I don't know of any talented developer who is concerned about jobs going to India. Have you ever worked with foreign outsourcing? They make me feel MORE secure in my job.
But those people are typically too poor to have high speed internet. They don't spend money. That's why everything is reality TV now. Anything else is too expensive to produce because the ad dollars just aren't there.
You want to tell an industry who constantly complains about a lack of talented workers than they should switch to a system where you hire twice as many workers to do the same work, and promise them this will somehow create even more available labor? Tough sell.
Perhaps no conspiracy, but I find it reasonable that the same effect could stem from a predisposition to look at "alpha male" types in a positive light, and "beta male" types in a negative light. Given identical misogynistic behavior, I feel like the "beta male" type is much more likely to be branded a creep or asshole, while the "alpha male" type is much more likely to be assessed with something like "boys will be boys".
Any job where you are treated poorly sucks. That's when you find a new job. In my 12 years in this industry I've never been in an environment where women were treated differently in any significant manner.
Now isolation is a concern, but in this industry that applies to blacks and Hispanics way more than women. I feel isolated at companies that want me to be friends with all my coworkers. I don't blame the company, or its hiring policies, or the gregarious people who work there. I blame bad luck at being in a sub-optimal situation, and rely on myself to fix it. At some point, it's up to the individual to get over their own issues.
I can't tell you how much of my purchased music disappeared after switching to iTunes. I had always used Dropbox for my music. But when I switched to iTunes, files would go missing all the time, and because there was absolutely no HDD organization I could never figure out what was missing. Instead I stopped using iTunes and the problem disappeared.
iTunes is a bloated, buggy, unusable piece of shit. If you don't buy into doing things exactly how Steve tells you to, everything falls apart.
If you're looking for someone with STL experience who is expected to be up to speed and generating good, idiomatic code, then these types of questions can help weed out people who know C++, but don't have a lot of practical experience with the type of code your company wants. It's not the best interview question, but it's not terrible, either. Unless they expect you to actually list every single one. If you can spout off array, vector, and deque; that's a pretty good start.
If that's the case, then perhaps they should start putting more Canadian shows on Netflix. I watch lots of Canadian shows on Hulu and Vudu, but Netflix seems to have a dearth of them.

Intelligence can be a liability when you are surrounded by people who continuously spew a stream on nonsense from their mouth holes. When you know every word coming from someone's mouth is utter bullshit, lies, misunderstandings, or misdirection, it's not appropriate to blame poor social skill when you treat that person like a worthless piece of shit.
I've worked in the field for 15+ years now, and I know of very few colleagues who would take issue with importing a talented coworker who has every intention of naturalizing.
Ummm... the people were angry they setup an ebola hospital in their neighborhood. I think they're at least vaguely aware of modern medicine and germ theory or they wouldn't be distraught about the disease center being close to where they live.
It simply doesn't matter. The job applications process doesn't affect corporate branding and is intended - primarily - to weed through a huge number of candidates and reject the vast majority of them. There's simply no value to spending time making these systems good. One might say they even serve to weed out people not dedicated enough to deal with the bullshit.
The one exception is if you are web shop looking for developers. Then your application process better be flawless or you're going to attract some pretty terrible applicants.
That's ridiculous. We already lived through centuries of society where it was easy to measure physical strength when physical strength was a strong indicator of work success. This did not lead to the stratification of the physically weak from the physically strong.
