  1. Desalinization seems a good bet for solar/tidal power. Hot weather is generally a contributor to draught. Hot weather often == more sun. More sun == more power for desalinization.

    JS in itself isn't bad, it's how it's used.

    What really pisses me off is the people that lazily un-necessarily link to other domains for JS. *WHY* do you need to pull your JS library from Yahoo/Google/etc instead of just hosting a local version? Doing so adds overhead (additional DNS call etc) and allows the remote host to more easily track your users. Not cool!

  3. Load time on Valve Sponsors Work To Greatly Speed-Up Linux OpenGL Game Load Times · · Score: 1

    Actually, for DOTA2 the load times were a pretty big issue for me. I could join the same games as the windows folk, but loading assets took a noticeably longer time, to the point where sometimes I'd get dropped from the game at start and then have to reconnect. This would only apply to the first game (afterwards I'd assume assets are cached). Ironically, performance on Linux once assets loaded is actually better, but this caused some pretty annoying issues.

  7. Why should EDID (or screen size) matter on DreamWorks Animation CEO: Movie Downloads Will Move To Pay-By-Screen-Size · · Score: 1

    Really, it should come down more to resolution ,or "definition" as the studios often call it. This is somewhat the case already with (e.g. movies on google play) being more for the HD versions, and blu-ray being more than DVD.

    So just have it something like
    $$$$ Ultra-HD/4KHD
    $$$ HD/1080p
    $$ 720p
    $ Low-Def (480p?)

    Even if a tablet/phone supports 4KHD (WHY, WHY do the average 5" smartphone have better res than a 15"+ LCD), you don't really get much benefit from getting an ultra-HD version in terms of viewability. It may even be worse if you're streaming or on a slow device due to lag/bandwidth considerations.

    Similarly, low-def and is going to look crappy on a big LCD TV, and even 1080p may be inferior on the really big ones. Let people get what they pay for, and give them cost/resolution options similar to what's already available.

    Win8.1 had some issues with the Catalyst drivers conflicting with other software, and Linux required the Beta drivers to run (they seem OK though).

    The heat is a bit weird in this box. It'll climb *very* quickly, but once the fan ramps up it goes down quite fast as well. The stock fans really do suck though, as the base of the heatsink doesn't even have contact with the full APU surface

    Not so much deterrent as prevention. These guy won't be committing horrendous crimes again if they're dead. The problem is - of course - that they still do spend a lengthy time in prison and the death penalty isn't really any more cost-effective than imprisonment.

    That said, you can't really argue in the way of "the perp still did it" as a point against punishment being a deterrent. You'll always have some people who do terrible things, but you can't really count those that DIDN'T commit a crime due to fear of punishment.
