It's not that I disagree with any of that, by a long shot.. it was just that they were talking about where the hardware can be found, not why not to use that particular family.
As to the last sentence.. well, if he can't disable the sound then it's either a real POS OEM machine already, or he's inept and should be using standard iMacs exclusively.
Thanks for that insightful comment. Very useful to all of us who were wondering just how much you don't like our computers.
Please, at least pretend to stay on topic. Let me refresh your memory, the question was who makes non-integrated motherboards.. not why do we use Intel hardware.
Wow, the editors of Slashdot accepted this bullshit but rejected 20 or so of my submissions?
That happens to all of us, but do make sure to read their explanation for their lameness^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hchoices on whatever page it's on here. Says something to the effect that they do what they want, when they want, and that's just the way it is, because they want it like that (nice and circular, no?). Unfortunately, this is an accurate breakdown of/.:
75% = Complete and utter BS and/or useless crap
10% = Stuff only the admins give a rip about
10% = The reposting of a story that had just run off the main page
5% = Actual useful and intelligent stories.
It is for that 5% that I even bother checking slashdot anymore. Even if most of the stories are like a week old by the time they get here.:/
Here, actually. It's a list of DVD burners (both PC and standalone, since it's related to VCDs) and their capabilities, plus reviews from owners.
I use it constantly to help friends & family to choose what DVD player (standalone) to buy, so they don't buy something that *only* does DVD and pay through the nose for it.
I've never used IRC. Although I do find it sad that you're able to identify it as such with ease.. you're prolly the guy who entices 12YO boys to meet with him aren't you?
As to the consistency thing, piss off. If you can't at least log in to say something, shut your mouth. Whiny little bitch.
Funny enough there's no mention of this on the eBay site...
There prolly was a week ago when the news broke about it though.. check web-caches and the like. That or edit the story to begin with "You probably already know about this, but..."
When has MS not screwed things up, or cared what's reserved unless it's reserved for THEM?
Oh, as to your.sig: Muslims aren't the problem. It's when they, for one instance, move to another country and never bother to learn the language they've moved into, or continue to drape themselves in laundry, or (and this is a big problem) they have no concept of personal property. I could go on about it alot more, but I'm already gonna get modded down for this rant.:p
My god man, you must have one hell of an anal fortitude to pull all that out at once. Here, allow me to take the piss out of your post.
The Pentium III is the same core that was originally sold as the Pentium Pro. REALLY. Gee, for a PPRO the P3 sure acts differently. Did the PPRO have SSE?
Now, about 18 months after its introduction, the P4 is scaling well. Have you even used a new P4 and a new Athlon to compare? I'd say not. The AMD still kicks the crap out of Intel, and anyone who USED them would know right away.
AMD, on the other hand, is struggling to wring a few more modest speed bumps out of the K7 before it limps along to the end of its design life. Also untrue. The K7 you're referring to is likely the one used in the "Athlon Classic", aka SLOT A. Of course it's gonna suck! There's different cores for Athlon, just like there was for K6, and P3. The Athlon 2100 has a new core, in fact.
The AMD partisans hold out hope for the K8, generally forgetting that the K8 is a K7 with a 64-bit bag on the side. See just above. I highly doubt that the Hammer is going to be a hacked Athlon Classic.
The only, and I do mean only advantage of a P4 over an AthlonXP is clock speed, which amounts to jack and shit in actual use. I don't particularly care, nor would anyone else save yourself, that the P4 MIGHT actually do something 5 years from now. 5 years from now != useful today. AMD and Intel both have their speedbumps when releasing a new processor and/or core, but at least AMD's offerings aren't reminiscent of using Win95 on a 386/16 (I didn't do that, got a used machine that had it on - godawful, lemme tell ya). AMD is consistently better in REAL performance than Intel.
Not their fault?!?!?!??? They made the damnable useless chip in the first place! Who's fault is it, Mine? jesus, where did you pick that crap up?
Anyway, you're wrong about pretty much everything there. 1) Intel is NOT in the moral right - they're selling us snake oil, plain and simple. 2)Intel DID design a chip solely for higher clock frequency. That much should be glaringly obvious (Bus speed of 500+Mhz vs 133DDR? HMMM..) 3)Whole new architecture - nope. Still X86, but utterly worthless in the real world. 4)End users know that they get email fast. Period. End users are morons. They're the nontechnical bunch. There is no reason for them to have bothered learning that AMD > Intel.. at least as far as they know.
Very true. But then there's the problem that most "sales associates" trying to sell you the latest Compaq or whatever have been trained by their employer and that's all they know about the machinery. So ethically speaking, they're doing just fine - being as honest as they've been taught. I've run into a couple real shitheads when buying PCs and/or parts, but they're one for every 30 or so.. perhaps less. The majority are younger people who still believe that their employer has everyone's best interest in mind (Best Buy, etc), and the end result is uninformed users buying a new PC from another uninformed user with "training".
That doesn't really work out. If I sell the 1MB for a nickel, then going by size the 4MB should be worth 20c.. so how could they be worth 'more per MB'?
If you've got a computer that takes 72-pin memory, there's converters that let you jack in 4 of the 30 pin chips per 72 pin slot. I've never used them personally, as my old 486's haven't got the headroom inside for the converters, but I figure that counts as 'something to do with all these damn 30 pin SIMMs';)
I forget what the names for them are, but I'm sure a google search for "30 72 convert simm" should turn up at least a couple results.
You could also replace lost Lincoln Logs with them, get the kids into hacking at an early age.;)
I've got a LOT of 1MB 30 pin SIMMs, and a smaller handfulof 4MB.. I'd be willing to part with most of the 1MB and some of the 4MB for cheap. Just reply to this with an email address (don't post it like blah@blah.com though). By cheap, I mean 1MB=$1, 4MB=$2, plus whatever shipping is. They all are known to work, and would arrive in nice silver static-protective baggies for ya.
While we're on the topic of 30 pin SIMMs, does anyone have any info on the 8MB 30 pins that my old 486 (Tandy) is supposed to be able to use? The largest I've ever seen is the 4MB.
One minor detail - Don't forget to bolt that webcam to the gun, so we can all watch that guy jump each time a rubber band leaves a nasty welt on his backside.;)
I actually just did something very similar to an 810 MB drive from an old Aptiva (Pentium 60!). Had to cut the plastic back on the connector and resolder the pin to the board. It's not very fun, but it's far from impossible.
Pull out a DMM and check for continuity from the pin side to the board side, and if one fails fire up the ol' soldering iron.:)
I wouldn't have attempted to do it, except that the drive was quite useless at that point - as I assume yours is from your question. You're really out nothing if you try it, unless you open the shell up. And FYI, the drive I soldered works perfectly.
Beware of bridging! Easy enough to remove one if it happens, but make damned sure there isn't any bridging before you plug the thing in.
That's actually what I intended.:) But to get one cig into the tray before you 'eject' it, it'd have to pop one in somehow, and that's the only way that comes to mind.
Any ideas for uses of old tape backup drives? I've got 2, one internal and one external.. they're useless to me.
The problem is that Charter Pipeline is raping us. We pay more money to them for much less service than we had with @Home, even discounting the bandwidth caps that are in place now. I want my friggin static IP back! Not just any one, I want the one that I paid for.
That's who I'm with now. I wish @Home hadn't gone under, they kicked ass..
The secretaries (I'm hesitant to call them much more) tend to be a bit nicer if you show up just after lunchtime around here. Maybe they take happy pills as dessert or something. *shrug*
I was told that my "service will not change" when I "switch to Charter Pipeline" (as though I had a choice, @Home died!!).. it was a load of crap though, for two simple reasons: @Home did NOT enforce their caps, and everyone had a STATIC IP. My service changed from "Useful" with that static IP to "Utter Crap" with this dynamic broadband bullshit. I can live with capped speeds, especially since it's still considerably faster than dialup.. but they should have defaulted the IP ranges that local cable companies were "assigned" by @Home to those local cable companies.
The reason I didn't want to is because of the ashes.. all my PCs have been outfitted with a inward-blowing front case fan. I can well imagine the mess that would make inside the case, let alone gumming up the processor fan (ack!!). If you took proper care while smoking, and sealed the 3.5" bay from the rest of the machine, it could work though.
As to finding an ashtray that would work, write down the measurements (HxWxD) and go to your local junkyard. If you want it to be springloaded, alter the measurements to provide for some rails, or even small 'wheels'.
Or, you could take those measurements and dig out an old Compaq 386 or an old IBM PS/2 and hack the case to bits of the sizes you need. The metal in those things would work well. If you go for that idea, you can even re-use the plastic 'blank' so nobody would guess it's even there.. until you open it and their jaws drop.:) For added effect, take the processor out of the machine as well. If it's got J-leads just glue it to the bottom of the ashtray.. if it's got pins cut the suckers off first, then glue.
An old single-speed CD-ROM (you know, the kind that hooked intoyour oringinal Soundblaster?;) could be modified as well.. hack the tray a bit, and make an area at the back roughly the size of a pack of cigs.. set it up so the tray works like those straw dispensers do. All you'd need is a 5 or 12 volt motor, a switch on the tray itself (to reverse) and a button to go behind the.. well, button. The cig dispenser would be harder to do, and even more pointless.. but it would be funny as hell.
Care to go into a bit more detail for your cigarette lighter mod? Plans would be ideal..
Is this in an all-metal case, and if not, how do you keep the plastic face from getting melty? I think I'll refrain from turning the unused 3.5" external-accessable bay into an ashtray though..;)
Come along then, back up your words. Post under a *REAL* account, let's see if you've even got ball one to show yourself when you speak.
Even if I am an asshole, I come by it honestly. What's you're fucking excuse? Did you get fed by your grandfather's dick when you were little or something?
As to any children I may have, that's none of your concern whatsoever. Most especially when you hide behind anonymity to speak. As I said before, you are a fucking coward.
As to the last sentence.. well, if he can't disable the sound then it's either a real POS OEM machine already, or he's inept and should be using standard iMacs exclusively.
