in what country was Megan's law passed? I don't know megan's law, so I cant really comment on it.

it is one thing for the police to have an overview of recent sexual offenders. This is not comparable to a publicly available database of people and crimes, where someone can look up that I got caught stealing a bag of crisps 12 years ago. (no, I didn't steal a bag of crisps 12 years ago, my sheet is clean)

I am very much against the disclosure of criminal records. after you have paid your fines, done the jail time, had the therapy, and worked the social job you were sentenced to, you are supposed to have served your penalty. It makes no sense to add to this penalty by making it harder to re-integrate into society, I even think it is very much counter-productive.

Unfortunately this whole ugly story means no NVidia card for me. Maybe if they get enough (polite) responses from people announcing they will not be using NVidia products, they'll change their mind. Alright, it could be an oversight, but the whole issue could easily be resolved within 12 hours by simply releasing the source. By not doing this, and keeping the binary posted, they (IMHO) are disrespecting the whole idea behind Free Software. What NVidia should do (again, IMHO) is either release the source or stop distributing the offending product (the videodrivers). Ofcourse the latter solution will not make them very popular...

I don't entirely agree with you. I think in the case of a president, his presidency should be completely open. After all, a president is in the employ of the people. But there should be a distinction between Bill Clinton and president clinton. The man is not defined by his job, nor should he be. It's nobody's business if Bill C. likes to tie up Hillary to their kingsize bed over the weekends (purely fictional, don't go flaming me for that now :) that is his business (and Hillary's).

It just means you're paying for content you're not allowed to have. If I buy a simple compact cassette, I am also paying for the music that's not on it. so I borrow a friend's cd, and copy the music that I already payed for. I now have music, I payed for it, and I can change the medium by recording it to my HD. Pretty sure the RIAA will object to this, but that's not my problem. All recordcompanies are full of shit. When the cd was introduced in the Netherlands, the recordcompanies said they'd lower the price of cd's to about fl 25. This never happened, ofcourse.. cd's are still at fl 40. To add insult to injury grey import is not allowed any more. grey import allowed recordstores to buy their cd's in foreign countries, where cd's are cheaper. The artists had their cut, since these were official cd's. the only one NOT benefitting was the recordcompanies. bunch of moneygrabbing bastards...

Sure, I wouldn't want my kids on the KKK-members-for-the-legalisation-of-drugging,rapin g-and-murdering-of-all-non-white-people homepage. But I see nothing wrong with sites about political parties, news, gay rights and several religions. But.. I could, without knowing it, be denying my kids these resources. And I have no easy way to check this. Everyone is free to use or not use censor-software on themselves and their kids. It's your choice. the danger of kids getting sucked in has existed for years. Those on the net a little longer than the latest hype will know about MUDs, and this could be a legitimate concern. but as for satanic??? sure, it's a picture of a pentagram. It's not dangerous, it's a five-pointed star. It looks nice. What I would think a bigger problem is the fact that most RPGs seem to stress that a god or set of gods exist. I'm not worried.. I would expect my kids to think a little for themselves. And yes, some parental supervision might be in order, but then again IMO all parents should have a clue as to what their kids are doing.
I would say in general that symbolism and imagery are good, they teach kids that things are not always as they appear at first glance, and many many books contain quite a bit of symbolism. You didn't really think Animal Farm was about animals on a farm, did you?
