Overrated? It was funny! I mean seriously dudes, isn't it convenient that MS was the butt of this bounty and not the Playstation 2? I'm sure rationalizations can be cooked up, but when all's said and done, it's pretty clear that the bounty was an attempt to poke at MS.

Frankly, I'm not sure I'd like the idea of investing in a company who intentionally tries to draw legal fire from Microsoft.

This sounds 'informative' util you think about it. The author is intentionally implementing the feature in question. He knows very well what he's doing to the browser because he's intending for that to happen. You don't just use frame code and cross your fingers that it'll do what you have in mind.

This patent is silly, but this reasoning isn't helping.

Nice troll. So how long does it take to transfer a 5 meg file into RAM on a decent laptop hard drive?"

I'm surprised this was modded as troll. NG's point was spot on. It'd take like 2 seconds of HD access to cache a song into RAM, as opposed to streaming it for the entire length of the song.

The AC could have figured that out just by thinking for a second or two about it, instead he made a heated commment intended to make NG sound stupid.

The troll point went to the wrong post.

"Translucent windows is eyecandy and good for demonstrations, but that's pretty much it. Other than that, they're usability nightmares and harm productivity."

Not for me. I have a desktop switching app (called Altdesk, it's for Windows though) that has this tiny bar with all my desktops and apps on it. It's an 'always on top' window that I have at the bottom right above my Start Menu.

Unfortunately, it blocks information occasionally because some apps throw stuff there. It blocks Opera's message about how fast stuff is coming down, for example. No problem, the bar's transparent. I can still read the stuff plus see what each button does.

You're right that it's limited, though. The bar is only icons, and the stuff below it is only text. I don't think it'd work if it were text on text. I'm just saying you can't apply an absolute rule like that here.

The sticky issue there is that you cannot scientifically classify anything as 'clear-cut'. It's never that black and white.

Personally, I think the opposite should happen. The more that's known about artificially created deadly diseases, for example, the more that's known about how to identify and cure them.

I'm a little surprised this clever bit of satire was modded as troll. It's a reflection of the anti-MS crap that flies around here. What's clever about it is when you translate this into literal english, it sounds like "When he uses something of Microsoft, everybody knows it's very bad." That's what Cmndr Taco sounded like in this flamebait article.

  9. Re:Who is the target consumer for this P.O.S. ? on Analyzing the Microsoft Tablet PC · · Score: 1

"After reading the review, this thing sounds like a nightmare." -- It should, the user who posted the story intended it that way. It's a troll. They didn't even point out that this is NOT a TabletPC.

"...it costs more then a basic laptop..." -- (assuming you mean TabletPC and not the device that was reviewed) It is just starting in the marketplace. The displays with this type of sensitivity are expensive. Like the thousand dollar portable DVD players you mentioned, the price goes down. It won't always be that way.

"...its much more difficult to setup..." -- Again, the device mentioned is not a TabletPC. A Tablet PC's setup really should only be "click here, here, and here to calibrate." If that.

"...it has a very slow processor compare to a lappy..." -- Today it does, that'll change. Price, yadda yadda yadda.

"and it doesnt do nearly as much as a laptop" -- A TabletPC does as much as a laptop. It's a laptop with a stylus sensitive screen. If anything, it does more than a laptop because then you can do handwriting and sketches etc on it. But right now, it's in the early adopter phase. This product is NOT for you. Perhaps in a year or two.

"so just who is this targeted towards?" -- The thing in this article is targeted to a small niche of people. TabletPCs are targeted to the mass audience, but will likely find it's hope in business settings. For example, got a document to correct? With a Tablet PC, you can draw on the document itself, circle stuff, write notes, etc. It's supposed to be like paper. I can tell you that'd be useful where I work. We got through lots of paper and toner a day for that type of editing. Though I doubt we'll run out and buy TabletPCs, I'm pretty sure that the next upgrade cycle (about 2 years from now) quite a few people will end up with them.

Right now, processors are fast enough. Now we need better input devices to keep up. That's what the point of a Tablet PC is, to improve the input bottleneck.

    - Personal servers. I'm not talking about web servers, though those would be nice, rather I'm talking about leaving a box on all the time with a huge hard drive in it. I'd liike to keep my music and videos etc on it so that I can access it anywhere in town.

    - DoS attacks against things like root servers would not bring down the ability for these people to communicate. The attacks would have to be community specific.

    - Disaster relief. It's been proven before that the internet can be resilient to disasters such as earthquake. Useful maybe?

I should probably note that I'm not taking into account the town this is in. I'm imagining it existing here in Portland. Personally, I'd like to have my apartment complex all on a shared lan. I'd like to get to know my neighbors better. It'd be fun to have lan games etc.
