The one thing that I learned and it was totally by accident is that security is the one thing that having a history on makes you more valuable to the company. The company also gets very nervous to the point of paranoid about moving the work, the testing and the architecture to another country. Even though I personally think that there is little chance of anyone embedding something in the product that would leave a back door (given the reviews we go though), the company does not think the same way. And from a history standpoint having all that old school shit in my head and pulling it out like "ya, this is a variation of the XYZ attack that was run years ago, we should be able to apply the same logic to prevent this, or at least it will be a starting point to prevent it" . Many times this my exec management has said " this is exactly why we pay you". But all that being said, if you do not stay current you will be unemployed, but with security once you spend years learning the basics of the subject staying current is still work but manageable.
Wow, and the haters who love to bash MS begin. Ya, exchange, the mature product that does calendering and mail and all your contacts truely sucks. It is much worst then google (oh wait, they don't have a global directory, and email outage, blah blah blah), or Apple.mac (really? that works now?) or mac servers with IMAP.
Google, is not enterprise ready, and is not secure, and will own your data in the cloud. I would perfer my local.gov NOT to use it if my name is going to be on any of their docs.
Come on, this is somehow news because Doctorow says it? You have not noticed that when you get an email in google that all of a sudden the ads that are around the edges have something to do with what is in the email you are reading? If you put it in the cloud, those who own the cloud, own you and your data, NOT new news. And because of that, it will never happen in my world, I will pay someone to host my server, but I am not letting someone host my DATA.
Ah yes, everyone on slashdot is smarter and uses the best OS in the world (whatever TF that is this week).
Blah blah blah, the ads made them use it? Please.....
It is fine at home with 2 computers, put 20 on and it blows.
Speed is half duplex as stated.
Security.
Not the same speed as wired, if you are on 10meg maybe - try 1gig with jumbo frames and see the difference.
Wired is NOT shared, like wireless, big ass hub.
Give me a wire and all the speed I can get.
After the problems I had 10 years ago with their products, I will never own anything they make again. This thread just reminds me that things have not improved and I will continue to NOT PURCHASE anything they make, including their mp3 players because of this. Even though I think the iPods are overpriced, if nothing else the iTunes software is better to manage songs then anything creative makes (I have seen the software and was not impressed).
You have to be this tall to ride this ride..... If you can not understand how to print, check your email, open a file, or log into your computer, then you do not deserve to have a job in a high tech company. All of the above has happened to me over and over, and I just ignore those people now, if you do help them, you are their personal tech support for ever more.
nope, no bullshit, really.... santa clara moved in on july 1, 2002. They paid to move me and my wife. My kid goes to school out here so it was a no brainer. Don't have to believe it, but, there are worse places to try and find work right now.
Dude, not only did the company move me here, but my wife found a job a month ago. I don't think that we are special, I think we have SKILLS and EXPERANCE in our field. We are not people that were making 100k a year with a liberal arts degree at a start up or dot bomb. I am an engineer with 10 years experience, and my wife has 15 years in IT. It is possible, I am not buying it from everyone. Besides, I am supposed to pay unemployment for people with options? I don't think so....
Interesting, had a company move me to san jose 6 months ago, live in santa clara now. So, there is still work out there if you look. And from where I moved from, 8k is nothing..... good luck.
You are right, it is not a priority, and the politics at a university will not allow any security, and really not the tight secutity they are talking about.
They do have a lack of knowlage, but I don't blame the engineers, it has never been a task they are required to do.
Every university I have ever been to had the worse security of any network I had ever seen. They are going to Build it? From What? Off the shelf gear? Wow, no one else could do that....

LOL, I am in category 1, and I am not doing it for 58k a year and passing a drug test :)

It is called IPv6, whenever that happens, just like QoS someday the ISP's will have that also, someday......
did you mean g.711? g.729 is toll quality.
missed this one, I am an networking engineer, and they are paying me about 120k.
Lead to mistrust? Man, I have never trusted them.

shit happens, happened to me, and 10 years later I don't even remember how bad it was. If you have skills, you will be able to get a job.
