There is no administration required. We take you through the initial set up and your box fetches updates automatically. Everything else is done through a web-interface, and your initial contract includes a full year of complete support for the appliance, so we can walk you through any task. If you open up SSH access to our private IP range, we can also log in and help you out with anything you're trying to do with it. The upcoming version has a lightweight graphical desktop used for deployment (setting up the IP address, doing upgrades, etc...), so you don't even have to touch a terminal if you don't feel like it.

But what most people fail to realize also is that microsoft doesn't purchase their components at retail price either. There's no Bill Gates going to CompUSA and ordering 10 million DVD drives, 10 million PPC CPUs, 5 million HDDs, etc... They have agreements and deals directly with the manufacturers of all the components and they pay a fraction of the price for each component than we would at retail price.

They probably are losing some money between the middle-man cuts and the packaging, etc... but it's very likely acceptable loss if they play their cards right.

And I also would be interested to see sale figures for the Xbox if/when modchips do come out for it. I'd like to know if that effect is really so detrimental to microsoft or if it boosts sales for a little while.

I have only occasional interest for playing games but the original xbox with a modchip makes for a very decent and cheap media center...

By "supported", the parent basically mean that he can ask his package manager to perform a system update (keeping a system up to date is important for servers as it increases security of the system by automatically installing newer releases of software with specific vulnerabilities addressed, and important for a workstation as it almost always increases usability of your desktop), and these apps will be upgraded automatically.

I do not know of a windows update manager that is able to perform updates on third-party software, therefore these apps are not supported. You need to remember what apps you have installed on your system (easy) and periodically check the website of these projects to make sure you have the latest version. If that's not the case, you need to go to the app's download site and install the upgrade. Otherwise, proceed to the next application.

If you're lucky, you'll see an announcement somewhere (/. for example) about *some* new releases for major applications.

Keep in mind that the reason this would not really work out for Microsoft is that a very large part of software out there available for windows is commercial and upgrading your system once a month for example, would probably entail spending a few hundred dollars at each upgrade since you need to pay for upgrades for most of these tools. And Microsoft cannot maintain a repository of open-source software for windows-update to maintain because they would be admiting that it is simply more convenient to maintain a system based on open-source software.

    I hope this helps.

The built-in admin web-interface to set up cups is really just there so that an admin with no desktop can configure their print server.

If you are an end-user, it is implied that you should be using desktop tools to accomplish this.

Both Gnome and KDE offer very nifty printer configuration apps that will take care of setting up CUPS for you. Gnome uses gnome-cups-manager (run that from your terminal or create a launcher), while KDE uses kprinter (you can also run it from the terminal and create a shortcut).

It is also worth mentioning that when you hit print on Mozilla Firefox, you can hit "Properties" for the printer in the print dialog and change the "Print Command" line to KPrinter to let it handle the printing in a much less convoluted way.

While designing an algorithm, the size of n doesn't matter, only the complexity of your relationship which allows you to understand the relationship between the system performance and the evolution of n. e.g: O(n) is linear. Your algorithm will perform in a way that is directly proportional to your input. O(n^n) is exponential, which means you need to try to find a more efficient algorithm to do the job.

To really understand what the other people in this thread are talking about, I recommend you get yourself a copy of the book "Mastering Algorithms with C" and take a university CS 101 class. Usually these classes cover the topic of algorithm complexity and evolution quite well.

Although I'm sure you can also find some decent tutorials online.
