i hope it doesn't occur at openbsd, but rather at freebsd. specifically, in getting rid of phk
he's really a detriment to freebsd. i used to be a big freebsd fan, but because of the stupid bullshit he pulls every year, i'm moving everything away from freebsd (to openbsd). especially after his stunt at bsdcan
besides, the way he operates is ass-baggy. geom sucks anyhow... why should we have to pay him to finish something he started?
i work in an academic department (versus administrative, etc) at a.edu (public, state/tax payer funded) that has a centralized IT organization
the centralized IT org is *very* MS-centric, when, in my opinion, they don't need to be
speaking from personal, direct experience, I believe this problem is a generational one. the "upper brass" all around campus is just waiting for retirement and doesn't want to be bothered with something new. i suspect this is fairly common at every university
i am in a different generation (mid-20s). in my formative years (read: getting into computers, making red boxes, etc), FOSS was beginning to organize and take shape and a lot of "us" took interest
i don't intend to be hostile, but, i see *very* few people over 45, at my campus, who have taken a keen interest in FOSS, let alone dropping $$-licensed software for FOSS
i was talking to Z at the installfest 2 weekends ago and he told me about this migration. it sounded pretty cool. we have been eying a similar migration too (primarily for authentication, not storage), but we're waaaaaay short on resources here =(
mirrordot is hosted at puregig internet, the same puregig internet referenced in the article. pg is also home to easynews
pg is an awesome provider. super fat pipes, excellent uptime, and *very* smart people. they're my uplink for home. sure, they're not the cheapest hosting or service provider out there, but they are completely worth it
Will I have to pay yearly license fees to drive my car...
no, but they will hit you up for "technology stack" licenses (tires, brakes, etc), but they'll really hit you up on client access licenses (passengers)
I would like to buy a cellular phone (actually, I don't, but that's not the point). Just a phone. I don't want a camera, or MP3s, garage door opener, sex toy, videocamera, or on demand movies. Just a phone. Do you have one?
that in this next year, we're educating the users by installing OO alongside MS Office. we've been doing this already for about 3 months and results have been pretty positive thus far
our choice was more of choosing between MSCA (pay $X every year, 'free' updates) and MOLP (pay $X once, use the software as long as you want, new version comes out, you have to pay for it)
we have spent $22k over the past 3 years on MSCA. this year was the final straw, since MS changed the licensing and is hitting us up for many more things (we are a smaller unit in a big.edu)
so, this is the last year we'll be doing MSCA. we have decided that for the next year, we will be educating users about OO (and Firefox) and encouraging them to switch and letting them know that next year, they'll be on their own for MS software packages

if that was the case, there would be one Bible and only one Bible. but, that's not the case

obsd's apache also has 6000+ lines of security diffs to upstream. dunno if that's important to you or not though ...
and for $600, i could get one machine that can fail and everything would stop working =)
that said, i am in the middle of replacing most of the machines. they are getting old. the new machines are much more power friendly

i work at a .edu that is a *huge* buyer of MS (not my choice). .edu-wide, we probably spend about $3 million US on MS licenses/year
speaking authoritatively for my dept (a very, very small one on campus), we have paid at least $30k to MS over the past 3 years
I suspect this is fairly common, worldwide

Section 226 -- Makes it unlawful to speak of the PATRIOT Act
"a matter of a few hours" is what i meant, but didn't type. sorry
you can usually measure it in hours
... it's probably already been fixed for a few months
openbsd
well, that's what i meant, i just extrapolated a little bit more 'cause pg was specifically mentioned in the article
u -to-friends 30.224/28 here btw =)

heh. you must be Z, E, or C
hello from M over in PSF =)
take a look at gmt. it's mostly for gis related stuff, but you can use it for damn near anything
generates postscript too, so it should be easy to integrate into your other docs

OK, so what about power, gas, water, sewer, garbage?
... very *few* need wireless internet. making everyone pay for something very few need (let alone want or *can use*) is wrong
there's a BIG difference between power, gas, water, sewer, garbage ("pgwsg") and wireless internet
everyone needs "pgwsg"

you mean those pesky antitrust laws meant to protect the people?
