I think you're right, because I also get very little spam through my work account (I could count the number of spam for this whole year on one hand). But its not because it gets filtered, we only recently implemented spam filtering on the mail server.

Anyway, I was shocked when I found out how much spam my co-workers get... I guess they are a lot less careful where they make their address public. However, one time we were setting up new employee's machine and before he'd even enabled and checked his mail for the first time, he had several dozen spam emails in his account! And he didn't have an easy-to-guess name. I have no idea how they got that address...

When I was in high school, we spent the last two years doing nothing but playing Quake DM over the classroom LAN. Most of the time the teacher ignored it and kept rambling, in the hope that people would listen to him between respawns or something :)

Other times he would get pissed and pull the BNC terminator off the last machine in a vain attempt to stop the game. Then he just tried deleting all the copies of Quake of the computers, so people would have to resort to loading it back on each week or so from floppy.

That was defeated when I created a hidden 30mb partition with the Quake install files on it, so even after he had cleaned all the machines the server would be back up and everyone playing within 5 minutes of the lesson starting. That pissed him off the most cuz he had no idea how we were doing it ;)

Anyway, a year or two after finishing high school I went back to drop off something, and stopped by the computer lab. I told him how we'd done it, and removed the partition for him- it was still there 2 years later!

Of course you need to own the game - he was talking about using his own pak files anyway.

Was he asking whether he was allowed to copy, for example, the binaries off his friend who bought the windoze version? I would wait until id released them officially, as you said. It should be pretty soon anyway...

As for the CD key, yes it will work because it is authenticated with id's master server, so has nothing to do with your platform.

No, its perfectly legal. id themselves distribute the binaries. With Quake2 (for which only a win32 version was created), you can freely download the linux executables.

I think people should try not to trash things like this outright, as the majority of the scientific community seems to be doing on instinct.

Sure, I'm cynical just like everyone else, and suspecting that all he is after is a quick buck - but when you think about it, one day, a guy just like this is actually going to be right. You may say "flying saucers, pfft", yet you must agree that we are going to get nowhere with the current propellant / combustion based systems. So someday, these super new technologies are going to have to be invented, right? Think about how far we have advanced in a mere hundred years - where do you think we will be in another 100?
Do you think we will slowly evolve the technology from what we have now to flying saucers with limitless energy sources? I don't think so: once things like this are discovered and announced, it will become commonplace within a few years if it is truly ground breaking technology.

Scientists will refuse to beleive anything like this until it is clearly proven to them (and may not even beleive it then), because it destroys a lot of facts they held to be true. In fact, some may feel they have wasted years, or even their whole lives in a certain field which has just been shown to be irrelevant or based on mistruths. So we can't expect them to back up anything like this, even if it does turn out to be correct. Then again, it is the done thing to present findings like this for peer review, which as far as I know, has not been done. So, its fair enough that they aren't convinced.

We have to invent these technologies sometime; one day all those visions of the future that seem so far off will become the present. Someone has to invent it - and although a lot of these kind of ventures are probably scams, somewhere in there is one that will shape the future.

  12. Possible reason for id not telling us on Another Software Spy · · Score: 1

A lot of people have commented saying that the part they are most pissed off with is that they weren't told. Others are saying that there should be an option to not report your information to id.

Wouldn't either of these reduce the accuracy of the marketing data? If people were asked whether they wanted to contribute their renderer information, this would not produce a complete picture of the user base.

You might argue that the people who refused to "participate" would fall into all different categories, so that the numbers would average out in the end. But what if, for example, a higher proportion of Linux users (which tend to be more security / privacy conscious in general) did not want to provide their data? id would end up with the impression that there are a lot less people running the linux version than there are, which can't be a good thing.

Even if there was no option to disable the reporting, but it was still made public, people would find ways around it. Again, this would result in id not getting a complete representation of the market. And do you think anyone would refuse to play a game because just it reported their video card information? (remember, we are hypothesising that id *had* informed everyone).

Personally, I don't mind it - I still trust id, and will still buy the game. Like the guy on linuxquake said, maybe they will use the data to show the world that linux is a serious gaming platform. I would like to assume that they want it to help provide us with a better game, rather than line their (already overfull ;) pockets.

  13. Player View Models on Ask John Carmack About Quake - or Anything Else · · Score: 2

    John,

Since the early days of Quake, and with nearly every FPS since, I have always wondered "why isn't the model that you see the same as what everyone else sees?". Or more simply "why can't you see your feet in games?".
I figured it had something to do with poly counts - you want more detail on your weapon than what you want to see on every other player. But in these days of GPU's (geforce) and MRM (multi-res mesh - see TF2), poly counts are going to be increasing by a huge amount anyway.

What I would ultimately like to see is firstly, my own feet, and secondly, the same animations on other players that they see on themselves, eg reloading sequences. Is this ever going to happen?

I live in the biggest non-capital city in australia, and I can't even get cable access. Even if I could, it would cost me $540 to install, and then $90/month. Every Mb over the limit of 200 is 33cents. Its not exactly what I'd call affordable.

It really shits me when I hear every day about these peeps in the US with xDSL, cable, or faster, whereas I have to dial up on a fucking modem. I wonder why everything with computers is getting bigger better and faster, yet I am still stuck on the same crappy analogue line I was on years ago.

They are *such* a monopoly - I've read many articles on how they are frequently going out of their way to crush smaller companies who try to offer competition. I can't believe this has gone on so long... I sure hope this helps to change something.
