    For those of you that are unfamiliar with Hutterites... They're a religious sect, similar in nature to the Amish, but not as hard-core. They are routinely in my area (semi-annually?) trading chickens for goods and such. My understanding is that they are not allowed to actually buy or sell anything.

    My policy now is that if something is supposed to last (and I can afford it or afford to do without it for a while) I make sure to buy well and buy once. It sucks though that I have to do so from brands and places that have outrageous markups though.

    More importantly, your point about it being free couldn't be more mistaken. For the vets it either cost becoming disabled or a minimum of 20 years of full time service.

    This is incorrect. My father spent 4 years in, and due to his income, receives (nearly) free health care. He must requalify every year, fwiw.

    Verizon /JUST/ built a tower on my family's property, expanding their coverage in this region. There are /plenty/ of towers left to build. Alltel is the only other carrier in the area, and we live on a freaking interstate.

Totally logical.

    Every joule of energy we get on the earth, without tapping geothermal sources, originally comes from the sun.

    Where do you propose geothermal energy comes from? I haven't read on it at all, but I would assume (standard disclaimers apply) that the heat in the core of the Earth is generated by reactions with fields from the sun as well.

    I am really sad to not see any discussion wrt the speed of gravitational waves. The fact that the researcher allegedly detected the GW at the same time as the other researchers investigated SN1987A in the EM spectrum is significant. I shudder to think how complex our lives will be if we finally discover/decide that G and EM waves are similar. I am very interested personally in the effects that would have on long range (10-18 billion years) galaxy imaging... We could learn a lot from looking with an enhanced understanding at lensing, et al. Nate

    You may think it a joke, but I find that this works well in real life... Many a time I've been able to scare other males away just by my posture, distance to my most familiar mate, or simply by out maneuvering them around other people. As a strong, big, tall, $RACE male, it's been extremely nice. You cannot discount the thoughts of others in your plans.

    Ah, were I only 10 years younger with this strong mentality now! Had I known these things then I would be in a much better place. Alas, I have no son to pass this knowledge to, so I post it to Slashdot. You guys are so lucky. 8-)

    Well, then you would sue the colo operator, wouldn't you? They are the ones who contracted to provide you with service. Would you blame the power company if it shut down your colo operator for breaching his contract with it by not paying his bill? Then why blame your colo operator's upstream provider for shutting him down for breaching his contract with them?

    Oh poor baby. Please find a reasonable view of reality, this one obviously doesn't work for us.

    I sell fireworks for a living, and fly fairly irregularly. Last Thanksgiving was my first trip by plane in a few years, and my first flight out of the country. I was fingered by the "sniffer" things they make you walk into. It most likely picked up on my shoes and hat, which I had been wearing about a week before while boxing up some cases. They let me on, at least. I thought It was pretty funny.
