Red Hat's success in EU re SuSE

I've used both Red Hat (5.1,5.2,6.0) and SuSE (6.1).
Personally I believe that Red Hat works better out of the box than SuSE. SuSE include WAY more software that Red Hat. I am willing to fiddle with my Linux to get what I want. Most people that are jumping on the wagon aren't. I think Red Hat has an advantage for this reason.
There seems. to me at least over here in the US, to be a predeliction in Europe for going for more. This is after all what SuSE seems to be doing, and they are German.
I greedily installed more than 5 GB of software from my 5 CD SuSE distro. I haven't touched alot of it yet, but what I have...wow. The base SuSE includes Beowulf, Blender...why even bother it is a lot of stuff. Go to http://www.suse.de/e/lx61/new_in_6.1.html and see for yourself.
I think that this development will force SuSE to increase their out-of-box stability and force Red Hat to include more of the software they presently bundle separately.
My main problem with SuSE is that it uses KDE by default, and requires tinkering to get gnome running. Before you bleat, the first thing I tried was "startx gnome" which turns out to be the answer in the SuSE help. That didn't work.
My problem with KDE is merely that I want to keep my Linux FREE. I am using it now and it is actually a joy...I am not too motivated to "fix" it.
This is an important market for RedHat, as the US is for SuSE. I hope both of them benefit. I think the Linux community can't avoid a benefit.
NT's Kernel is fine...there are no problems there. The bloat comes in at the interface and application levels, for the most part.
That is why NT fared so well in those benchmarks against Linux...they didn't install crap like MS Office on those boxes, it really was OS vs. OS.
As to the size of the Kernel 2MB is about right.
As to what you can install it on ?
I installed Windows NT Advanced Server 3.1 on a 486/33 w 8MB!!! I had to turn off networking during install, and then install networking after I had NT running...but it ran.
I installed NT Workstation 4.0 on a Compaq P90 with 8MB. It was unusable but ran. I later upgraded that machine to a second HD which I used solely for the swap file...it was usable barely with MSoffice 95. Things were much better when I moved the machine to 24 MB and upgraded to 2MB video memory.
I find the NT 3.5x OS to be VERY stable, much more so than pre 2.0.x Linux. NT 4 is as stable or more stable than Linux as a workstation. When something goes bad you can kill services and restart them. Just like any reasonable OS
If the GUI goes though...you have to reboot. That said the GUI is much more stable than X/KDE or X/Gnome.
NT is NOT as bad as Linux folk think. NT is MUCH worse than MS thinks. NT bears NO RELATION to what MS marketing says.
NT is the best general purpose workstation available right now. I have great expectations for MacOS X. [See Mac OS Rumors for why. if you don't already know.]
Linux is really coming along here, way ahead of even a year ago. It'll be a while yet. I think MacOS X will give a good example of what to aim for/above in the future of Linux interfaces.
Sun is the best enterprise server solution.
I use Linux for small and medium business sized servers and light database applications. The availability of Oracle and IBMDB2 is making me think of using it for larger databases, maybe I'll ask the next client to try it out.
I use Sun and Linux for special purpose workstations. I always prefer Linux for this if the application is available. (Sometimes they really want Autocad OK ?)
I ran into a bank that needs a supercomputer, I still don't really understand thier application. I am going to try to fit the app to Beowulf.
I know this went a bit off topic, nonetheless I hope it was thoughtful, if not neccessarily useful.
Seriously...I have several hats I wear. One is as a hockey instructor. I have to be at my appointments not on time, but early. Ice time is expensive an my clients have already paid for it. Normally I am late for everything...my Palm beeps so that I know to stop reading/. and go to the rink. It even reminds me which rink to go to.
Once I get to the rink I have to remember my lesson plan. Sometimes I have to draw a little picture to remind myself where everybody goes in my drills. Guess where I store that info. Handmemo for the Palm.
Sometimes I don't have a plan ready. So I search through all my old plans and pick one that fits the current situation. Try that with a daytimer.
This thing helps me make sure my clients keep putting $40/hr in my pocket...I am certain I would have pissed off several people by now otherwise.
Not good enough for you ?
Recently I had an appointment while wearing my technical hat. During the meeting I was asked a question. I didn't have the answer in mind, but I knew I had info about it. That info was on my Palm. I got the data (a bug report from bugtraq) told the client. The client was impressed, by the fact I could answer the question and by my "facility" with this cool little computer. I got the contract.
Between these two crucial uses I have "paid" for my Palm about...315 times!!!
And it is cool to ahve something to do at my girlfriends figure skating lessons and dance shows. (Asteroids)

That should be...
"...I have "paid" for my Palm about 31.5 times."
At this point it is worth noting I have only had my Palm IIIx for 34 days.
That means it almost "pays" for itself daily.
I don't even use it as much as I think I can...wait'll I get the GPS and the modem!!!
Huh ?
I've attached it to a special printer...
