This is why we need to institute some sort of punctuation mark to indicate sarcasm people. This comment seems to be sarcastic to me, but this guy could really be serious (because |we need robots to kill our fellow humans, alone we can't seem to do it|)

My proposal, which I have suggested before is to use the "|" or pipe to distinguish sarcasm. As in, |now that this is on slashdot, it will totally catch on|. See how useful this could be?

Time and time again I have heard the same argument for defense spending: it creates jobs. But that is a stupid argument. All government spending creates jobs. But some spending is wasted on killing people, and the rest makes life better.

Damn, I am sorry I was away to respond quickly to a fairly interesting post. Contracters. Pork. (pr0k?) Politics. We must do something about campaign financing, and quickly, because corruption is becoming a very serious problem in america. Missle defense is cleary 100% defense contractor hand outs, which is so shockly obvious it disturbs me that everyone doesn't notice. NASA also exists largly to hand out money to contractors, but if we have to hand them money, I would rather we did it exploring space instead of devising new and inventive ways to kill people.

I'm going to miss my GSM "sliver" when I go back to the states. I have this samsung here in Paris that is just absurdly tiny. And it has about a gazillion features, and wireless internet that is very nearly useful. And cell phone (un portable) coverage is only 10-15 times more expensive than it is in the states.

It still has a high cool factor, like an led "service" slight that has user-configurable colors. I will never understand why the GSM phones are so much cooler, but they are. Maybe that's where my 50 a month for 120 minutes goes.

Some apps are designed to be intuitive and easy to use. Other are designed to be powerful and efficient for a trained user. Multibutton mouse make apps like shake and maya very efficient to work in. The maya interface, for example, is a nightmare at first. Its is confusing and essentially counter-intuitive. Once you get going with all your mouse buttons, your modifier keys, and the most efficient (and complex) contectual menu system ever created the interface becomes sealmess and godlike in efficiency.

And it requires three buttons. Because it isn't supposed to be easy to use. A mac out of the box is meant to be very easy to use, hence, one button. The amount of text on slashdot concecerning this issue is shocking, but lets get this out. You don't need three on a mac, but you can have them if you need them, which you might. In one sentance: Macs ship with one button for beginners, but allow more for advanced users. There is no should here, its flexible, like it should be.

If you are making duckpins II I am sure this is adequate. The art has progressed far beyond this point, however, and I think anyone who has been exposed to Maya or lightwave gave never settle for less. I think graphics software is something that will be hard to get to a very high level with OSS. Modeling is complex, nightmarishly complex. Maybe you can write nurbs out be hand. But what about trims? Blends? How about Subdivivsion services? And can the oss community come up with something that handles all these essential tools...and is as efficient to use as something like Maya?

I am sure the answer is no. Sure OSS can make a gread word proc, even an operating system. But don't forget, the source for Maya is longer than win2k.

If you use a macintosh you get this functionality, and I like it even better than the AZERTY layout we have to suffer with in france (I am an an expat though, and not used to the layout). On a mac (yes with os x as well) you can press option-e then a letter to get an "", as in été, option-i plus a vowel to get a an in hôtel...etc, see keycaps for details. Its not as fast for typing at speed, but its a very functional and simple solution to this problem. And it gives you a keyboard that works for all the rømäñ letter languages.
