It won't help you solve *all* the problems, but I'm sure you could glom onto a few ideas from having a look at the way a MUD works. Here's one (telnet:// link).. they're based off of MERC, but you'll want to look at the code too so either snag a copy of ROM or QuickMUD (the latter of which is just ROM + Color + OLC + Copyover, basically snazzier to the players/builders:).
Ok, first let me say that this isn't a personal attack on you.. Do you knitpick television programs as well? My post was for amusement purposes only. In other words, "it was not a serious suggestion".
Why should I give a shit about two Ex-USSR guys? More to the point, why should I care about two ex-USSR guys WITH NO SURVIVAL INSTINCT? It doesn't take much in the way of a scientific backround to realize that heat without flame, that isn't from a geothermal source or the FUCKING SUN is likely a bad thing.
I do feel sorry for some people, however. I feel quite sorry for you.. but moreso your parents. Drowning at birth seems more and more appealing lately, the more moronic the generations after are becoming.
Also, as an aside, learn how to fucking type. You don't need to hit 'enter' when your text hits the right side of the entry box.
Apply a bit of logic to the thought. Obviously there would be some small ammount of shielding both before and after it's inserted.
Perhaps you're thinking of that kid who had his own Reader's Digest story. You know, the "super smart" kid who super smartly irradiated himself and his entire neighborhood? Well, I'm not that guy. Nor am I anywhere near the former USSR, so it's moot regardless.
And it was funny, you simply left your sense of humor in your other jeans.. or at least you should hope so. *snicker*
I, for one, am glad that those two have taken such good measures to see themselves removed from the gene pool. My advice should that fail, however, is somewhat reminiscent of Denis Leary: ".. and make sure you get your whole head behind the shotgun. Thank you."
Out of curiosity, does anyone know of any other potential uses for that particular material than a "dirty bomb"? Prefferably something CONstructive? mmm... self-powered pc with a small nuclear reactor at it's core..
Perfect use for my old Sony monitor I'd think. It's a GDM-1960 if I recall correctly. Huge screen on the sucker (comparing to the 14" I'm on right now, it's GIANT!).
Don't complain about the lack of size for a computer monitor, just pick up one of these things. They're not all that expensive. And, if someone figures how to just use a TV like the damn console was meant to do in the first place, there's mods you can do to the monitor to make it composite sync as well. Then just use it for the PC.:)
The only issue I can think of is the PS2's refresh rates.. anyone happen to know what they are? That Sony monitor wants a 100Hz horizontal I believe.. and before someone says it, I seriously doubt that just because both units are Sony that they're automatically interoperable.
XP will run on a shitload faster and more machines than Linux for the PS2.
Okay. If you had said that aloud, I'd be forced to ask you what kind of drugs you've got and if you're sharing. They must be good.:) The way I translate that sentence, you first state that XP requires a much faster than average machine to run on.. ok, I agree entirely. Then you do a complete doubling-back upon that and say it runs on "more machines". Huh? Pick one, not both.
I think what Sony is doing is great, don't get me wrong, but what the hell does XP have to do w/it?
Not much, really, other than M$ makes that and a console system as well. For some inexplicable reason, certain people here think that *NIX, *BSD, etc, would be l33t on the XBox. It's just a damned computer with a raped BIOS and some hacked (tho not by MS!) hardware as far as I can tell.
I can only run it on a PS2
uhh... no shit? That's why they called it "Playstation 2 Linux".
I need to get a ton of other hardware
What, you'd prefer to do kernel hacking with the Dualshock controller? *snicker*
and other than "dork value" even as an avid supporter of Linux I don't see the point.
The point is basically to see it done. Perhaps you've seen that one Star Trek movie, where Kirk is climbing the rock.. when asked why he did it, "Because it's there!" was the response. Same deal, except no William Shatner. At least not that I'm aware of..:)
I can't be bothered to check up on some feature that I don't use personally, but I'm fairly sure that it'll do it.. I know it does IMAP and I know it does SSL. The beauty of Moz is that if it doesn't currently support it, all you have to do is plop in a Bugzilla report and it'll likely get implemented sooner or later.
Yea, I wouldn't take digs on a whole country like that, especially THAT country.:) I completely understand why you'd prefer that nobody know who you are.
... of old systems. Just get the word out amongst friends that you're looking to glom on to any and all pre-1993 computers that you can. It works, believe me.
I've got many (working) 8088 through 80486 class machines out of it, as well. The ones that didn't work, or simply had no use to me, I tear down for components, including jumpers. From doing this, I've got two drawers full of useful expansion cards, a rack of hard drives, an armload of 32-bit x86 processors, and more jumpers than I care to count.:)
Not to mention spare keyboards, internal cabling, power supplies, monitors, printers, and modular cases. All of which come in just as handy for me as those little jumpers.
Ok. Maybe I'm doing something wrong here (doubtful), but I can't download the software for the thing. The download link is "javascript:startInstall()", I have Javascript turned on. The only thing I can figure is that it wants IE, which I'd rather pull all my teeth out than use.:) If anyone could mirror it, I'm really curious what it is..
Thanks. It looks like it *could* have possibilities, if that's a real smartcard reader/writer in there and not some questionably useful proprietary thing. It certainly doesn't look useful as a mouse pad - it appears to be just too damned small.
Out of the box, though, I'd say that it is the cliche AOLer's wet dream.:)
They're just using DHCP for the IP addresses/DNS servers/gateway..
In Windows, under the TCP/IP properties for your NIC just set *everything* to be automatically assigned. In Linux, it's just as easy except with config files.;)
I never did install their software.. I took the time to read their 'agreement' and said to myself, "Self, this is fucked," and proceeded to call charter's help number to lodge a complaint about it (the number they gave on their sheet disconnected me every time 6 seconds into the calls by the way - They don't WANT to help you, they just want your money). Eventually I found out that there wasn't anything special on the CD, and in fact an unnamed Charter tech rep termed the CD "a useless coaster", to which I wholeheartedly agree. If you know how, remove everything that the CD installed. Believe me, you'll be better off. If you don't believe me, stick it back in and go through the install routine *up to* the agreement and read it through, it's really quite invasive.
I recently went from Charter @ Home to Charter @ Pipeline.
Not that I care myself, but so others know, it's just called "Charter Pipeline".
Anyone else hate Charter?
You're damn right! I use it in Minnesota, and I must say it's quite shitty. The first thing that pissed me off was with @Home, I had a static IP.. but no longer. Now nobody can connect to my machine until I set up an account on ODS or something because they don't know where the fuck I am at any given moment. (I've only got a small "website" for myself, I used to run my own mail services because @Home's were dodgy at best, and I attempt to develop a MUD;)
My upload speed was always fairly crap, but now it's next to worthless. I haven't clocked it yet so I have no exact figures.. At least twice just this week I was forced to 'reset' the modem itself or not have net access. Thank you Charter for making me reset the fucker to your lower speeds. Of course, that's when I can even get connected. At times I have no net (no DNS to be specific - who wants to remember every IP number??).
Needless to say, at the first available chance I'll be switching to their local competition. I live in a fairly small "city" so I guess I'm lucky there's even broadband at all, but if their competition is better, then Charter can shove their service up their collective asses sideways.
I 've got an AMD K6/200 machine (which used to be Cyrix 6x86/PR-200) and Mozilla works fast enough to be useable. It could be faster, but it's "fast enough".
Back when I gave Milestone 12 a go it really sucked balls, but it's come a long way since then.:) Now I use it almost exclusively.. almost. I also use K-Meleon for a more lightweight Gecko-based browser with some frills (and a taskbar loader like Moz;), and OffByOne when I want a browser that works, and works blazingly fast. (though OB1 has no plugins support, javascript, java, etc.. it does do cookies tho)
A bit of warning though, Mozilla and K-Meleon loaded up at the same time will lag your system! My guess as to why is that you'll have essentially two complete instances of the Gecko engine loaded up, and they don't want to play nice together. *shrug*
Those are the ones I use in Winblows (three cheers for LiteStep!!).. in Linux I use Lynx, or I wget it and read it raw like all REAL men do!
I found instructions for building the DC VGA Box yourself not too long ago. It's a good-looking schematic (located here), but don't bother looking at it unless you are able to:
a) Identify electronic components,
b) Solder those components together, and
c) take a chance that you might fry your poor DC.;)
Think about how your monitor works for a second. A gray shade is made by providing roughly equal amounts of red, green, and blue.
If these e-paper things could do that, then it'd be more like the rollout displays on those shows. All we'd need is one of those, a minidisc-sized DVD player(with some kewl movies of course), and a sound projector to turn the whole room/park/vehicle into a giant surroundsound speaker... mmm...
Of course, it could just be the submitter or slashdot putting out a sentence without checking it for redundancy since it uses the British and American spellings of gray in the same sentence and doesn't appear anywhere in the article:)
So, how far off are rollout displays (Earth: Final Conflict, Red Planet, etc.) for my PDAs? Or for that matter, a cellular addon for pocket videoconferencing? *drool* I can imagine a rollout 72 inch wall-mounted TV, akin to the rollout white screen projectors use.. that plus a decent stereo and who needs to go *out* to the theater anymore?;)
At the risk of being labelled troll, "providing 256 grey shades of gray" is a stupid statement.. it wouldn't be 256 grey shades of color if it's grey, would it?:)
I wonder if it was like real (meaning american politics, voting booth and all that) voting, in that one could put down their own candidate. It would have been funny to see JarJar get in there somewhere..
I wonder if JarJar would have beat out RMS for votes.. they can both be equally annoying at times:
"Yousa call da system GNU/Linux-sa?"
Following Mother Nature's lead, Israeli scientists have built a DNA computer so tiny that a trillion of them could fit in a test tube and perform a billion operations per second with 99.8 percent accuracy.
Unfortunately, each one of them will fight with it's neighbor until none are left to compute WTF happened.
So how long until one of these, or more, are put inside the 'shell' of a virus, thus giving the fanatics a highly targettable and highly efficient biochemical/biomechanical weapon?

Gee, and I thought I might bring a bit more humor to the post. How silly of me. :P
Humor. English dictionary. Look it up.
