  1. Re:Cisco IP Telephony on You Don't Know Jack about VoIP · · Score: 1

Cisco hasn't been concentrating on producing telephony features for the past 50-100 years like many of the pbx manufacturers out there have been and it shows in their product. I suggest you look at the Avaya ip products and the Telrad ip products. Both can do more(and have more features) than the Cisco for a lower price.

I don't know about other areas, but in my city, PRI circuits are designed so the company's pbx can customize the CID numbers any way they want. As long as the pbx is capable of doing this, they can appear to be whoever they want. I don't know the legality of using somebody elses number, but I do know that collection agencies here use multiple numbers with less obvious CID name info attached to them, as well as using lots of different numbers that they own. I don't see this as something the ILEC needs to fix since it's a feature not an error. The "hackers" who take advantage of this usually do so via voip or asterisk software switches. The company *38 could very easily be doing it completely legally and there is a legitimate use. oh well, sorry I rambled, being stuck inside labor day weekend totally sick blows... p

  3. Re:Some Thoughts from an Expert... on The Problem Of Unused Cabling · · Score: 2

Good comment. I occasionally end up pulling cable with the company we subcontract for cable runs. I have NEVER seen them remove cable. Simply because of the reason you stated. They don't know which to remove. If it were a case of removing all the cable, sure they'd do that. But 98% of the time the runs are being made to add to existing networks. I've never looked into it, but I've always been told (when I asked why we don't remove the unused ancient cabling) that it's not worth the time you pay the guys to pull it out. Maybe some of the earlier comments about electricians salvaging it are true in some areas, but here in Houston, I've never heard of that occuring. Only time cabling gets removed from any of my customer's sites is for a full remodel/renovation or fairly lengthy build-out.

As far as wiring goes, I do it when other business is slow and 200 dorm rooms with the setup you described should have been 20,000 dollars maximum. That university got ripped off really badly. I charge $100 a drop in an office environment and I'm only middle of the road for prices in my city. The lower cost companies do volume and have crews that only pull cable. They can sometimes underbid with $75-90 per hour. I think somebody was getting a huge kickback... -p
