I can certainly understand why a lot of people like HL2. Personally I don't, but I won't get into that here. A 9/10 for a great (though not particularly groundbreaking) FPS that's bound to spawn a million mods seems well-deserved.
This, however, is not: "Half-Life 2 is arguably the best game ever made to date." - Chuck Osborn (PC Gamer)
Is Source the best 3D engine ever? Quite possibly. But HL2 the best game? It doesn't even have much replay value.
What's worse by far is the over-hyped reviews. Black & White was the worst offender, drawing many outstanding reviews before the game magazines realized it was crap. Half-Life 2 was nearly as bad. It's gotten shockingly high ratings (I think Maximum PC gave it an 11 out of 10) despite the fact that it's just a shiny new FPS with a neat physics engine. It's a good game, but it doesn't merit the "best game ever!!!" gushing.
You mean they're not filthy rich with twelve Ferraris and a mansion in Beverly Hills. True. But they are successful. There are plenty of healthy niches outside of mainstream pop. You can't possibly claim that King Crimson is a failure because they've never gotten any "air time". Personally, I don't listen to the radio at all, so I wouldn't recognize more than a few recent pop musicians.
I'd agree that Epitaph isn't the nicest label, and Brett Gurewitz is kind of a dick. I've seen plenty of fan photos with Bad Religion, though. Might be a new policy.

If people want to run on non-Mac hardware, draw a line in the cybersand and say "nothing manufactured before 1/1/2006 will we support".
Then you still have the same exact problem. Microsoft doesn't write their own device drivers. Hardware developers write them for Windows. Unless Apple can convince them to write drivers for MacOS too, Apple still has the same problem of scrambling to support every single piece of new hardware. It's a nightmare, and it's nearly impossible.
Yeah, the hardware support is the killer, and why they won't do it. Where would all the drivers for all the obsolete hardware out there come from? Just getting it to boot on most 3-year old systems would mean having to write tens of thousands of drivers. Not gonna happen.
I agree. But theoretically, Apple could switch to the Linux or FreeBSD kernel (rather than the strange hybrid kernel they have now), and work with OSS developers to get the hardware support they need. It won't happen, but it's an interesting possibility.
Did you ignore my link to Epitaph? Bad Religion, The Offspring, NOFX, Bouncing Souls, Dropkick Murphys, Rancid, Pennywise, and other non-Epitaph bands like Dead Kenendys, Anti-Flag, Screeching Weasel, and others have undoubtedly been successful. Some of those may not get constant radio play or platinum records, but they don't make the kind of music that fits such levels of "success" either. Indie pop labels are harder to find, but they do exist.
Bullshit. Look at Epitaph Records and other independent punk labels.
Yes, the power of major labels ruled by the RIAA are a problem. But these artists signed a contract, and they're obligated to uphold the contract. Too bad. Now they've learned a lesson.
I realized that this may not be entirely accurate. I meant to say that SCOX was about 15 when I became aware of the fiasco and the fact that SCO was full of crap.
That, and you could not have shorted it if you had wanted to anyways.
Huh?
Anyway, the stock has crashed from about 15 around the start of the fiasco to less than 5. You *can* hold onto it even though it goes up a little at first, you know.
Jeez. I better start to refer to my automatic torrents-downloads as torrentcasting!
Heh. I've got a script to queue up downloads from my dimeadozen RSS feed. The audio is never in a format playable by an iPod, but it probably fits the definition of "podcasting".
In other words, they are relying not only on security through obscurity, but also security through apathy.
Damned if it isn't working, though. There are any number of easy attacks to execute if you have some explosives and half a brain, such as the classic "leave a bomb on a train" one we saw in London recently. There's really no way to stop it, either. A dozen people scattered in various cities could fairly easily (and cheaply) cause prolonged havoc. And yet, it hasn't been happening. *shrug*
Of course. Hence inflation, which the Federal Reserve tries to control. In an online economy, the market should determine the exchange rate. As long as you have a decent medium for competition (eg, eBay), it's difficult to charge much more than your competitors.
Do you have any idea how much work is involved in making an accelerated graphics library for a closed-source OS with closed-source video drivers? Even on Linux, the NVIDIA and ATI GL libraries are much faster than the standard X11 ones.
It's not *necessarily* that much of a problem. If SDL were rewritten so that it used Direct3D on Windows and OpenGL on other platforms, everything would be fine.
Absolutely hilarious. Evolution is the very foundation of modern biology. There's a reason why Evolutionary Biology is usually one of the first bio courses that science majors will take. You, on the other hand, are totally ignorant of science.
There's also a lot of bad science on the show. One of the lines that I remember: "Terminal velocity is 9.8 meters per second squared." Which of course, is nonsense worthy of Star Trek technobabble.
Good point. Honeybot would have been kind of cute, though awkward in conversation.
So they took a perfectly good metaphor and blended it into nonsense. Yep.

Okay, maybe I'm just slow, but why wouldn't it have been possible to short SCOX? I almost did it myself back when it was up around 15.

I don't. I was simply making a point.

Not an Arlo Guthrie fan, I take it?
You don't need to Google for it: all the wacko conspiracy theories you can eat
Though honestly, this is interesting.
Oh, it will still have lots of shiny new "technologies" for developers who want to lock themselves into Vista and XP. But that's about all.
