  1. Mining might not be such a bad option on Closer to Deducing the Origin of the Moon · · Score: 1

With better understanding of Moon's compsition, it might just help to eventually have a Lunar Station. If favourable metals/minerals are found, list of Raw materials needed to be hauled to moon might get shorter. With India, China, Russia, ESA, NASA all collaborating with each other, Lunar station might all of a sudden make more sense than International Space Station. Apart from the costlier trip, to me everything else make more economic sense. Who knows, maybe the new *NASA SHUTTLE* maybe capable of landing and taking off the moon. I just all hope all this happens in my lifetime, because to me a permanent presence in lunar station would really be the first time Mankind has really ventured into Space. Moreover, trip to Mars etc. will become easier too, with prehaps Spaceship for Mars being Assembled on moon. My question is How hard would it be to tractor all those empty full tanks onto Moon by an autonomous system?

  2. Re:Yes, mechanical parts WILL wear out on Advanced System Building Guide · · Score: 1

Agreed that hard drives have moving parts and there is wear/tear and so and so on... I am not going to beat around the bush about how long i've been involved with computers etc., but I can tell you whenever I have had failed drives, just for the hell of it (initially it was for the magnets) I have opened dozens and dozens of hard drives. I've had gone through all sorts of hard drive failures. I have open drives in which the head have actually crashed, had opened drive when the spindle is barely spinning etc. etc. but in all this time I have never opened the drive in which head actuator or motor or whatever you wanna call it has failed. So, logic behind having the second drive for swap to avoid wear and tear is not very smart. I can buy the fact that yes having the second drives takes more wear/tear but not very much more . Things you need to remember, on the regular drive spindle is still spinning, and head is still moving around, spindle doesn't speed up or down its constant, so any wear/tear on the spindle is out of the equation. Head on the other hand moves more often, and even on that, there amount of wear/tear required for the head actuator fail seems to be lot more than the spindle before it fails.(I am simply arguing that on the point that i've run into a failed head actuator) For me only reason to have a second drive for swap/scratch would be speed. and that would be the only reason. Wear/Tear isn't a big deal. I have run in more hard drive failure because of heat, poor power, and other physical factors than because the swap is on same drive. Just my two cents

Actually both your examples bear no similarity to copyright BS. First example is wrong because since you only make 50% extra because employee X can do the same task without a raise(that means you don't have to do it). Mechanic example is even more way off. He as to do manual labour. Your Car is unique, it has a unique problem, the mechanic has to specifically work on his car. Moreover just cause he worked & fixed his car doesn't mean no other car will have the same problem. Difference in both examples and Copyright infringement is, that they both are specific to the task, you do task a and you get $$$, you don't do it you don't get $$$. Moreover both cases are imperative, the boss still wants his work done, so he'll get it done, even if he has to pay someone else and obviously the car still needs to get fixed to be usable. Now compare that to Joe SixPack who claims that he wouldn't have bought the copyright material regardless. If Joe SixPack is true to his work, the author of copyrighted material isn't going to see any $$$ regardless of the fact if Joe SixPack downloads/pirates/borrows/copies blah blah his stuff. Not to sound as condoning copyright infringement..but to me it is human nature and very much capitalistic to pirate stuff. If you can get it for free why pay for it, doesn't that sound capitalism to you, how is that any different from Enron Execs. Only explanation I could/would buy for not doing copyright infringement, is that its morally wrong(in a socialist way). Its not wrong because law says so. Laws can be changed be it by invading another country or threat of invasion...or by buy ing out the politician...(add any other convient reason you see befitting). Morality on the other hand can't, you could be bought to ignore your morals but morals still stay the same... Uhm ...thats it...

Being Admin in Graphics Industry, one thing i've learnt, to scan slides you need a.) either a really high quality film scanner(they cost a bit more that average person might imagine) or b.) you need a drum scanner(which still is $$$$) Tranperency adapters just don't cut it. We've used scans from film (using drum scanners) and printed 40x28 Sheets ...without problems. In the end it might not really be a linux related issue...be it OS 9, WinNT4 or OS X or Win XP, Photoshop etc. are still stage 2. Stage 1 is get a high quality scan. On the plus side, there is colour management available on gimp.

In that case your numbers are awefully off too. For eg. the latest firefox&thunderbird was downloaded once by me. Yet its installed on about 200 machines. Simply because we use firefox/thunderbird by default now. Once downloaded its kept in a folder with all 3rd party apps that need to installed etc. Moreover, this way bandwidth is conserved too. Although its not huge, but have your tried downloading latest firefox etc the day its actually released. Same goes with openoffice too, although we don't use it at work, anyone wants a wordprocessing software etc., I burn them a copy of OpenOffice and tell em even though its free they should still register as openoffice user, cause it helps the developers to get a fair picture of how many users are using it.

Just wondering, like another poster commented as to what significance does this have? What would happen, lets say if first 5 planets are in transit? a) is it possible? b) has it happened before? c) I'd speculate, cause first 5 planets are in straight line with sun, there'd have to be some gravitational interaction between all these celestial bodies, could this be enough to lets say pluck jupiter's moon into its own orbit, or if conditions are right, what if one of Mar's moons get tugged into its own orbit, and we end with 10 planets...I don't even wanna think about Earth's moon...

Arguements on how End-user only use windows in their day to day jobs on windows, and therefore only need to use windows is baseless too, end-user will use any tool provided to him/her. Typically Doctors' job is to take care of patients, not write letters and reports, so it doesn't matter to them if they are typing their reports using staroffice, msoffice or koffice.
