So guys, go back to class, and quit posting about adult things, like what goes on in the IT world. We are doing just fine w/o you.
just another example of linux dogma, or the 'linux party line' as I like to call it.
The reason Linux is a non-comercial product is because it is being made by non-professionals. So just like everything made for 'the community', it ends up being self defeating, just like the community.
Now I have no problem with innovation, but there is definitely an undercurrent of people within the linux community (as evidenced by 75% of/. posts) that enjoy Linux just because its "alternative". If Linux every became a mainstream OS (unlikely at best, but for example) I bet most of these people would switch to some other "alternative" OS. If you cant be interesting, you can at least be different, right?
you cant be that dumb, can you? you are telling us that the reason Linux is a counter-intuitive, non-user friendly P.O.S. is because M$ has a strangle-hold on the OEMs?
Sounds like a cop-out to me. If Linuts is so good, it should be able to stand on its own merits. As it stands now, it is unapproachable to non- Linux/unix users. I have tried to get into it a few times, and couldnt get past the failed attempts to get a video image or a network connection; and I work on servers for a living. I shouldnt have to be a Linux expert to install it.
Also, once I had it running on a machine, and sat there thinking "now what?" I have Office, and all the games I like are MS only. So what purpose does it serve me personally? Nothing from my standpoint.
About the only thing I would like to use it for at work is to have an FTP server on a low end machine, and maybe have DNS running. But for something that simple it doesnt seem worth my limited time.
you definitely do NOT have a clue. They didnt make a demonstation of network security; they broke in like a swat team just to show they could, then they bragged about it to everybody who would listen. If they really had noble intentions, they would have worked with the Army to tighten things up, instead of getting in and poking around. Did they get documents and sell them to a foreign power? who knows? maybe they did. That is why they are getting investigated, not just because they made the Army look bad. Dont like the laws? Either change them or move to another country. We have freedom in this country, but that doesnt mean you can violate other peoples person or property. If you want to justify the ease of an action with the right to do it, go sell drugs on the corner to school children. Hey, its easy money, right? and if they really cared they would have police officers at every street corner.
I disagree. There are proper ways of doing things, and ones that dont publicly embarass the probably very hardworking and overworked people keeping the whole US Army network working. The fact that they dont have time to become completely geeked out security freaks is because they need to do other things that little script kiddies dont have to do, like work, spend time with their families, and complete projects. If they wanted to really help the army, they could have taken their info and given it, without shameless self promotion, to their people and offered suggestions on how to tighten up the whole thing. So I say screw em. If they want their 15 minutes on the back of other people, they get what they get.
NEVER hire anyone for a computer related job that does not have a computer at home. If they have been doing networking for a long time, they should also have a home network. This is a MUST, because it reveals the personality of the person you are hiring; if they dont have a computer or a network, they dont personally see any value in it.
Of course anything related to MS cant have their own user group, especially if its related to something as complicated as a porgramming language.
Everything related to MS is run by drones who have Bill Gates voice repeating...buy microsoft... must kill linux... buy microsoft... must kill wordperfect... must kill netscape... wait, netscape killed themselves... must kill mozilla... wait, mozilla sucks... must kill... some other junky browser...
Ironically, while I live in the country where you're free to make as much of yourself as you're able (yeah, the US), the more that I make, the more I have to help others up to my level. I fought damn hard to have the meager little life that I have today, and I get a little out of sorts seeing portions of my paycheck handed to those not willing to try as hard.
Ah, I know a Limbaugh-ite when I smell one. Let me ask you- what exactly is holding you back? I dont see anyone telling you you cant make more money. Also, taxes are lower now than they have been in a very long time.
Hey, Im sorry you are buying the 'over taxation' b.s. hook line and sinker. but it just doesnt agree with the facts. Also, lets say they magically lower your taxes by 5%. what is that magical 5% going to enable you to do that you cant accomplish now? I dont know how much you make, but if its low, than you arent paying that much in taxes anyway. and if you are making a lot, then hell, you are making a lot; what are you complaining about?
It just seems like the same old boring, non-reality based argument that Limbaugh preaches. I dont consider myself either a republican or a democrat. But occasionally I listen to that guy, and its really just agrivation listen to his total pro-big business spin on everything. I have never heard anyone so biased loved by so many people since Adolf Hitler. Good thing Limbaugh isnt telling people to kill abortion doctors, thats for sure.
Also, I have to add that you have NOT gotten where you are all by yourself. You had help, and didnt even know it. Your taxes provide for a police force that allows you to work and live, for the most part, without fear of bad things happening to you. Has anyone in America's family been kidnapped and sold into slavery? Things like that STILL happen in parts of the world.
Another thing your taxes fund is the armed forces. Without having them there, do you think the US would be around as a country very long?
Your taxes were also responsible for enforcing laws that create order; this allows you to do things like have a legally enforced claim on real estate, or own a business, or work at a job for an acceptable wage, and with safe working conditions. They have funded things like making sure cars are safe, and get safer (seat belts, air bags? The auto industries fought those). So, I hate to burst your bubble, but you are just getting ahead on the selflessness of other people. Dont complain when selflessness is forced on you; otherwise move to a country that doesnt provide for you like we do. I know I would rather have 75% of something than 100% of nothing.
The reason they are there is called Public Works. The responsibility of a GOOD (not a corrupt or greedy) government is to look out of the welfare of ALL people, not just the wealthy or influential.
If you want that kind of government, maybe you can find the next corrupt shithole the taliban will claim as their own. They didnt go in for all that soup kitchen, public education shit either.
You know what else your tax dollars are funding, that you may not agree with? The Centers for Disease Control, and various Public Health Departments. They make sure that harmful pests like rats and mosquitos get killed and wont spread harmful diseases. The public health clinics are there to treat people that cannot afford to go to doctors, so they cant further spread diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis, Tuberculosis, and lots lots more. Soup Kitchens are there so that people who are homeless and starving to death dont kill you for your precious wallet. Shelters are there so homeless people dont have to sleep in alleys and parks. Dog catchers (Animal Control) is there so strays arent running all over the street, tearing up garbage (nice way to increase the rat population), and spread rabies. Public Education is there so that EVERYONE, not just the chosen few, have the oportunity to improve themselves and become productive members of society. Unfortunately, your redneck ass will probably never read this, but your uninformed opinions are obviously based on some backwoods, unthinking conclusions (probably inspired by Rush Limbaugh).
I work for a local government in a major city. I can say that what MS is proposing sounds like a great thing. If you knew what you were talking about, you would know how hard it is not just to get money for *anything*, but especially IT stuff (and especially x10 IT stuff for security). Reasons we use MS- they are reliable, they have great support, and you dont have to hire either a 12 year old kid or a bullshitter consultant to support their stuff (like is the case with linux). Face facts, there arent enough qualified linux people to go around, while there are millions of *qualified* MS people; this doesnt mean every MSCE knows what they are doing, but there are definitely more qualified MS people than Linux people. ALSO, if MS is willing to do the work and set up New Orleans as a model of what can be done, good for them. I hope their plan works out well. There are always lots of things we would *like* to get done, but there is only so much time and so many resources. For MS to do this is really good of them; I dont see Debian going to a major city and saying they will hook them up. Do you?

Its sad that you equate the GPL with your right to life free, smoke pot, and breathe. However, in the real world (the one over here with the blue sky), MS needs to have anti-GPL verbage to protect their own closed source IP. If you know what the GPL says, and what it entails, you will see why MS has to make sure there is no GPL code being used in their products. Thats not being evil, thats living in the real world where what you and your employees do has real consequences. Grow up.
As has been said countless times before, WinNT/XP should never crash unless you have crappy hardware or memory. Just because you can get Linuts to run stable on your Packard Bell with the $5 Best Buy memory chips doesnt mean MS makes a bad os. It just means you made bad purchasing decisions with your hardware.
did anyone read about the true 3d displays that are being worked on? If you combine that with a game that can accurately model a real-world environment, that equals some seriously bad-ass deathmatches.
it may as well be Uncle Sam, since they can show some restraint in what they do with the info. I read an article about an AS400 the Columbians were using. The data center was seized in a drug raid, and turned over to America. What they had was an extensive data-mining operation, and it was able to put together personal information on FBI agents, Government officials, judges, their families, where they live, etc.
So you can bitch and whine about Big Brother, but at least you know what they are doing, and for the most part what they are going to do with it. But what about people like that, who have all your information, and unknown motives? Thats the more scary prospect, I think.
Its basically a PR thing.
The sales of NWN on PCs is what is paying the bills; the Mac and Linux ports are basically Bioware's way of shutting up the very vocal babies on the internet. Its an expensive way of shutting them up, since it obviously wont even recover its costs, but oh well.
any company would have to be completely stupid, even dumber than Apple, to purchase AOL.
Why would anyone want to buy a business based on dial-up when everyone is switching to broadband? And as more people are becoming net-literate, the warm fuzzy blanket of an AOL install becomes marginally important.
Of all the people that used to use AOL, I only know two that still had it at the beginning of the year. One got rid of it because she could never even get a modem connection. My other friend basically just keeps it so he can keep his buddy list (he has broadband now). So basically his AOL is just a paid chat service.
No wonder the AOL-TimeWarner merger was labeled "Worst... Business Deal... Ever!!!"
