Thier definatly has to be improvment over what is being used now. Considering that most votes that are invalidated or wrong are because of user error, such as too many votes, wrong marking or something the workers do by accident. Some of theses errors were solved by the old ballot machines, the ones with the level you had to pull, but thoses were expensive, had a habit of breaking.
electronic ballot from any of the 9 major vendors do an excellent job of already prevent errors, when instructions are followed, such as clearing the device before voting begins.
The biggest problem I have is the claim that putting paper role in there will solve any problem, when most of the times it is just an added cost and just makes people feel better. Anyone who could break into the machines and program to modify votes would also change anything that was printed out to look correct but record the wrong vote incorrect. I also have a problem with the claim that machines should be built like ATM machines. ATM are left unattended and need additional capabilities and protect, ballot machines are suppose to be under constant supervision,a constant 2 person in most places, when in use or containing votes(something that is not followed many times).
For using a paper end product there are usally 3 different methods for there use.
1) As the vote is made it is printed out to a paper roll, which people have not access too. The papers purpose is to act as a back up in the event the machine breaks and looses votes. I agree with this, it provides a backup which is good.
2) As a paper reciept(aka ATM) which the user walks away with. This is worthless and just an added expense since the paper recipts have no accountablility once they leave the place, and most would just be litter once the trash cans are all filled. For some reason some people think that they would beable to recall these if there was a need of a recount, but good luck collecting any significant number of the reciepts once they leave the building. Also if anyone is doing something wrong the with votes, while theses papers are correct what was recorded could be wrong.
3) Using the computers to create a perfectly printed ballot with results, the ballots are then dropped in a box for future counting, probably also a machine. Some people say that the first machine should also count votes, but in this case which count is the correct one; you are going to get people who don't deposit the ballot in the box for count, generally because the person just pockets it and walks away, or because in the process of the workers doing the counting process it gets missed.
My experience with people changing paper on machines comes from working in a bakery and with cash machines and as a rule we did not allow most employees to change the paper. They had a habit of not following the illistrated instruction right next to the place you changed the paper, and at different times messed up ink cartriges and even the printing head.
Granted most of the times poll locations are supported by elderly people who have an education as opposed not in my situation where the average person just barly made it out of high school if that.
The reason for the chad comparison was because they were given procedures to go around once an hour or more often if needed and pull out this drawn and dump the "used chads" in a trash can. The poll workers just did not. Some places did go with the paperless design of electronic ballot machines because there was no need for workers to get anywhere near them.
Debeers does semi-operate in the US, look at the diamond ads on TV, radio, etc(the "A diamond is forever" ads) and they are from debeers.
What they cannot do is sell directly in the US so buyers fly out of the US and get the product or use an intermediary. Also thier executives cannot enter the US.
They legal problem they have is because of charges of fixing the prices of industrial grade diamonds after WW2. During the 90s they were tring to come to an agreement to pay fines, etc so that they could again set up a presence in the country. Not sure what the current status of that is.
Wow I missed the news. When did they capture him or did they come to some negotiation with him to turn himself in?
Besided it would not be Cuba he would be returned to because we don't have an extradition treaty with them.
You might want to check but none of thoses used Diebold machines.
Carteret County, North Carolina used Unilect.
LaPorte County, Indiana and others used Election Systems & Software
Franklin County, Ohio, used Danaher
Unilect and ES&S and direct ties to the democrate party.
However if you look at the last election the machines with problems during the election and who made the news were not made by Diebold, and if you look at thoses companies you find that they had links to the Democrat party.
It happens all the time, where they will run out of paper. On most machines you will see now you will get a message informing you will not get a receipt then allowing you to contiue if you don't care, some older machines would just error out if they ran out of paper.
As for replacing the paper rolls, remember the problems in Flordia cam about because the people would not empty the boxes that held the used chads; are you willing to have the thoses same people in charge of replacing paper?
Yet another the US is to blame for helping others.
The CIA or other agencies never provided to support to Osama. We did provide support to various groups in Afganistans fighting the Soviets, some of then when on to betray us but a whole lot more of thoses people unfortunatly died fighting the Taliban.
In hindsight the US guilt in this is that they did not step in after the Soviets were expelled and help build a government, instead we just let them go off and do there own thing.
The UN resolutions against Israel are always worth a good laugh, such as forbiddening them from expelling a leader of people who goes around telling people to blow themselves up in shopping centers.
A lot of wrong stuff there, the only thing right is that you are staying it is tradition not a constitutional right that you see most of the time as the defense against this change.
The use of filibuster against judicial nominees is something that has been used just once in US history, back in the late 1960s, before and since then any nominee that confirmed by committee has been voted on. Blocking the person in committee has been the traditional way of doing it, you do have a few times there people wanted to filibusters judicial nominees but which never came about.
If you want to go with tradition then supporting this bill is probably the way you would be voting since it just codifies this tradition.
Also the filibuster has changed a lot over the years, even back in the 70(IIRC) it required that 2/3 vote to stop it vs the current 3/5 and before the 2/3 it could not be stopped by a vote, then in the late 1990 you did have the Democrats try make all types of filibustering against Senate rules.
Not really sure if the actual tradition should be codified in rules, however they should make it so that filibusters have to actually happen, I want to see if some senator can pass the previous record of speaking for over 1 day. Remove this sissy stuff of allowing the threat of it is enough to stop a vote.
The 2 girls is an interesting case, however it has nothing to do with section 805 or anything in the patriot act.
you have 2 illegal aliens, one of whom while being investigated by immigration is discovered to have written a paper about the glories of suicide and Islam. The immigration person who found that put it together with all the common news and thought "suicide bomber" and called the FBI. The FBI after reading the papers decided that there was enough threat that they should be arrested and they were then held because of there illegal alien status. Further checking them out freed them.
Would be interesting to see the papers but with them being minors the chance of any of this being freed from the gag rule is close to none.
With AC1 and 2 Microsoft was the actual owners of the game. Turbine had developed the game engine and was hired by microsoft to develop the game, Turbine also won additional contracts to continue the additional development and monthly updates. Also AC1 was initialy an internaly designed product; AC2 had alot more hands design on from microsoft.
Turbine is banking on the Asheron Call name for part of it because they are releaseing expansion packs and currently are in the middle of a heavy advertisement campaign in trying to get people to come back or even start the game as new players. However just name wise I am sure, as you say, that thier future is more based on D&D and middle earth online.
Tubine does sell the game engine, but I don't know of anything that uses it, but have not really kept track.
As for MMOG(anything not just RPGs) I cannot think of any that are based on movies except for some Star Wars games, even the final fantasy was based on previous games not the movie. But forgaming as a whole, in the past most movie based games usally don't do that well because they were just bad games using the movie as advertisment. However in the past couple of years you have started to see movie based games(Middle earth, chronicle of riddick, some of the super hero games) where the was developed seperatly and with high design features and then has tie-ins with the movie and they have been selling really well.
However with middle earth on-line(think they just did a name change) that will probably not be the case. The licenses Turbine has does not allow use of anything from the movie(images, voices, designs of places, etc) but only from the books so Turbine has to come up with there own design for how things will be.
In Florida and Texas they have a homestead exemption, so if you do file for bankruptcy you cannot be forced to sell your home. IIRC Texas has a it a little more easy in that they also cover some land larger then that in a standard housing lot.
The only people who say that EQ2 is a major grindfest are thoses that have never played the game, those that require PvP and since EQ2 will not have it for a few more month do everything to bad mouth it or thoses that require that they be at max level in 2-3 months.
Except that for President Bush to actually have lied he had to known that there were no WMD before he attacked, something no believed by the vast majority of the world's governments.
For Gore to not have lied would mean he knew nothing that he had acutally done.
First turned out to be a mistake, the second a definate lie done to exagerate his own reputation.
Please show a link to anything like thoses numbers. Not the made up numbers of 9600 cars to every truck, but the actual non-existant proof. The long ago disproved studies did not show anything that high.
The extra damage heavy trucks do has been long known and is used by states to figure out registration fees.
This pops up ever so often in PR stunts by railroad companies; personally I say support using railroads for long haul transportataion, but then again I own numerious stock in thoses companies.
There are a few that get discussed ever so often, but as soon as interest growns, the environmentalists come up and investors see the possibility of lawsuits and get scared off.
Colorado Springs/Denver has been discussed.
A Dallas/San Antonio/Houstin triangle would be of great use.
On other one would be a sacremento/las angelos which is still in discussion.
Considering that the for this was started close to 10 years ago, and they still have the environmentalist to fight, the chances of this happening are almost nill.
Unfortunatly the environmentalist will kill most of theses designs. They have been considering a Colorado Springs to Denver and a Dallas/San Antonio/Houston triangle but those have been some heavly dismissed by the environmentalist that they will never happen.
Eugenics was considered the science of the day, and was right up there as being a theory. it had been proven as was accepted by the general scietific community as being true. Granted it had only been truly proven on animals and plants but reading the lectures of that day and even the political discussions of the 1910s when various eugenic laws were being past and you have a repeat of what of the conversation between I.D. and evelution
The thinking about uclers was not fully accepted until 1994, and did not really start until 1982.
The earth moving around the Sun is based totally on work by Aristotle, he also went around killing off the theory that it was the other way around because that did not comply with his theories. While ARistotle did do alot of philosophical and political work it is hard to say that this falls under that.
General Relativity is a theory, in the same sense of the word as evolution is a theory.
Don't forget theses other great scientific theories.
Eugenics.
That all stomach ulcers are caused by stress and no way bacteria could cause it. Read the hardship that scientist went though tring to disprove that scientific truth.
Even that the earth stands still and the Sun moves around it. That was the scientific thinking for over 2000 years, and watch out what would happen to you if you disagreed with that scientific theory.
you know unilaterally invading countries who haven't attacked you
But luckly we got rid of Clinton and his pention do to that.
Under President Bush we initialed attacks on 1 country after they people under thier control attacked us and after long discussions would not turn over to us for judgement, afganistan.
Then he reinitialized attacks on one country that would not comply with rules it agreed to and based on world wide intelligence was building up weapons, then after even longer attacks proceded and did the right thing, Iraq.
Under the B.J. Clinton administration the USA attacked or initiated attacks on 10+ countries.
How is it like EQ2?
EQ2 you can solo all you want for decent exp and items.
EQ2 armor is worthwhile and can be found on mobs or purchased.
EQ2 is filled with content and things to do both solo and in group.
EQ2 is fun.
