize that layoffs and underhanded corporate tactics are a part of any job, but as I mentioned before, he's so passive that he just sits there and takes it. Now, you have to decide on your own whether you are aggressive enough to not put up with shit like that and have your own life outside of work. His passive nature also keeps him from going for opportunities. Just last week, I managed to eventually talk him into applying for the city of Chicago as a Systems Engineer. He has over 20 years of experience, and a Masters degree. He would be a good candidate, plus being a steady government job and a nice pay raise it seemed good. Well, the amount of time it took me to convince him was one day too long and he missed his window. Don't be like that, because it'll get you roped into working long hours with no compensation and no family time.

Sort of. A hub will not "slow down" to the slowest link, but it does not have enough "intellicence" to dole out the packets to the proper computers. You can build a passive hub by splicing network cables together. Most hubs are just repeaters and cross-overs. This means you collide through the roof, and as such, the more load the slower everyone goes. So if you have a 4-way hub with a 10, 10, 100 and another 100 on it, the two 100's alone can talk at 100, but as soon as one of those 10's start talking, the 100's will take a performance hit.
