  1. Thats Nice on Athlon 64 3400+ Reviewed · · Score: 1

You are obviously not a hardware enthusiast (this may sound like a flame but i just feel too strongly about this)... You can easily overclock for economical reasons without sacrificing cpu life. I've done this for years and continue to do so. As long as you know what your doing and have proper data from research (from reviews like this)you can take a sub $100 dollar processor and have it run like one for over $400 for years). The best part is that if you have the right components and you know how to tune your system you may even run more reliabley then systems running in spec with lower quality hardware (mobos, heatsinks, powersupplies, etc.)

    Example:
I've overclocked processors by 50% (in terms of prices... a sub $100 dollar to a $500+) an example of such a processor that has been running for a year is by tbred b aiuhb core xp 2100 from 1700 or so mhz to 2400 mhz and a 66 mhz gain in fsb (which is huge as it's from 133-200 mhz). Note that no athlon xp that amd released ever surpassed the 2300 mhz level or the 200 mhz fsb (even the 3200 + barton) so that tells you much money i've saved. I bought in mid december of 2002.

The processor has been active for most of it's life either folding(when i'm not doing anything), gaming, or divx encoding.

  18. Sadly.... 25 Million is not that Much on Apple Announces 25 Million Song Downloads · · Score: 2, Insightful

Apple is probably the largest seller of online music and 25 million doesn't sound like a lot compared to the billions that other formats like CD's make (sure they cost more to sell but the actual physical medium is worth a lot less then the $13+ amount they are sold for).

Note that I'm not discounting the ability of Apple to increase but this news story was not as amazing as the editorial seems to suggest. We all knew apple was doing well but so far $25 mil (25 million songs * 99cents) is not big in it self.

  19. NOC's Have a Purpose on Build Your Own NOC · · Score: 3, Informative

Although, some companies may have NOC's for no good reason... NOC's do have their places. I am a webhost (a small one) and our servers are in datacenters with thousands (in many cases tens of thousands) of other such machines. There are always at least one or two techs around in the wee hours of the night and a NOC is most certainly necessary to monitor all these machines and the network.

There is NO way a laptop can replace a NOC in such a case. You need a centralized area where everything is monitored. As for remote administration, it's always been pretty decent with Unix (and in our case it's linux mostly) but that just helps the NOC become more useful for us.
