The Asus eee pc is much different than the OLPC. OLPC is designed for education, group work collaboration, low power operation, sunlight readable screen. These capabilities are not part of the Asus machine. In addition, it's looking more like the Asus will be closer to $400 than their original estimate of $200. If you're looking for an education computer, get the OLPC. If you're looking for a small cheap laptop, get the Asus.
My Motorola RAZR phone (of which I believe there are many millions in circulation) came with a PC desktop application which has a ringtone composer. This specifically allows you to take a wav or mp3 file and edit it to make a ringtone which it then installs on the phone for you. This is about as simple and open as it gets... no phone lockout here.
Since they only remove the oil from the plant and return the rest to the soil as fertilizer and since the oil they remove doesn't have any nitrogen or other minerals, then, yes, the result is that you can use the pressed residue as a complete fertilizer to return everything back to the soil that the plant needs to grow again.
Oil is basically a hydrocarbon chain with some oxygen here and there. These components come from water and CO2 in the air.
Reminds me of my second year calculus class at university. The professor would start at the left side of the blackboard writing formulas and talking to the blackboard. As he moved to the right, he held the eraser in his left hand and would erase the formulas on the left. You only had the space between his two hands to read the formulas. Of course his body was in the middle which made it more challenging.
I was responding to the GP which posited several broad hypothetical consequences far removed from the original incident of license removal (which was a submitted patch that was never committed to a release and the practice has been repudiated by every responsible poster).
The GP was complaining about adding code and the GPL license to the new code which would mean that the GPL code could never go back to BSD. This is all permitted under the terms of the BSD and BSD people shouldn't complain about this use of their code.
GPL'ing BSD code is a slap in the face that says "We will never, ever, give back. Period."
I think that this is a bit overwrought. When BSD code is modified and placed under GPL, it cannot go back to BSD but that is really in keeping with the BSD ethic which states that you can do just about anything with the code, including putting it under a closed, proprietary license (like Apple and many other companies have done). If BSD people don't like this, they should use a different license. At least with the GPL, they have access to the published code. If BSD people consider this a slap in the face, what do they consider it when a company takes their code and puts it under a closed proprietary license?
I had the opposite experience with my wife's Master's thesis. This had very strict requirements for formatting and MS Word kept doing very strange things with margins and footnotes. It would insert odd spacing and pagination and it was just impossible to get it right. Some of the pages were just grossly wrong and couldn't be fixed.
Finally, I opened the document in OpenOffice and was able to easily fix all of the problems with margins and footnotes and I printed the final copies from OpenOffice. It would have saved me a lot of time to have started the project in OpenOffice.
Rather than Dell having different 'models' of computer with Vista and Linux, what I would like to see is have an option for every Dell to 'customize' it with Linux instead of Vista. When you buy a computer, they currently let you customize it by choosing various hardware and software options. The 'Operating System' customization screen currently only offers the option of different Vista flavors. It would be nice to have a Linux OS option on that page (with an appropriate credit on the cost). This would make Linux pricing transparent... but perhaps they are not interested in making Linux pricing transparent.
My wife tried to use Word for her dissertation (English) but found that the basic page and footnote formatting couldn't meet the specs and it kept shifting after opening and closing the file. I finally switched her to OpenOffice.org which worked a charm. We got precise stable formatting.
Here in Switzerland, the local telecoms (Swisscom - Bluewin) offers the same thing... 120 channels with Tivo functions (save, pause, etc.) plus 70 radio stations plus video on demand for CHF 29 per month (about $24).
My credit card number was stollen (by an employee of a bricks and mortar store) and used to buy a bunch of cheap clothing at JC Penny. The credit card company was suspicious and called me for verification. I told them it wasn't me, etc. They canceled the transaction. I asked if they would prosecute the person who stole my card number and they said they couldn't because there was no 'use' of the number, only an attempt which was not a crime.
I've recently moved to Switzerland and I have a calculator from my new bank (UBS) that has a smart card inserted. To login to my online banking, I have to enter my pin into the calculator and then enter a code the the web site gives me (unique each time) into the calculator. The calculator then gives me a result code that I enter into the web site. Complicated but it will prevent MitM attacks.
In looking through the reasons you need to have an always-on PC (web or FTP servers, BitTorrent, or simply to make sure I don't miss any messages on IRC or my instant messaging client), it looks like most of these could be done using a Linksys NSLU2 with Linux installed. You will need to fire up another PC to access it but I hope you won't be sitting in front of the PC 24/7.
It uses only about 5w and you can attach flash or USB disks if you need more memory.
My tax form is complicated and I don't qualify for the free filing. I'm not going to pay extra for electronic filing to help the government do their paperwork. They should pay me for electronic submission... so I file my 25 page tax form on paper. The cost is minimal to print it out and postage is less than a dollar. Maybe one day they will get a clue but until then they can pay someone to enter all of those numbers into their computer (and check their accuracy).
Yes, OO.org supports track changes nicely. I regularly exchange documents working with others using track changes and never a problem.
OTOH, good old MS Word often has problems sharing files from one version to another (particularly backwards compatibility). I've used OO.org to straighten out these problems more than once.
The patent system is an abuse of the intellectual process for commercial gain. It should be abolished. It cannot be 'reformed'. The purpose of the patent system is to abuse the free inquiry and use of ideas.
I agree with you that a fence is a waste of money. Also, numerous studies have shown that illegal labor is not a drain on taxpayers.
However, you can't really stop using the services and businesses of illegal aliens. In California, the entire economy is dependent on illegal labor. If all of the illegal labor left tomorrow, the economy would collapse.
This is the real hypocrisy of the problem. Everyone is dependent on illegal labor so they shouldn't get upset but they do get up and make stupid statements.
Last week I flew from SFO to Frankfurt on Lufthansa. Halfway through the 12 hour flight the entire entertainment system crashed and had to be reset... Imagine my surprise to see the Windows CE boot sequence on my screen...
I can't believe that people in the real world build systems based on such a piece of crap.

Absolutely the most streamlined WP ever... great for touch typists... didn't use any of those dammed F* keys and didn't need a mouse for navigation.
WordStar should be good enough for anybody.
Good university library 5-10 million books
Standard university library 1 million books
Generic college library 0.5 million books

I then upzipped the file and Symantec still let 14 of the viruses through!!

I've used plastic rain gutter (cheap) instead of cable trays... works great.

It would be a lot easier to just close the Patent Office. Patents only serve to limit competition and inhibit the advance of science and commerce.
