This phenomenon is obvious also to those who have gone through basic training. Often in marches you have the accordian effect where the front group is fine but due to small time differences in stopping and starting, that are amplified backwards, the rear unit often is running and stopping. The same occurs on the road whereby one person brakes and then many others brake before they need to. When traffic moves, people tend to start slower than needed. This is what creates these "phantom menaces" that backup traffic for no reason.
Oh, that and people don't know how to merge correctly!
I have hardly had any spam on gmail until the last two months (having had the account for over 3 years). It's about 1 a day now, which is nothing compared to other free email programs. However, maybe I'm the exception?
The thing is, we humans don't actually perceive reality, we perceive an approximation of it, produced by our senses and mental faculties. So am I to take this statement as reality or just your perception?
"She doesn't have wacky shit like Romney or Giulliani, and she isn't scared of dissenting opinion, which, given the facsist crap that is happening in yuor country, should be a breath of fresh air for everyone."
I'm not the most educated person but my education in history and countries that truly experienced fascism hardly compares to anything I experience today. In any case, calling this country fascist is little more than using a pejorative epithet. Quoting George Orwell, "...the word 'Fascism' is almost entirely meaningless. In conversation, of course, it is used even more wildly than in print. I have heard it applied to farmers, shopkeepers, Social Credit, corporal punishment, fox-hunting, bull-fighting, the 1922 Committee, the 1941 Committee, Kipling, Gandhi, Chiang Kai-Shek, homosexuality, Priestley's broadcasts, Youth Hostels, astrology, women, dogs and I do not know what else... almost any English person would accept 'bully' as a synonym for 'Fascist'."
"In fact the only thing that really is not in her favour is that there are one fuck of a lot of Americans that are somehow terrified of women, who spend a whole bunch of energy making hysterical, wildly paranoid prophecies about how bad she would be. I find it difficult to believe that anything could be worse than the incompetent evil clowns in power right now, but there you have it."
She's a woman?
Misdemeanors are still crimes and even summary offenses are. Unpaid parking tickets would be another example. I'm not just going to say, "well if you commit no crimes, you've got nothing to worry about", however, what they will do is provide a catalyst for updating and verifying if laws are worthy to be kept. The inconvenience of criminals being caught for crimes they committed is hardly a reason to through away reasons like stolen vehicles and kidnapping tracing. You don't have any right to do a wrong.
Abraham Lincoln suspended Habeas Corpus during the Civil War (and were it not for it, we most likely would have had slavery for many more years to come). Ok, so you don't like the argument, but liking arguments has nothing to do with whether they are valid. Who cares who is making it or why, is the argument valid or not? If we need habeas corpus and it's not explicitly stated, we can add an Amendment to the Constitution explicitly stating it. Better now than at a worse time when someone could decide to exploit it.
The donor's unborn child? An embryo is not a child. Why do we need an "alternative" to embryonic stem cells anyway? Embryonic stem cells work perfectly well, and are usually considered more effective than non-embryonic cells.
An embryo is a human being and that's really the concern, you are arguing semantics here. The difference between embryonic stem cells and amniotic stem cells is that the latter do not kill the donor (the embryo). You don't kill anything. This has the positive effect of advancing research without protest from those who object to a human being destroyed (probably the biggest roadblock to embryonic stem cell research).
Funny how you don't see the anti-stem-cell people protesting IVF and other fertility programmes, even though they "kill" embryos too.
You do, they stand in front of Planned Parenthood and clinics that offer not only abortions but fertility treatments. The Catholic Church has stated more than once that IVF and other fertility treatments are wrong.
If the embryo or fetus becomes human when the mother wants it, then what is it before that? A dog, a carrot? What? The unborn is always human, from the moment of conception. What is the genetic signature of the unborn, is it human or not?
The reason there is no middle ground is because the abortion debate revolves around one issue, what is the unborn. Is the unborn always human or not? Scientifically, the conceptus (that's one cell) is an individual member of the species Homo Sapiens (which is what a human being is).
Furthermore, coma patients do not have brain activity, are they not human and alive? The key is an irreversable ceasing of the brain functions. That doesn't even describe the unborn at all.
There is no middle group on abortion, a woman can not be a little bit pregnant and a baby can not be a little bit dead.
So if they spent $14 million in advertising, they would have broke even. Maybe instead of cutting the product or development costs, they should focus less on advertising. Then again, I'm biased...
The blind elephant analogy has often been used as a proof for different interpretations of God. One blind man grabs a tail and says this is what an elephant is. Anothing holding the trunk say "You have it all wrong, this is the way it is". Yet another holding the tusk says "You are both wrong, it feels like this". Finally, the Rajah (Indian Price) comes out and asks what the fuss is about. He tells the blind men they are all correct, they just need to put together what they have and they can have a sense of what an elephant is. This also implies that one may possible never fully know what an elephant is.
To try to relate by babbling. The elephant (the collaborative project) can never be fully grasped and only through enlightenment or a guru, can we know the truth about the elephant (the collaborative project). This kind of smells like a 90s dot-com theory to me (but then maybe I only have a piece of the elephant! what do I know?)
Of course, this analogy is a bit flawed anyway. It assumes there is an elephant (is there really a collaborative project, or do you just pretend there is like George Castanza?). And furthermore, it assumes you can somehow know the whole elephant, or at least know that the elephant is more than you know. This begs the question of how you can know that!
Bad analogy, bad application....I don't know about the book, but so far, no good.
I'm going to go back to my imaginary elephant (my project at work) because even though it's not real, maybe it will be if I just work hard enough.
I disagree, what are you paying them for. Or more appropriately, what are they receiveing money for. Real names and addresses should go in the database, otherwise, why have it at all? I don't think Spamming everyone in the database is the solution, but confirmation of the addresses would be. What is the cost to register a domian now? Can't they at least verify by a phone call? A phone call to verify would take less than a minute or maybe two(~12/minute) plus pay someone minumum wage to make the calls (I'm guessing this is near 7/hour now). I do not accept any reason why this can't be done without the use of SPAM. If I gave a fake phone number, I'd pull my domain name. Seriously, what are you paying for to register the domain? Maybe I'm bitching but I've had enough of fake email addresses and phone numbers of spammers.
Is this someone in particular's DNA, or is the "snippet" a very common segment? I wouldn't want aliens cloning whoever dipped their stick in the DNA pool that day. (like Venter and Celera's Genome project).
Honestly, there are not many things that survive in space, even bacteria have a temperature/atmosphere range, along with a virus which will denature at a certain temp/pressure.
I think they have already played this. Slashdot ran an article earlier about Microsoft forcing an OS on all systems. Dell I think had a DOS-like OS to circumvent this but its not readily available to your mom and pop shopper. I would imagine that Retail computers will only increase the likelihood of Windows included on the PC.
I think an interesting thought is whether there is any market share still out there! Isn't this market saturated enough? I can see their point of view that more sales=more revenue, however, this goes against their primary business model to cut out "the middleman". They are also one of the heavier marketers. Also, is Dell going to open outlets or sell in shops such as Computer City and CompUSA?
IMHO...it sounds like you're arguing the wrong point! The problem is these crops are sterile! Companies give this stuff to these poor countries and after the harvest let them know it doesn't reproduce! Those poor starving children and people are then forced to a Microsoft environment by paying for each subsequent harvest. THe issue isn't whether it's Gene Altered, starving people could care less, but they know if they take this "poisened apple" there will be nothing left next harvest.
