    Wasn't that the actual plot of the movie 2012? That the earth's core was slowing down and all that energy was being transferred into heat instead, causing the mantle (which was made of water for some reason) to boil?

    I think I actually tuned out most of that movie because the science was so atrocious.

    They recycled The Core?

    It bothers me how often I hear absolutes with regards to "If not for XXX, life would not exist on Earth."

    But it's true. Ex falso quodlibet. If the core would spin only slightly faster, I'd be the richest man of the world!

    Another possibility would be to neglect a systematic, distance-dependent effect (either because nobody thought of it, or because the effect is as of yet unknown). For example, say that due to some unknown effect the light intensity decreases slightly faster than 1/r^2. Then we would overestimate the distances of far away galaxies. Since all standard candles would be affected the same way, we would not detect it by comparing the distances calculated with different standard candles.

    Further studies will show that the core is not only slower than thought, but slowing down quite rapidly. The estimated date for the core to stop spinning at all is December 21, 2012.

    Actually, it might just be. The radioactive debris is going to be pretty diluted by all that water. And we did detonate dozens of nuclear weapons in the pacific ocean with relatively small negative effects. (there was the japanese fishing boat crew that got directly into the path of the fallout, and we ruined the islands we set them off on, but other than that, it's all good)

    You think so? I'm pretty sure it's only the damage done by nuclear bomb tests which is responsible that the year of Linux on the desktop hasn't yet arrived! :-)

    Yeah, and in 1000 years scientists will use those ratios to draw conclusions about age/climate/whatever, and will get completely bogus results because they will not know about the effect of this spill. BP has damaged future research! :-)

    and no, i'm not in the seafood industry or even within 1000 miles of the Gulf.

    Given that you said you "watched live video feeds (for hundreds of hours (Go CRAW! )) from the well area during the capping process" I conclude you're working in the drilling industry. After all, that's not something you do fur amusement, right?

    Maybe ATMs never go wrong for the simple reason that it's vastly more easy to attack the card/PIN side of the system than the internal ATM side (note that the outside of ATMs does get manipulated by criminals), and therefore nobody cares to try the latter?

    You probably also believe that if you download a file and a cryptographic hash for that file from the same server, a match between the downloaded and the newly computed hash proves that the file has not been tampered with?

    "Local mean time" is just as arbitrary. What's wrong with having noon at 11?

    The bad thing with DST isn't that noon isn't at or near 12:00. The bad thing with DST is that there's a one-hour switch twice a year. Otherwise, I couldn't care less if the sun reaches the zenith at 12:00 or at 7:47.

    No. If you can determine it algorithmically (as is the case with CET/CEST), then you can simply add the algorithm and give the user the option to switch off the automatic adjustment and do it manually in case the rules change.

    What exactly is the title bar? The title part of the window decorations? That one I don't want removed because it has program independent functionality (and I hate it if programs take that away from me; with the exception of some very specialized widgets where you'd not use that functionality anyway).

    My main use of the address bar is to look at it, and see where I am.
    My second most use of the URL bar is top use it for copy/paste of the current URL. There might be some menu option or keyboard shortcut for that, but why bother to search for it?

    First of all, you can't get most people to shut up about what happened at the doctor's office.

    Even those people will generally be selective about what they tell you. I doubt many speak about their STDs. Or about what they talked with their psychiatrist.
    And the fact that most people speak openly about it (is it actually really most, or does it only feel like that?) doesn't invalidate the rights of those who don't want others to know about their illnesses or other medical conditions.

    Exactly. If someone photographed the contents of your filing cabinet, you'd be more likely to not notice it that if someone stole them. That's because the photograph is a copy. The original is still there. If someone stole your filing cabinet, you'd notice as soon as you want to look up something.
