"Symptoms of the rot include picture break-up and freezing at a specific place on the disk. The main cause is believed to be poorly designed cases. Delamination shows up as a coffee-like stain that prevents the disc from playing."

you know, picture break-up could be caused by scratches and puup on the dvd, and the freezing in a specific place could be attributed to the delay in switching layers during playback.

i've seen funky "stains" on CDs and DVDs, but haven't had problems with playback. i'm not saying that dvd rot doesn't happen, just that there are other reasons for playback problems.

    1) it's kasparov's way of saying "j0, i gon fux0r with your brain junior!1!!1!! FEAR TEH PAWN! TAKE IT! TAKE IT! (muahaha, as akbar would say, "IT'S A TRAP!!!") so would ineptly waste an opening move to grab a pawn, even when it's already behind by one.

    2) garry pushes the pawn forward, thinking, "KEKEKEKE I PUT TEH PAWN PRESSURE ON TEH KNIGHT! j00 HAVE NO ESCAPE MAKE YOUR TIME!1!!" thus making the knight feel uncomfortable enough for black to either a) move it, or b) fortify it.

    3) kasparov decides that pushing the pawn is one of his "three best moves," and sees it adding just the right amount of pressure to capitalize upon later, but not so much as to require immediate attention from black.

i dunno. those are my guesses. any chess nuts have better insight?

rather than wasting your time deciding who sux0rz, why not spend your time deciding who's worth listening to? there's a reason why moderators are supposed to promote, rather than demote: the signal to noise ratio here is really, really underwhelming, and to use your points to mod trolls and nitwits down is pretty futile. better to mod UP, and crank your filter to 5.

AMD also said it would use UMC for excess factory capacity if necessary."

looking at the big picture, it seems that AMD has made a pretty decent business move upwards, scaling up as they need, and acquiring a nice, big name to throw around as good PR.

  20. PRESS RELEASE! HOLY COW! hi-tech! on Inside One Of the Last Vinyl Record Manufacturers · · Score: 4, Funny

NASHVILLE, TN (Reuters) - With the expansion of the vinyl industry, executives are looking towards technology to further their cause.

It has been a long time since music aficionados flocked to the record stores for vinyl records. With the advent of digital media such as CDs, CD-Rs, and the internet, it is possible to get the music you want quickly and easily, without having to leave your home. Furthermore, fans can make their own mixed compilations of their favorite music.

The vinyl industry here in Nashville is trying to capture that magic. Engineers are hard at work on the LP-R, and the LP-R drive. LP-R stands for Long Play Recorder, and is a throwback to the lingo vinyl enthusiasts used.

"We were gonna try for 7"-R, but saying 'seven-inch-arrr' just wasn't catchy enough," Buckaroo Banzai said. "Instead, we're going for the behemoth of vinyl, the LP!"

Here at the test labs of the Hong Kong Cavaliers, the press was introduced to the world's first LP-R drive. Fitting in the 5.25" bay of a personal computer, and expanding to a full-sized drive at the touch of a button, the LP-R drive can take blank LP-R media and burn LPs on the fly!

"We've only got it recording at 2x speed right now, but pretty soon we're gonna introduce the same technology we used to make splat-proof watermelons, and up the burn rates to 52x," one engineer stated.

The industry is buzzing with talk of LP-RW drives, and even a portable unit codenamed "the iLPod." Fan reaction has been phenomenal, with one fan exlaiming: "Holy CRAP! i've been waiting for this for YEARS! vinyl sounds so warm and smooth, and i can't WAIT to burn all my mp3s onto LP-Rs! Hell, even 32kbps mp3s sound MAGICAL!"

Another fan bared her breasts in support of the Hong Kong Cavaliers.

this is an example of where AMD could strengthen its product line. there's a great comment by Martigan80 where he raises the point that not every problem is best solved by throwing an Athlon or Pentium chip at it. perhaps AMD will be making more specialized processors that handle things faster, smaller, and more importantly, cheaper?

  24. interesante. muy interesante. on AMD Announces A Shift In Focus From PC Processors · · Score: 3, Insightful

contrary to what a lot of the above posts say, there _is_ a hint that AMD will be withdrawing (to what degree, who knows) from the processor market. but i think the most interesting part of the article is where it mentions that AMD will be raising $300 million in convertible notes.

what does that mean? it means they're not really retreating. i think it means that they're going to be broadening their efforts; they'll stop focusing so much on processors for PCs, and dedicate some resources to other places.

they did very well with their flash memory division for a while (nevermind how it's doing now). that shows that they are able to succeed in areas other than the PC processor market. this gave them a taste for pursuing interests besides processors. additionally, their bitter struggle to compete with intel, and it _is_ bitter and brutal, led them to realize that in order to truly succeed as a company, they're going to have to work on multiple fronts instead of tying their success on one admittedly difficult marketplace war.

in short: nevermind the hype about AMD retreating. focus on the interesting aspects of the article. focus on the fact that they're taking a risk in raising $300 million and lowering their credit rating. then think about _why_ they're doing it.
