oh jesus christ, stealing not a victimless crime and deterance has been shown to work in this case (they prosecuted 1 in a million file swappers and 15% of kazaa and morpheus users turn tail and ran away).
I bet when they pass this law it'll destroy the illegal sharing over peer to peer networks, even though they'll still only prosecute *gasp* one in a million. And really, who the hell cares but the file swappers? If you're going to sell crack in a public place, visible to everyone, you get what you get IMO. I gave up piracy a long time ago because I came close to getting caught and I don't feel as though my rights have been infringed upon.. It scared the living shit out of me, but I shouldn't've been fuckin around
This is in line with sociology too: sure, harsher penalties shoudn't deter, but the fact that it's a totally open, public network that does not require anyone to physically go anywhere means it's 'monitored' in the eyes of some. And certainly when some p2p users leave, it'll strengthen the chances for remaining users to get caught, so more will leave and so on.
1. Some of the language for the first patriot act was written under the Clinton administration, probably to be put into one of his imfamous crime bills.
2. It was approved 98/1 (Feingold was the only one) by the Democrat's Senate, and 337/79 in the house.
Get off your liberal high horse, jackass, both parties want your soul.

my cheap little camera streamed just fine into iMovie, played fine, edited fine (I made a special effort to use most of the new features including the iTunes crap, even though I really don't care).. Donno what all the fuss is about.. I kind of don't like how it's not full screen anymore.. although I have 2 monitors running at 1280x1024 each so I guess that's why. I just don't see what everyone's talking about.. maybe I should try it on my roommate's 1st gen iMac.. too bad it doesn't have firewire........
I use iframes on my website to avoid learning PHP.. does that count too? or is it exempt because it doesn't stay static while navigating.
The funny part is, my website makes 0 dollars, would that mean I'd have to pay anyway? or would I be below the threshold?
If I get a bill.. All you motherfuckers are gonna pay. You are the ones who are the ball lickers! We're gonna fuck your mothers while you stand there and cry like whiney little bitches..
$180 on pricewatch? how about $188 for a real card that will actually be supported for a while (the ATI does driver support about as well as trailer trash do child support).
lookie here, the 9500 lost in every single test vs the 4400, and even the 9700 lost a few.
ATI sucks for support. For a couple of months you couldn't play BF1942 with your 9700's because they're so unsupported. Also ATI's looks like crap and drops more frames.
nfiniteFX anyone? nfiniteFX (which is going to be prevelent in DoomIII) isn't on ATI cards and never will be. This feature provides true-to-life textures and was first featured in the GeForce3 (Don't buy a Geforce4MX, they don't have this feature and they don't have the FPS of the GeForce3)
This short gain by ATI isn't like 3dfx. 3dfx released the voodoos 4 and 5 when the geforce 2's were out, at 1/3 the price.. total slaughter. Well that and 3dfx was so mismanaged even Enron cringed.
Well, while reading along I couldn't help but notice the gigantic Microsoft flash animation at the top of the screen. Not to jump to conclusions but MS is helping pay to keep wired up (either that or wired loves MS so much they'll give space away for free, take your pick).
I bet if people were a bit more paranoid about the insecurity of their OS, they'd start to notice that all their computing problems are MS's fault.
I haven't been hacked because I have a firewall and I use my windows machine for nothing but games and making sure my web page works right on IE for Windows (Does this thing comply with any standards or is it just me?). My friend's two firewall-less computers were hacked, however, and so have many other people's computers.
I have a feeling that one of these days one of Microsoft's competitors is going to launch a marketing blitz targetting these holes and pointing out that this isn't just "no big deal." With a small amount of effort you could install a keyboard logger and get credit-card/social security numbers.. important stuff that noone wants given out. That's what I call big shit, and maybe a couple of class-action lawsuits (over security holes) later, MS's PC OS division will be up "the creek" and crumble.
Bill Gates said himself: "If we make a flop in this market, we'll be dead in five years."

I should really start out by saying that I have never owned and Intel chip, my PC is an AthlonXP. I'm about to attempt to put an end to any dispute, and I'm going to use Forbes as my main source (because I think the man might know a thing or two about money, because he's got a lot more than me).
After the PC market's recent downturn, AMD was facing tough times. However, unlike Intel, AMD has little diversity in chip manufacturing. Recently, Intel announced their 3ghz processor with hyperthreading (a way of fooling software into running more efficiently). So AMD cut 15% of their employees shortly after.
Not that anyone needs to be reminded, but when a company cuts jobs, it doesn't just mean that they will have less employees, it also means that they will pay taxes. In addition to their current financial problems, just 5 days ago, AMD converted $300m of debt into stock, which will hurt their economic standing in the future, and by extension, the present (the news left AMD's stock in shambles at $5.90).
Just a bad time for PC CPU mfg.ers? Well Intel's doing great, so how about that?
So whether the article said it directly or not (I read it 5 times and I think it pretty well did), AMD will not be competing in the PC market for a while. Their 64bit chip might help bridge the gap between 32bit and 64, but it has to come out first, and then it has to beat Intel's benchmarks on 32bit applications (which I could presume it will not). It will beat it in UT2003 though, hopefully that'll be enough!
wow my first post on slashdot's main page and I messed up on why market equilibrium shifts
AMD makes other stuff besides PC chips that we can use.. like flash memory... and moon pies
Lots of people find E-bay as an excelent source of macs. In fact, one of e-bay's top sellers are powermac G4's!
this is because macs don't devalue as fast as PC's, because they last so damn long!
My friend has an orginal macintosh that's been beat to hell and though it was bought in 1984, the 18 year old mac still works great!
One of my friends is a huge freebsd guy, he's an astrophysicist, and he was looking for a mac and found out that the best price/performance ratio was with the DP 800mhz G4's. Apparently there's a place or two that sells them refurbished for $2,200.. being as how I've been using one of these machines since they came out (I think I got #105 or something), I can strongly recomend them.
Remember to get an nvidia in them though! ATI cards for mac are in short selection and have REALLY crappy drivers! Also I agree with the other guy who said to get aftermarket RAM. Here's what apple says about aftermarket RAM:
"If you don't purchase memory directly from Apple, make sure that the RAM modules conform to the JEDEC specification. Check with your memory vendor to ensure that the RAM module supports the correct timing modes and that their Serial Presence Detect (SPD) feature has been programmed properly, as called out in the JEDEC specification. "

I think the Quartz Extreme technology is only supported on NVIDIA cards.
Quartz extreme is supported on any AGP video card for mac.
I even got it to run on my sister's Beige G3 with a PCI ATI Radeon 7000 using PCI Extreme
PowerPC was invented by IBM, and may I remind you that Apple's going to purchase a consumer model of the IBM Power4 (from IBM) fairly soon.
"the" gay computer.. I wonder where he got that idea..
I watched the TNN Star trek marathon yesterday..
It was Will Riker who was forced to try to convince the judge that Data wasn't human.. yeah that episode kinda sucked, even while drunk.
did anyone notice the spelling errors in his letter? pwned

you can use UFS for OS X.. about a quarter of all programs (and all MS programs) can't take that whole "case sensitivity" thing.. and neither can I

Converting debt into stock on such a large scale has consequences. Like, for instance, S & P could cut your credit rating. Of course, when the S & P does that, you have to convert more debt into stock.
Just a bad time for PC CPU mfg.ers? Well Intel's doing great, so how about that?
