I checked the temperature of my motherboard with SiSoft Sandra. The readings I got showed that it was too hot indeed. I was skeptical of Sandra's exact readings, however, so I posted a note in the forum and received some good suggestions for alternative programs to check the temp with.
Not very smart, are you? You smell your computer burning, but you start up Windows anyway (most BIOSes have temperature monitors built in) and mess around. Just...wow.
Or "emerge mythtv"
Ahhh, aren't Gentoo and Debian wonderful? There's no way I would use an RPM-based distro for anything that's not a straight desktop or web server. Doing anything after the install on Fedora/Mandrake/SuSE that's not explicitly supported in the distro is a nightmare.
Not quite. "emerge -k" works only if you have a binary package. Gentoo doesn't provide many official binaries, just the ones on the CDs. Fortunately, they usually provide the big ones that take forever to compile.
A distro based on Gentoo would probably provide the most flexibility. Add a GUI installer and "control panel", provide binary packages, and you've got an awesome distro.
But that's not what Linux needs, IMO. We need standards. Specifically a standard package format and/or installation API. Cause right now, it's just unfair and unreasonable to software developers that they need to release an ebuild, a.deb, and three different.rpms for Fedora, SuSE, and Mandrake whenever they want to write software for Linux.
Does lack of command-line use make an Operating System inferior?
Um, yes, I would say the lack of a powerful command line does make an OS inferior. There are dozens of tasks I perform that are so much easier when I have tools like find/grep/awk/etc at my disposal. That's why many of us use stuff like Cygwin when we have to use Windows. You just can't duplicate certain tools in a GUI.
And in this case this not only aplies to the hardware but to the OS as well, because in order to get the same amout of functionality you get with your latest OSX release you'd have to buy quite a bit of extra Software to your WindowsXP Home edition.
Um, or I could just buy an x86 PC without an OS (those do exist, ya know) and put Linux on it. This is Slashdot, after all. Some of us actually do use Linux, not just talk about it.
And yes, you can run Linux on PPC too, but try buying a Mac without an OS.
that the freezing point increases as the pressure decreases.
Um, yes exactly. That means that water will become a solid at a HIGHER temperature under HIGHER pressure. Think about vacuum distillation for a minute if this is confusing you.

Face it: Linux sucks until "it works" for Joe Average.
How did this get modded up? That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Thanks, but Linux works just great as a server and a desktop for those who know how to use it. Yeah, it sucks so much to have 7000+ packages I can download and install with one command. *sigh*
I prefer esync && emerge -u `qpkg -I -nc`
The first command updates my esearch database after doing an emerge sync, and the second makes sure that every single installed package is checked.
And to respond to the troll grandparent, if you don't know what a cron job is, Unix/Linux is not for you.
Oh, but the stereotype about Gentoo users compiling all the time is partly true. I'm writing this with Links as I'm installing a new Gentoo system (bootstrapped with GCC-3.4.0, whoo). X.org, Qt, and KDE take forever...
But then they couldn't charge you extra:)
I'm sure there are a few car stereos with that feature out there. It just wasn't a particularly popular thing to have until the iPod came out.
I thought you could just rip and burn your ipod stuff to a cd and just pop in the cd instead of hardwiring it to your car?
Oh wait, that might be illegal...
I've never used iTunes (or an iPod), and even I know that:
1) If you're talking about music purchased from the iTunes store, no, you can burn them onto CD essentially as many times as you want.
2) That utterly defeats the purpose of the iPod. I don't want to carry around a stack of CD-Rs when I have an iPod that can store hundreds of CDs worth of music.
Not a day goes by where I ponder solutions to my problem. However they all end up with people knowing where I live and me not knowing where they live. I will lose no matter what action I take if I take matters into my own hands.
Hm, that is difficult. But, you mentioned they have cars. Set up a video camera, or otherwise get their license plate numbers. Catch them on film doing something illegal. Submit the tape and plate numbers to the police. Might not work, but it's worth a shot.
Nothing changes in the US without money. There's no benefit to a congresscritter who supports patent reform. It's just going to piss off some corporations (big donors), and cost the taxpayers more, because each patent will require a lot more scrutiny.
And unless stupid patents start getting enforced and abused, the public (and the media) doesn't care.

I use MSDN constantly with Firefox. I don't care if it "looks good" or not; it gives me the same information.
Incompetence? Yeah, right. In the situation you described, it's more like fraud.

It has...pop-up and ActiveX blocking. That's about it. It lacks tabbed browsing, themes, configurable extensions...
Argh. Note to self: don't post on Slashdot and vBulletin forums at the same time. That was a very strange combination of HTML and BB-code :)

Try about $12-15 on Amazon.com.

Good for you. My theoretical example, like the original poster, was assuming you already had the iPod though.
Here you go: JVC makes one with a front-panel 1/8" input. Grab your favorite portable music player and a patch cable, and you're all set.

It means they're chopping off large ranges of frequencies, so the most audible frequencies have more of that 32kb/s to use.
It baffles me that this was modded Flamebait. How? Maybe you meant "-1, Telling the sad truth about our political system"?
