  1. Mapwing is a lot like this, though user built on Windows Live and Privacy · · Score: 1

http://www.mapwing.com/ is a lot like this, though user built and a bit more controlled. Users can take street level images and associate them with points on a map. Then these points can be connected together, enabling users to take a virtual tour of the mapped region. While large scale street level photography is nice, it is going to take more control and human input to make a first person virtual world.

  2. Original file may ONLY play on Macs... on Apple Easter Egg · · Score: 5, Informative

I noticed some people complaining about being unable to play the bittorrent original movie file. I suspect this is because of the age of the file. It was probably made using QT 1 or 2 and is in the ancient "Video" compression. Also, the file uses the classic mac resource identifiers and lacks a file extension. Anyone having trouble might try adding .MOV to the end of the Our Gang! file. The file DOES work on Macs though using QT.

  3. Re:POS: format isn't recognized. on Apple Easter Egg · · Score: 1

The file was probably made using QT 1 or 2. It uses the old Video compression. I'm not sure what effect this would have on other platforms. Does the Window QT API support the Video compression? I have a Mac running X and it plays fine in the most recent version of QT player.

  4. Not new, but newsworthy... on Apple Easter Egg · · Score: 1

While knowledge of the easter egg has been around for a while, it was never made widely available. There are older websites documenting where and how to get to these types of things. However, the Quadra AV machines were relatively unpopular and by the time the internet took off as a viable mainstream way of sharing, most Mac users had lost or forgotten their older machines. That seems to me to make it news worthy. This is the first time everyone had a chance to see it. Plus it has a pirate flag and the team, which makes it a cool piece of Apple history!

The question remains what they will do with those logs. For instance, the logs would show who visited the pages, what they clicked on, and what torrent files they downloaded. However, downloading a torrent file does not translate into actually downloading the copyrighted material. I'm not quite sure how it all works, but they may go after the individuals who uploaded the torrent files. That would make the most sense. -the Goat

It is news like this which causes me to drink more Dew. More and more ISPs (whether they are colleges or corportations) are acting as Big Brother to their subscribers. There was a story a while ago which talked about ISPs acting as a firewall for the stupid. Well, now we have them looking out for our interests by tracking down virii, trojans, P2P. I guess one could see as vaguely similar to how cable companies control what is fed to their viewers. Great. Can't wait till Roadrunner picks up this feature.

Too bad that piracy doesn't really hurt the little guys. Studios need these people to make movies. However, they don't need all the leaches at the top of the system. All they usually do is make phone calls and SHMOOOOOOZE. Piracy hurts the fat cats at the top. Hence the ad campaign.

  13. Apple hubris and why it needs the rumor sites on Apple Blacklists "Rumor Promoting" Publications · · Score: 1

As a Mac user, I take pause when reading news such as this. Apple has a serious problem which is also one of its great strengths, hubris. It looks at the odds and then often goes against them. This has led to some amazing products, but on the other hand it has led to some of its greatest mistakes. I look at Apple cracking down on "rumor sites" and think, why? These are some of the company's stanchest supporters. They buy computers and ensure its continuation. A company is based upon customers. It needs their money to survive. The benefit of these banned publications vastly outweighs the damage. While they may leak some details about upcoming products, they drive an intense interest within the platform. A blacklist is a sickening, pitiful, and cowardly move. Apple should embrace their supporters, not make them outcasts. This is merely another example of Apple hubris and, unfortunately, nothing good will come from this.

I think a one of the biggest problems in recent years is the decreasing reliability of drives. Personally, I have experienced both the IBM "deathstar" epidemic as well as a new "beeping" issue with Maxtor drives on Macs. (See http://www.macintouch.com/maxtor2.html for more info on beeping Maxtors) I have stopped buying drives for the time being until some of these problems settle down. Fact of the matter is people don't buy shoddy products (ok you got me on Windows!).
