Even though I've got grandma running Linspire, it does still not quite work intuitively enough for some applications, like printing proof sheets of photos, scanning or managing her photo albums. BUT she can install software in a snap using Linspires "Click and Run" system, which makes it really easy and puts an icon for you on the desktop... all in 1 click. I would not let her use distros like Ubuntu or Mepis, as those are great for beginners, they are still not for the "ultra newbie" and "forever a newbie" like grandma. But anybody with any sense of doing a bit of their own troubleshooting should have no problems.
I've completely changed the look of the site and took out a lot of the garbage. Better now?

There are now two towns and a vast wilderness/fields between them. You can also explore sewers, dungeons and death realm. There is combat and skills training. Probably a bunch of other stuff that I can't remember at the moment.
Apart from the fact that you miss the whole point of making a site completely with CSS (no table, etc...) because it has the added side-effect of being very good for lynx/links, you know there is an alternative slashdot site which is very minimalistic...
Why would you ever want to apply a usuable and friendly interface to slashdot? This is a site for techies, it should be slightly more difficult to navigate than all other big sites on the web. Wouldn't want to make it to "easy"... might start getting a lot more mac users here.

You are completely right, my site looks like something from the late 90's! Which is basically the extent of my design abilities. I suck at design. I don't have any design smarts. I program the back-ends to sites, that is all. I will eventually go have a look at oswd.org and apply a good looking modern css template to my site.
I like it.. but it does have a bit of "lifeless" feel to it. Standing back and looking at it as a whole from a distance, somehow it seems broken, like something were missing or it has inappropriate shading. But what do I know.
What I would like to see is someone creative design a brand-new example site for slashdot. Nevermind that you won't win, but how about stop complaining and make something that looks great (and isn't bound by taco's rules). I would make something myself if I had any design capabilities and weren't colorblind.
Maybe it's just me (is it?), but one thing that really bugs me about slashdot currently is the serif fonts. It bugs my eyes out. I like san-serif fonts because they look crisp and clean, easy to read.
I say let the top 10 designs all be used. Select the best as the default, then let the user decide which template to use in their preference settings. It's CSS afterall, isn't it?
Switching CR/LF to ^M and vice-versa is easy with joe. I have a hunch that anything that can be done with vi/vim can also be done with joe. Joe has regex also you know.

I've tried on and off since 1995 to get into using vi/vim and I just can't. I am unable to make it work as smoothly as "joe". That's right, for my choice of console-based editor, I use niether vi or emacs! "joe" has been doing everything I need a text editor to do easily since 1995. I cringe when I have to use vi/vim.
I know I will get flamed for this. Oh well, it's the truth. I'm sure there are a few others that would agree with me.
I was a Rogers customer for a long time and dupmed them when they started implementing restrictions. I am now with a small local DSL provider and everything works again and the speed is fine.
The show was fine and great when they stuck to just busting paranormal crap... but then they started doing all the political shows. Made be lose all respect for the show and I can't watch it anymore.

Planeshift (from planeshift.it) is a really cool game, which is also free and open-source. Many people play it. Like myself.

You're running EI7... this is slashdot. You should really be using any other browser rather than IE! What kind of techie are you?
..your site looks like it was made by someone that only uses vi.
Notepad is the probably the worst text editor in history.
but yet even I use syntax highlighting (in joe)!!! I don't understand why you wouldn't want it.

Why would I want 96kb individual songs when I could be downloading entire albums at 256kb?
Nah, just stupid stuff like for example a show on "second-hand smoke is not bad for you" strikes me as fairly assinine on their part.
Then how will I download the latest version of Ubuntu?

P-NES is probably a lot worse than Wii.
Yeah, they are nice, but you are not allowed to duplicate/use stuff from zengarden. That's why I prefer oswd.
