The Slashdot Community tries desperately to be funny, but few people can actually create new jokes. Occasionally, somebody resurrects something humorous from the past and places a fresh spin on it. However, much like a Hollywood movie sequal, they get milked into retardedness.

Before Mr. Smirnoff (explained in another response to this thread), it was "1.) Blah blah blah, 2.) blah blah blah, 3.)?????, 4.) Profit". Before that, it was "Imagine a Beowulf cluster of these!" Before that, it was "Herr herr, Windows crashes."
For a while, it was "All your base..." ... and.. well I don't remember the rest. All I can say is one day in the not too distant future, I'm going to stumble across old /. articles and I'm going to cringe at the bad attempts at milking humor. (In Soviet Russia, bad humor milks YOU!)

This would not work. Period. All they'll see is that there's a decline in sales. Where do you think they'll place the blame? Hint: Their first assumption won't be that they're being boycotted.

At best, it'd backfire. Ironically, it'd probably be useful to give them more money. As silly as it sounds, the RIAA sounded incredibly idiotic when they claimed that Napster cut into their sales while they were at the peak of their sales.

I bet you a contributing factor to the dismissal of the SSSCA was that the MPAA couldn't make legitimate claims of losses. If people really did shift over to P2P like the *AA fears, then a different story might have emerged from that whole ordeal.

"How much closer does this get us to overturning the law? What exactly did we win?"

I wouldn't be after overturning of the law. The truth of the matter is, that'll never happen. There'll always be a need to define what 'Digital Copyright' is, and for that reason alone that law will forever be frozen in place.

It isn't worth trying to fight the whole law. Instead, what you can do is take little pokes at it here and there so that common sense starts to permeate through it.

This case is a good example of that. It basically means that a company can't go running around crying "DMCA!!" just because somebody made something that could be used to 'violate copyright'.

I'm curious if this can create ripples in the DeCSS case. (If it's not too late, I haven't kept up on that in a while.) If the kid made that program so he could watch DVDs in Linux, then he falls in the same category that ElcomSoft was in when they won. "We didn't do it to intentionally break the law."

This could open the door a crack to lifting the reverse engineering clause of the DMCA.

... Ironic to me at least. The MPAA claims that video over the net has to be locked up in a chastity belt in order to survive. Yet, the porn industry has been able to thrive even in a highly saturated market.

It'd suck if this caused a damaging blow to the porn industry. It's probably the best proof out there that the internet *is* a place where people can make money with content without having to use DRM.
