That reminds me of something they said about the game "Battle Bots". One of the only weapons-related rules is no electrical attacks.
Apparently, having the other bot short out with a slight puff of smoke turned out to be too anti-climactic a way to end the match, and defense against it would raise the bar too high for most competitors (insulation, anti-shock electronics, etc).
As usual, when Apple needs money it goes to Microsoft (and Windows in general), hat in hand, asking for some crumbs. I just remember many years ago, when Bill Gates (in a HUGE favor to Apple) invested MILLIONS into what was, at the time, a quickly sinking ship.
Well, considering DNS is used almost EVERYWHERE, and any vanilla install of Linux has DNS, SendMail, Apache, etc, its hard to say. IIS is on the list for MS, but a vanilla install of WinXP doesnt have IIS. And while IE is also on the list, MS's Auto-update will (I think by default after the first prompt) go out to MS and download the latest updates.
Just like all the hypocrits around here, they can slam MS, but its all really about the Benjamins. Once Bill's advertising people start flashing the wad, the old trashtalkers backpedal REAL fast.
I'll only be impressed if they add in a real trash-talk routine. I want to computer to tell one of these guys something like "your game is weak", or "nice move- does your husband play chess too?"
Its funny how hypocritical most people are. Judging whether Eolas is friend or foe? So in other words, they are alright, as long as they only go after M$. But who gives a shit whether Nutscrape or Slowzilla are violating their IP- as long as they only sue MS.
to switch what? He is talking about free programs, and you are trying to create some stupid browser war arguement.
Google toolbar, in itself, is a great thing. But adding in the pop-up blocker only makes it better. As I already stated.
BTW, Nutscrape was the reason I switched to IE, and I have been a happy user ever since. I see no compelling reason to switch back, but thats just my own feelings. You are free to feel otherwise.
I think a pop-up stopper is essential. I used to use History Kill, but it isnt free (and I suspect its kind of buggy).
I always used to Google toolbar, but now it has a pop-up stopper. Which is just another reason to use it!
I also recommend Ad-Aware by Lavasoft (www.lavasoftusa.com); this program will remove any spyware that may get on your computer. The basic version is free, and the updates are free.
Last, you NEED a firewall. The best I have encountered is from www.zonelabs.com- it is called ZoneAlarm. The basic version is free, but the higher versions have some really nice features. If you would find the features useful, its a reasonable investment.
I had read several months ago about a cheaper, faster means of conducting MRIs so they could be used more routinely, and by more clinics (meaning those with less funding).
Its sad that it takes a dual-processor machine to beat something that, on the Windows side, is one processor and costs at least half what the Apple does.
And contrary to the commercials, new users find WinXP to be just as easy to learn as OSX.
Not only that, but I happen to like having more than one mouse button. Fight the mono-button tyranny!!!
In the context of his sentence, "their" is the only possible correct word.
Just for everyone playing at home:
Learn the difference between "there" and "their". Also study "your" and "you're". And I know its confusing, but "two", "too", and "to" also all mean different things.
If you can get all those down, you will probably improve your writing skills by at least 80% beyond most of the other mouthbreathers on the planet.
Look up "enterprise" at dictionary.com. Definition #2 is "A business organization."
Meaning that, if MS is going to be an enterprise software company, they are focused more on selling things TO enterprises. Since little Billy can use wordpad or whatever to type his report, he doesnt have as great a demand for a word processor as a secretary who needs to type letters or reports every day. Likewise, little Billy probably wouldnt find a use for spreadsheets or database software (Excel or Access), or even slideshow presentations or enterprise email clients (there's that word again), like Powerpoint or Outlook.
Little Billy can probably get by just fine with Wordpad and Outlook Express, which are included with Windows. Thus, MS Office DOES meet the definition of Enterprise software.
Nah. If you want silly stupid internet drama, Slashdot presents it ALL, baby. Its kinda like the "Talk Soup" of the internet, just without Greg Kinnear.
MS is already primarily an enterprise software company. Just because little Billy uses WinXP Home Edition doesnt mean MS's bread and butter come from selling it to him.
The BULK of MS's money comes from MS Office, and the bulk of that money comes from corporate licensing. Relying on sales of OXP Upgrade at Wal-Mart just isnt going to pay the bills.
So actually, MS is just getting people to recognize what they actually ARE, rather than what they are perceived to be. Much to the chagrin of the anti-MS zealots here, who see the Windows Boogie-man hiding under their beds and in every closet.
And besides, even if your conspiracy theory were correct, it doesnt change matters. If a majority of voters in his district were bank robbers, that wouldnt allow him to justify smaller penalties for bank robbers.
The problem is that (as per the RIAA), that this IS an epidemic. However, it is a civil rights epidemic. Granting governmental authority to a non-governmental body is a GROSS violation of how things should be done. Im personally surprised the DMCA hasnt been challenged just on those grounds.
So basically, they are trying to contend that, because MS is a monopoly, they should be omnipotent prognosticators who patch security holes before they are even discovered. Either that, or they need to have a patch available ten minutes after the bug/exploit/whatever is discovered.
Hmmm, I dont know, but in the world I live in, it takes times to fix problems. Especially when you need to test for unintended consequences; its hardly intelligent to fix one exploit but create a few bugs or exploits in the process. Especially considering these patches need to be installed on mission-critical servers.
NOOOOOO!!!!!!! M$ bought out the EFF!!!! Dont believe them!!! This is all a ploy by M$ and "Dollar" Bill Gate$ to take control of all our computers so he can rule the world!!!!!
Dont believe the hype!!! Slashdorkers, we must continue the fight!!!

Linus was quoted as saying "How many fuckin' browsers do we NEED, anyway?!?!?!"

Very insightful.

lets try really hard to make even LESS sense in our next post, shall we?
Anyone else know about info on this?

IMO, that is a feature, not a bug.

Unfortunately, I dont think it will be left in. Sigh...
I dont know about anyone else, but Half Life really got annoying once you get to Xen. And what was up with that stupid big-head boss thing?
This just in. Network security over at Valve really, really sucks.
Praise be to Linux, Amen.
