Intel ARE delaying USB 3.0 to THEIR chipsets natively and considering how long USB 3.0 has been an official specification, it's definitely longer than normal. Obviously this isn't stopping USB 3 but you're seeing less support for it because boards manufacturers have to purchase a 3rd party chip in order to provide USB 3 on an Intel board, which is of course currently the most popular type as usual.
Sure Asus or MSI might put the chip on there but is HP, Dell, IBM doing so on their regular desktop machines for small business and end consumers? Those machines like to stick to the core chipset provided by intel and not add too many bells and whistles
Intel want lightpeak to beat USB 3, I actually want it to as well, I think it'd be fantastic if it's done right. None the less, they most certainly are deliberately avoiding native USB 3 support on their chipsets at this point in time.
Same here, oddly enough I absoloutely love my PS3 and the games on it but fuck me gently I'm also angry those closed minded idiots keep holding back the potential of that thing.
All I wanted was XBMC-HD, that's all I wanted and they continue to block it left and right.
It's been taken down time and time again and people continue to upload it, google have given up taking it down now. I find it utterly hilarious and quite relevant. As for the seriousness of the article itself, one word. Idiocracy
Humans have demonstrated time and time and time again, that they are lazy and reactionary for the most part. The transition to ipv6 is going to be absolutely huge, I'm sure everyone here doesn't need to be told about the complexities of it.
As far as I'm concerned and I feel I'm probably right, once we go to ipv6, we won't see another protocol implemented in our lifetimes (I'm in my early 30's) period, nada - not gonna happen. The bigger the internet becomes, the older it becomes and the more devices attached, the more difficult changing the protocol is. It's already going to be a nightmare, don't expect this will get easier. This is like one day telling all Americans "Sorry, no more 110v - we're moving to 240v power" - it's a pretty monumental task.
So to get to my point, if ipv6 doesn't do what we need or would 'like' it to do, sorry to say but tough shit, someone should have thought of that earlier, because it's going to be here to stay... - of course if you want to see a somewhat faster transition to ipvXX? then just wait until we are completely out of ipv6 addresses, we will then likely transition quicker... I'm sure they won't last long!
Twitter - cost to message a friend? 0$ Google maps instead of calling friend for direcitons 0$ Responding to an email whilst on public tranport - saving me time since I'm doing nothing else Facebook - see twitter Buying newspaper for weather or checking weather app? I can send an SMS for tram update information - 55c or open tram tracker. (Tram = Cable car, kinda)
Etc etc etc. I've always been a tightass with SMS, now I'm even tighter. (They cost about 25c EACH in Australia, unless you have plans with more allowance of them)
I couldn't help but notice you said " * Remove Smart Search functionality from Bookmark Manager" so I clicked the link and read the article and indeed I saw the same comment on the firefox roadmap page.
Now I just want to confirm, are they referring to the "keywords" search in Firefox? (Was called "quicksearch" in NetCaptor) As in I can type "google ham" and it will send the following string to my address bar "http://www.google.com/search?q=ham&hl=en&meta="
Please tell me I'm wrong, please please tell me I'm wrong. because I've configured hundreds of those over the past 10 years of browsing since Netcaptor and frankly, couldn't browse without them. Infact I would INSTANTLY stop using Firefox and switch if they were removed. Removing them would be utterly stupid. So before I get stupid angry, someone please tell me I've misunderstood.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of running as a full linux distro or as a Java VM? This might explain some of the functionality I'd like in Android not being included yet
I already owned a free RDP client on my iPhone, I was trying Android out to see how I like it. It's now my 'second' phone instead of the primary I was hoping it would be. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
Seriously. Nokia has a huge brand name and while I can't stand the bastards (I've delt with their support before) your average phone consumer loves a nokia phone, still huge brand recognition.
They need to maintain their brand name and release phones with Android on them, it should keep them relevant for the future.
Indeed there are some gaps. Very very long story short, I've recently gone back to my iphone 4 from an Android device. Although the apps were not my primary reason for doing so, I will say I did have some difficulty finding some apps which suited my needs.
Primarily and most importantly for myself, I'm a tightass - infact a lot of nerds are. So I want a free app which will cover my needs. Oddly enough the iphone has several free RDP applications which work quite well, I use one of these at least 2 or 3 times a week and absoloutely need it. On Android I can not for the life of me find an RDP application which supports multiple entries and lets me save them. The restrictions to the free versions are all too tight. I don't mind ads on my phone, I don't care if there's a box as I open the app or even if I'm forced to see a static ad image for 1 or 2 seconds before the app opens, I just want a free and good RDP app. No such luck.
Also, the media playback tools are frankly, ugly rubbish. It's such a giant shame as I have a 4.3" Android phone and I prefer it to the iphone 4 picture (yep, size matters) - the resolution is still good enough on the 4.3" screen (double the iphone 3GS pixel densite) it's just the media tools pale in comparison to apple. I suppose I should've done some research, infact yes I should have but I blindly went in and had this crazy idea that without these idiot apple restrictions, I'd have this amazingly powerful device to play media back with. I want to be able to copy an divx / avi file (example an episode of top gear) on to the device and just plain play the thing. You know what else? I'd like to be able to play it over my SMB network if I'm at home, I have wireless, why can't I do that? The file structure for media is ugly and gross, the device itself needs to follow a standard. Movies should be placed in X location and _!ALL!_ Android applications should check that location (only) as default for media, period. - you should be able to add more folders in the Android OS - not per application. A nice standard so that when you try a new media player, they all know where your 'library' is and can display the data clearly and simply. There is something similar to this in the system but it's hamfisted and messy. Many applications just ask you to navigate and browse the phone. I love that I can do that, I am still a nerd but I'm an aging nerd, I would like it simple and logical. Furthermore the codec support, admitedly not googles fault, I know but god damnit I had to convert stupid files on the iphone with itunes and sync via a cable (gross!) but with Android it's not much better. I want to just play back my media, the device needs more codec support (apparently the Galaxy S has licensed quite a few codecs and is better - but we need consistency across the damned platform) I could elaborate further on the media stuff and be quite specific but I'd be here for ages, I'm sure the point is clear- this is currently..'clumsy' and needs to be cleaned up, simplified and improved. This beautiful little thing has so much potential and falls short.
Podcast solutions: If you used itunes, besides the horrible sync with PC aspect of it and the nasty UI of itunes, it does 'just work' and the podcast playback tool is leaps and bounds superior. The consistency in the UI for a start is helpful. The rewind 30 second button? genius, the fact I get to see the podcast description and the podcast 'banner' or graphic? great. (I tried several on the android, like RDP solutions, nothing quite fit my needs right) I do love my Android device but oddly enough it's more the concept of what it could be and the hardware I love most more than anything. My iphone 4 has superior battery life, more reliable (at least in regards to market application upgrade and installs) it has a better UI for media playback it just falls short in the fact the screen is stupid small, it's locked down and apples ridiculous design choice of one button holds it back (4 or 5 dedicated butt
You're completely misinterpreting. The problem is I have the kind of machine that I do, yet it's still not fast enough, let alone for people with machines half my specs. Considering how cheap hardware is, it would be nice if the software used multiple cores better and at least had the option to use 1gb of ram or more purely for speed purposes.
What a complete and utter disconnection between summary and data, who the hell made this UI decision?
Seriously now, try to imagine a proper filing cabinet with the files containing the data, only the labels per file are 4" higher than each file, with stuff inbetween obfuscating and disconnecting the information? Thank christ this stupid, stupid option is able to be disabled. Furthermore, the status bar being on the address bar - ok I tried to like it, I tried not to be 'backwards' and old fasioned (as I am with classic UI in Windows) but I just can't do it, I like to see a huge, giant URL down the bottom - I want to see the full thing incase it contains something dodgy. I'm a tech, I need to know what I'm clicking - I find it an utterly stupid design decision.
Furthermore the performance is better but hardly sufficient, the performance is the only thing chrome has going for it in my opinion, sorry but I'm not going to bow down and love it just because it's googles product. Firefox has and continues to serve all I need in a browser, even then with a couple of addons ("tabs menu" - "tab mix plus" etc) I will continue to adjust FF4, FF5, FF6 to look like FF3. (Oh and I'm not too old fasioned, the awesome bar is bloody incredible)
ALL firefox needs, the ONLY thing it needs in my opinion is speed, I have a quad core 64bit machine with 6gb of ram, I browse between 3 and 18 hours a day,.. I absoloutely don't care how much resources my browser takes, I just want the best performance possible, period. Fuck copying Chrome, ugh - don't latch on to fads which are stupid but popular (see: white plugs on everything after the ipod, see: fucking glossy screens on laptops)
Ok so one particular item I listed is a bad example - you ignore the book comment, dismiss my post and then go on to insult me. Yeah,.. ok you're worth bothering with. Go away. http://slashdot.org/my/logout
The GST has NOTHING to do with these people not getting sales, the fact that goods vary from 20 to 70% cheaper, yes 70% cheaper overseas tells me / us / Australians that the GST has little to no impact on the price compared to outright greed. Books especially, online OR retail, overseas is vastly different.
This story is a disgrace and the vast vast majority of consumers are utterly disgusted by the actions of these large chains. We are currently under an oligopoly in Australia for retail options in general and it's mostly getting worse.
I went for the first time overseas recently to Hong Kong, Paris and London and within 2 or 3 days of the holiday, myself and my travel partner were utterly shocked, upset and dismayed at just how/ludicrously/ cheap everything was, clothing, shoes, internet, food - everything was vastly cheaper. Things have always been traditionally 'gouged' here in regards to pricing, the problem is it's not just the retailers being scumbags, from what I gather the manufacturers, wholesalers and suppliers to the country are bastards too. Apple for example sell products internationally with no middle man, the Apple stores purchased their goods from Apple asia where they are likely manufactured. The pricing is often not just 5 or 10% more but 20 to 50% more depending on items.
I purchased a pair of identical shoes to a pair I got in Melbourne for $280 in a genuine retail Nike store in Hong Kong for $70, I've looked at them thoroughly, several times over, they really are the genuine item yet the price difference is astounding. Our dollar has recently gained strength internationally yet goods still don't appear to be getting cheaper in the slightest.
As for the retailers, Aussie retailers are living in the DARK.AGES - they have little to no concept of what an online store is or how to run one and have been laughing up the profits for years, finally the cost of shipping things internationally has continued to drop and the AU$ risen to the point we're going overseas for more and more goods. I say a plague on all their houses, these people are greedy vermin, threatening Aussie jobs for the sake of (gross amounts) of profit.
Couldn't agree more, it's getting utterly ridiculous the amount of places I'm seeing people try and impliment ipads as a work solution, simply because they like the gadget. The entire locked down aspect of the device, lack of buttons (yes a couple more physical buttons would be useful) is really holding it back for the kind of applications people are trying to use it in.
Modding you up is pointless, someone else will do it for me. People NEED to start waking the fuck up about this stuff, if we give up all our digital rights, sooner or later they will be abused. Fast forward this situation 15 years, there might not BE another way to get content, then we're all in the shit and it's all too late. Think carefully before buying digitally people.
