Is MiB considered Sci-Fi? WTF kinda question is that? "Is TJ-Hooker a cop show?" *eyeroll*

It's reviewed because most of the Slashdot readers liked the first one and are concerned the second one won't be worth seeing. It costs about $7.50 and 90 minutes to find out. (some of us have GF's to drag along too, make that $15 plus the time it takes for her to change her clothes :P)

Personally, I'm happy that Slashdot reviews the movies. They saved me from watching Resident Evil.

  3. It's fun watching you all miss the point... on Review: Men In Black II · · Score: 4, Insightful

I swear, you people are self destructing yourselves so that you can't enjoy the $7 spent on watching a movie.

So far, I've read a lot of comments like 'unoriginal' or 'repackaged' or 'sucked' or whatever.

    Blah blah blah.

You guys are kinda missing the point to watching a movie. The idea isn't to get exposed to some killer plot, the idea is to have fun. That means: Don't take it too seriously. MiiB is not part 2 of an epic trilogy. It's a comedy, it's meant to entertain for about 90 minutes or so. And it does do that. But, if you sit there being all critical about it the whole time, you're ruining it for yourself. Blame the movie if you want, but remember that's your $7.50 you're burning up.

The first problem I see is that it's being horribly overanalyzed. One guy went on to say "they shouldn't have written out the chick at the end of MiB, bad bad bad.". Err okay. So you didn't like the movie because it didn't extend the first one by 90 minutes.

Another guy went on to say '...another Wil Smith pop-corn action movie.' Can you say 'oversimplified'? Put it like that, and anything can sound stupid. 'Slashdot is like another Wil Smith pop-corn action movie'. See my point?

You can't possibly enjoy a movie if you sit there and pretend you can make it better. (you can't. All you can do is 'fix' the problems you see with it.) Instead, just sit down, watch it, have fun. MiiB is meant to be silly. It's not meant to be epic, it's meant to be fun. Smile.

If it's not your type of movie, don't go see it. Don't bug us about it either. We clear?

As for being 'as good as the first', it kind of reminded me of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2. People didn't like GB2, though it did develop quite a following later on. Will MiiB do that? Hmm prolly not. But it was a fun movie either way.

    It kicked Episode II's butt.

It's easy to oversimplify and say 'Oh, America pokes it's nose in other people's business.' Let me ask you something, if Pakistan and India exchanged nuclear fire, would you want us to 'poke our heads in' or not?

Let's put things into perspective; America is big. America's economy touches everyone else's. Imagine what'd happen, for example, if suddenly we couldn't get oil. Gee, can you see uber-depression? Can you imagine the economic disaster that would cause in other countries?

It's silly to say 'Oh, America is just looking for trouble.' Yah, whatever. It's easy to hate us because we're so diverse and the reasons create themselves. 'America had 2 shootings in schools. It must mean that all Americans are gun toating freaks!"

"All the pieces are ready, its just a matter of someone gluing them together into a coherent desktop."

I agree with this comment. I just installed Redhat last week at work, and it was easy in some respects, hard in others. (as if anybody knows what the vertical AND horizontal resolution of their monitor is.) I'm still tweaking this and that to make it usable for what I'm doing. I'm happy that by default, nearly everything worked. I didn't have such luck last time I used Redhat back in version 6.

I still have two chief complaints right now: Thre are too many places where I can screw up and break it. Case in point: Disc 3 of Redhat 7.3 was bad. I discovered this during the last phase of the install. It immediately gave me the choice of 'reboot'. No 'try the disc again' or 'reboot, then the install will resume'... I had to go through the 2 hour process all over again. (This is Redhat's fault though, I'm not blaming Linux for it. Linux hadn't even started yet.)

The other is that I had to run out to shell in order to get Samba working. This was so I could talk to the other machines on the network. I'm a newb here so maybe I missed something, but there didn't appear to be a graphical way of mounting Samba shares in KDE. (Any insight into this would be GREATLY appreciated.)

As you said, the pieces are there. They need a design group to come in polish it up. Hell, I wish the Linux community could throw a few hundred thousand dollars at Apple and have them do it for us as a consultant. That'd be bad ass. I know it won't happen, but still. :P

"Why throw eggs, when you can make them look bad on a technological level, which is where Linux and the Linux crowd excells anyways?"

Because technology isn't everything. Design and ease of use are also HUGE requirements to a desktop operating system. Linux is still very much behind in that area. KDE's not bad, but it still has a ways to go.

Hopefully KDE (or Gnome, or anybody else really...) will look at what Apple did with OSX and BSD and and try to replicate it. The goal? To make it so the average desktop user never needs to use Linux's shell. When that happens, Linux will indeed be the favored OS of choice.

Apple already figured this out, and what they did is pretty damn cool.

  17. They shouldn't be suing anybody... on RIAA to Sue You Now · · Score: 1

They shouldn't be suing anybody. It's the Music Industry's fault. They do nothing to educate music buyers about what's right and wrong.

Think about it: You go to the store, you buy a radio, you turn on radio, boom you have music. You can buy a tape player and record that music, no harm done. When you want to hear a specific song over and over again, go buy the CD. You're paying for convenience.

People have no reason to believe that music is anything but free. So when music sharing becomes popular, the RIAA has the NERVE to try to block it. Of course people aren't going to like that! Hell, I'm tempted to use the word 'entrapment' here.

I think the DW movie was in 96, if not it was 95.

I don't think it was the good effects that made the DW movie startling, it was that it ran at 24 fps. On TV, the show ran at 50 FPS (PAL) and was brightly lit. Frankly, I hope they retain that. I think the faster frame rate helped me imagine I was watching two people actually having a convo, rather than watching a series of cinematic events.

I feel pretty strongly about the 50fps thing. I really hope they keep that. I have a feeling, though, that they'll try to give it a visual style not unlike Farscape or X-Files. That could ruin it.
