    - Do you have a DVD player on all of your boxen?

    - Do you have enough bandwidth?

I have broadband, most of my boxen even don't have a floppy and doing a network install over NFS is just far too easy. If I need a DVD version, I'll burn one on a DVD-R and carry it around with a couple of fds.

It's not a matter of being cheap or not, it is a matter of convenience. I have a file server, tftp server so network boot is easier than plugging a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM.

MS SQL Server's "corporate" competitor is Oracle 9i. Oracle will beat a SQL Server hands down in any scenario unless it is a small database system, if that's the case there's no point using SQL Server, you can use MSDE or any freeware product. Postgres (last time when I had a look at it under Windows) runs on top of Cygwin and horrendously slow unlike its Unix-compatible brother. MySQL can be used but what's the point if you have already decided to use a toy database, you shouldn't use SQL Server, go and use MSDE instead, or Access. Most used MySQL is 3.x family and it used to not support lots of features (all changed in 4.x but are we being adventorous today?).

Unfortunately, as far as I can see (and my idea will be readily disputed by others) no OSS database is ready for "enterprise" systems (whatever that means, I work in a company who writes software and the backend can be any RDMBS as long as they have a decend JDBC driver). SQL Server 2k has lots of missing features which makes our life very hard and I'm not a fan but at the moment I can't go to any of our customers and say use postgres or mySQL etc.

Another big player is DB2 by IBM which claims it has the fastest database on the world but DB2 is cumbersome, hard to manage compared to Oracle and MS SQL2k but it works almost under any platform under the sun.

Database world is quite interesting, I can't say any RDMS system out there is perfect.

I did two courses on nuclear energy when I was in the university. You just can't believe how hard to get a negative coefficient reactor to start and stay working and how easy to overblow a positive coefficient reactor to get out of control. It's just simple physics. In one type you have a dynamically unstable (tends to shut down) system, the other is dynamically stable (tends to work by itself). Most of the PWR and BWRs are negative coefficient designs. Most of the graphite-cooled systems are positive coefficient designs. Strangely enough. United Kingdom has till a couple of these monsters. They tend to be very tricky.

Nuclear reactors are pretty safe if you know what you are doing. Almost all of the USA subs and all aircraft carriers have nuclear reactors and they are safely travelling all around the place for more than 50 years now. There has been a couple of accidents but even without nuclear reactors submarines tend to be pretty tricky things to run.

Nuclear energy is not as unsafe as GreenPeace claims.

If anyone insisted of the safety of planes and cars as much as they insisted on nuclear safety, all of us would be walking everywhere today. :(

The challenge that any attempt to realize Appleseed as anime faces is that the manga has a *lot* going on. Global politics, layers of social and racial turmoil, the affects of high technology on society (and vice versa), etc. With such a rich world and story line, creating a compelling version of that story in even one or two movie length features is very difficult.

Well, definitely true. That's why I really like TV series like GiTS SAC (and SAC op.2), GiTS the movie was pretty short and understanding what's going on was almost impossible unless you knew the story already. To be fair, I found the story in SAC much more gripping, detailed and fascinating. . SAC 2 is going good, so far I watched the first two and they were as interesting as the first series.

There are so many bad anime out there, I can understand who never liked the genre. It is a pretty hard thing to pick the good ones out of the rubbish if you don't know anything about the genre.

Last tip, if you liked GiTS SAC, you might like Paranoid Agent. It is good.
