  4. Re:Biggest geek movie until X-Files? on Batman Discussion · · Score: 1

The word "geek" has changed shape over the years and obviously doesn't mean what it used to.

Nowadays "geek" means just more than comic books and gaming and has been transformed into someone who is into the latest gadgets and technology. But, it doesn't stop there, a geek is so much more than just Mr. Technology, gaming, and comic books: Geeks actually get laid nowadays and can actually make a social setting work for them. A "geek" does all of the old stereotypical geek things, but geeks try to be well-rounded in all aspects of life. They party it up, they play sports, they have girlfriends, they travel, but on the opposite end of the spectrum they can still hack the planet, watch anime', play crazy hours of WoW & AoC, have their entire house networked and play with all of the new technology, etc..

On the other hand, the word "nerd" has been shaped to take over a lot of the negative aspects of the word "geek". Nerds are your basic pocket-protector, comic books, tabletop gaming, and pretty much anti-social type of people. Nerds are the ones who don't get laid and are terrified of social settings. "Nerds" are the ones who are scared of girls, who live in their parent's basement, are usually overweight or really skinny, live in their imaginary tabletop gaming worlds, and who are the epitome of your old stereoptyical "geek" and "nerd" labels.

I'm surprised how many people haven't been keeping track on how these words have been changing over the past few years.

It's good to be a geek.

Not so good to be a nerd, though.

  5. Re:What do you consider "beating" WoW? on Can Anyone Beat WoW? · · Score: 1

Having the most subscribers does NOT mean it's the best game out there.

More people go to McDonalds than they go to Wendy's, but that surely
doesn't mean that McDonalds has better food than Wendy's.

I could go on and on and on with examples, but I think you get the idea
    there.

Just because you have the numbers, doesn't mean you are the best.

Ever heard of: Quality vs. Quantity?
    eh?

  6. What do you consider "beating" WoW? on Can Anyone Beat WoW? · · Score: 1

When we speak of "beating" WoW, what are we referring to really?

Are we saying that to "beat" WoW someone needs to:

    o make as much money?
    o have as many subscribers?
    o have better content?
    o have better graphics?
    o have better gameplay?
    o have better combat?
o have a more mature following?
    o a better storyline?
    o better quests?
    o better classes?
    o better equipment?
    o better character creation?

There are way too many variables when even trying to consider how you
could say you have beat WoW. In my experience, having the most subscribers
does not necessarily mean that you have the best game. Yes, WoW has by far
the biggest subscriber base, but that does not mean it's the best game out
there right now. It also doesn't mean that it will continue to be the best
game out there, if you actually say that it is the best game out right now.

WoW took the best (or the most widely used) concepts from MMORPG's and threw
them all into the stew. They made sure those concepts (gameplay, etc..) were
easy enough that a 5-year old could manage them. That's why they have had
such an influx of subscribers. People are getting their kids, wives, aunts,
uncles, mothers, fathers, etc.. to play this game because it's so damned easy
to play. That does _not_ mean it's the best game out there.

Looking at some new games coming down the pipe, Age of Conan looks to me to
have a very bright future indeed. The mechanics, combat, mounted combat, and
tons of new things that WoW will never bring to the table are going to make this
game pass WoW by leaps and bounds. Does that mean that they will have more
subscribers than WoW? Probably not. But, that does not mean for one little
second that WoW is a better game.

There are tons of games out there now that have better graphics, better combat,
better quests, better character creation, etc..

In my eyes, World of Warcraft is not the best game out there. Not even close to it.

Actually, here are the facts: Auto racing is the number one live spectator sport in the United States. In 1984, soccer passed baseball as the most popular team sport in the United States. So, I guess soccer is the most popular sport in the World AND the United States. :)

    Uh, where have you been?
Soccer IS catching on in the US.
It's the fastest growing sport in the US.
It's also the world's most popular sport.

Why is baseball the favorite sport in the US?
Because we're a bunch of lazy turds who like
to stand around doing nothing. That's baseball.
Tell me that you actually consider a baseball
play an athlete and I'll laugh at you.

    Play a real sport: soccer.

Your generalizing that "we" think soccer is a bad
sport, etc.. is just that: generalizing.

I disagree with you entirely. I really liked SpellForce: The Order of Dawn
quite a lot. Not only did it have RPG qualities, but they mixed in the RTS
as well.. and they did a great job of it. This was the first type of game
I have ever played like this and it blew me away.

Don't get me wrong, there were a lot of bugs and a lot of mis-spellings and
there were some other technical problems, but all-in-all, I thought the game
    was quite excellent.

I didn't get to play the Expansions as the Beta for World of Warcraft took
over and I've been playing that ever since.. and of course, Oblivion is going
to be coming out next month *crosses fingers*... but, it's still a game that
I would pick up and play anytime.

Especially when 2 comes out.. :)

Also note, there is a HUGE fan-base out there for SpellForce, and I would
imagine that most of that fan-base is not in the United States (not that
that means anything, just an extra note. ;)
