>A few minutes saved by calling for an ambulance via cell than tracking down a landline could save a life.
happens to be just my area. no. ambulances do not have a cellphone, and ambulances are dispatched from centers separate of hospitals (but sometimes coinciding). you wanna be fast, you get the landline of the ambulance center and a lot of luck convincing them, cos you're not a doctor or emergency service. fastest and surest way is to call a doctor, or call the emergy line 112.
one thing though: this is the dutch situation. things may differ in your country.

they dont use a cellphone, or dont use a cellphone exclusively. there's semaphones for doctors, and several other emergency channels (or at least there are here). cellphone is not an emergency channel, and should never be used for any life-threatening stuff. if it's on a cellphone, it can wait an hour.

I pay for my information by giving back information, not by being forced to watch certain content. I contribute. I pay, and pay a fair price. and you whine about me not viewing ads?

then volunteer. sending cash is an easy cop-out, and may give rise to the buying of political influence. if push comes to shove, many donaters would not volunteer. even worse: some donaters donate to all political parties to gain influence.
as you said, illegally. now if he copied it legally, you would not have a leg to stand on.

no.. it doesn't exist "because it exists", it exists because of our hunger for knowledge, which I will grant you is not always rational. I've taken apart clocks, and a lot of stuff. it made no sense whatsoever, economically. however, I now know a little about the inner workings of a clock. same with manned spaceflight. why do we do it? because we can learn stuff. many people want to learn stuff, and given the chance, they will. so why do we learn stuff? because we can.

in essence, I do this anyway. I have no cellphone, and I'm seldom at home. anything work-related will have to wait for work-time, where it belongs. need me in earlier? tell me in person. I have no obligation to stay reachable for work outside work-hours.
yes, they are, as long as no modified version of gnutella is distributed. if the software is not distributed but only used in house (for a demo), there is no requirement to distribute the source.
you're not forced to distribute. if you distribute, make available the source.

what I really think is going way too far is companies deciding who can or cannot be my friend. I have no problem whatsoever with treating everybody as a friend (yes, there are different 'levels' of friend, like all other friends.), and I have no trouble sharing with all my friends.

not necessarily. a foreign spammer is not bound by US law, and doesn't have to label spam.

a thief is more likely to change the plates then change the MAC address of the wireless card in a laptop in a stolen car..

if what you mean is resizing an image to fit the window... firefox does that
if you mean something else.. well.. I don't know.
that's the way it COULD be (theoretically). over the way it SHOULD be can be argued.

this goes very much for an occupied country, like iraq is.

families last a century. and while a company can easily change names, this is a whole lot harder for a family.
bit like fining a maffia-boss? sorry.. they did the crime. now pay the fine. it's too low to matter anyway...

I wish that were true. I get so much spam from the US on my dutch email-account...
actually... that's governments, not a single government or the government.

it's easier to feed your family in denominations of sheep than it is to feed your family on 10 dollar (euro) bills.
