No, the projector should be at one end of the room, and your players feet should be nailed to the wall around the projection screen. If anyone complains about the shadows, simply say, "I don't think I've secured you well enough. I think you need another nail."

Well, this is cool in the same way that various hardware hacks and case mods are cool. It's interesting that someone went and did this, and it's admirable that they came up with a pretty sweet solution.

But the summary is a little. . . .I don't know, breathless? Quote: Gamemasters are reduced to drawing explored sections of the map on the playing surface with dry-erase markers or using cardboard tiles representing stretches of corridor. . .gamemaster labor is reduced. . . Oh the horror! Finally, a solution to all that drudgery GMs have had to put up with for thirty years! It's a wonder no one did this sooner. No longer will the GM have to put up with getting dry-erase smudges on his hands. No more back breaking labor as he leans over the table to draw a straight line. This is at least as revolutionary as refrigeration.

But seriously, in the one long term campaign I was involved with for several years, the GM used little generic game pieces (from a Sorry or Parchesi board game) while each of the players used their own figurine to represent their character. We really only used this for marching order and combat. Combat was actually not that common. We spent entire afternoons role playing, rather than roll playing, especially when we needed to gather information.

It helped a great deal that the GM was an actor, and acted out the parts of the NPCs and monsters believably. The interaction really was the best part.

To be honest, this campaign really spoiled me. I haven't been seriously into RPGs since, because they're always slightly disappointing and lackluster. Modules are boring, hack and slash gets boring quickly, leveling gets boring. Maybe I've been unlucky, and I've encountered only one truly imaginative GM in my life.

It depends on what you're calling in sick for. Skiing? Fishing? Release of a new, long anticipated game? Those all sound fully functional. However, if you called the office because you had been vomiting all night and you were to weak to get out of bed, I'd say that were a pretty sick individual.

The ideal is that the only people you give your number to are people that you want to talk to. No doubt Dr. Knuth is careful about whom he gives his number. On top of that, he has a secretary to screen calls.

Slightly different, but similar thinking with the email. Email might make communications with Dr. Knuth more convenient for both the Dr. and the correspondent, but Knuth sacrifices this ease as a means of filtering. Someone of Knuth's stature might get hundreds, if not thousands of "legitimate" pieces of e-mail a day, after filtering for spam.

I'm not telling you anything you're not already aware of. And certainly, our presence here on slashdot indicates that we're not currently worried about interruptions. Still, one can't help but be impressed with such as Dr. Knuth if for no other reason that he's completely set up his life to do what he wants exactly as he sees fit. He wants to be let alone to think and to write.

You know you're purchasing an off brand product. If you saw the super shuffle on the shelf, it would not be obvious that it was a different product or brand.

AFAIK, Coca-cola did not invent or design the can itself. However, you can bet that whoever invented and patented the pop top on the cans we use today profited handsomely.

I think you are mistaken if you think there is any requirement to make a donation, token or not, when using Free Software for commercial use. This will depend on the license. If you are using software covered by the GPL, the only thing a company need contribute is any changes that they have made. If they have not made any changes, there is no requirement for them to give anything to the copyright holders.

"But it would be the right thing to do and they'll earn a lot of good will", I hear you saying. Perhaps it would be, but what are the chances that a company willing to engage in a complete rip off of another company will "do the right thing", or gives a shit about good will?

Some people are pleased about this because they don't like Apple. I'd like to point out that a rip-off artist doesn't care about who they're ripping off, so long as it means some sort of gain for them. If they're willing to take on Apple, do you think they'd feel more qualms or less about ripping off an individual?
