"You're not required to do all those things, at least you shouldn't be. Alot of that is to be done by the parents, and if they don't do it, oh well."

So you think that a child should be punished because they have don't have well-educated parents or parents who can't be at home with their children 24/7 because they work 2 or 3 jobs? It's because of this line of thinking that the gap between the "haves" and "have-nots" is growing. Luckily the public school system has implemented programs like Head-Start to help those kids who aren't getting the pre-school education they need at home.

"Plus, the starting pay for a teacher is far better than what my father makes as a corrections officer, after doing it for years, or what my mother makes working in a nursing home."

Around here, a corrections officer can be hired directly out of high school. It does not require a 4 year degree.

I do agree that NAs (Nursing Assistants) are grossly underpaid and overworked, especially the ones working for nursing homes. But I think you'll find that most jobs that have been historically "female" jobs tend be the low-paying.

"I for one, am very hesitant to trust my eyesight to someone who doesn't feel that they can charge as much as another doctor, I'd gladly pay more to guarantee quality, and I suspect similar reasoning is used by corporations."

I got Lasik eye surgery a year and a half ago. When choosing my doctor, I didn't go by price. I looked at the clinics available in my area, and I met with a few doctors. I asked them what the price included, did they own their own equipment, how long have they been in business, what else do they do besides Lasik procedures, etc.

The doctor I ended up choosing was about $500 per eye cheaper than other doctors I had met. I didn't go there because of price, but because of their past successes, their professionalism (I was made very aware of risks and complications, and of what would be required to fix problems), and what the price included (3+ years of follow-up exams.)

Trust me - when it comes to Lasik surgery, you SHOULD NOT shop by price alone. I know a few people who have been burned by inexperienced doctors using rented equipment who have to charge higher prices because they are trying to become established.

I download MP3's because, most of the time, I can't tell the difference between a track straight off my commercial cd and the track encoded into MP3.

I've never tried downloading a commercial movie before. Is the quality really comparable to a DVD?

'Girl' is an infantilizing term for women. If these students were over the age of 11, they should be called "young women" or "young ladies." Or better yet, don't single out their gender. Refer to them as a "very smart student" or "very smart person."

I also wouldn't refer to a male student of the same age as a "boy" either. That is also demeaning.

I don't know about other schools, but our high school sports teams were refered to as "mens' hockey' or "womens' swim team". Our bathrooms were also labeled "women" and "men."
