Ebay vs. Musician
·
· Score: 1
and we all know who is to blame for this, dont we? yes indeed, its those "pirates"... those kazaa using terrorists keep downloading music instead of buying it...
imagine a world without those people with no dignity and no sense of right and wrong... imagine a world where everybody would just buy the cd's and dvd's and realise that its only right that britney gets 4% and the record company the rest... in that world there would be no need for Ebay to make a fuss about what could very well be "pirated" music...
Hopefully in the near future this will no longer be a problem when the DRM project will save artists everywhere (for a small fee)... lets all just do it by the books from now on...
Another good sign is that even Sony has mp3 playing devices, one of which even has the selling line "record from the net..." on their own homepage... http://www.sonystyle.com/home/dept.jsp?hierc=9687& deptid=9687
"record from the net..."??? On the one hand they wanna cripple the fair use but on the other hand they release mp3 players that "record from the net..."? If you have the cd yourself why record from the net? for all those REALLY FREE mp3's made by people who cant get a record deal? yeah sure... that's just the same lame excuse that people who want kazaa to stay up use...
It happened with mp3 players... first there were only weird hong kong made mp3 players... but when sony and all the big boys saw how much money those hong kong guys made they all wanted a piece of the pie... the only thing that can break those corporations from doing anything they can to make more profit is their greed... I mean, they stick together quite nicely when fighting for their profits.. but as soon as they find out a way to make even more money by not sticking together they suddenly forget their partners in their lil axis of evil...
"The manufacturers cite the superior audio quality, and 3-dimensionality of the new formats' reproduction as the reasons for customers to embrace these formats."
apparently the new format is superior... surely you dont want to listen to the classics using inferior quality? oh my god the inhumanity of having to listen to that horrible quality of cd's... thats just sooo yesterday... as a matter of fact i wont buy any new cd's from now on... ill wait till this new revolutionary system is finally released. upgrade or die!!!
oh p.s. burn walter benjamin's blasphemic essays about history...
first of all FUCK DRM...
that being said my hopes are that the greed of the "entertainment" companies will eventually be the downfall of this system.
It's like those first discman-mp3 players... started out with some obscure brands from hong-kong first making those. of course irritating the big media companies... BUT when philips and other companies saw how much money those hong-kong companies were making with their mp3 disc-players they quickly followed.
Just like the region free DVD players or copied vcd-capable players... some unknown companies made quite a name for themselves on that market... of course now you can get region free sony players as well...
moral of the story... there WILL be money to be made in evading DRM in any of its forms... and do you really think those companies will not screw the rest of the companies if there is money to be made?
uhm compromise... with the RIAA??? what planet are you on?
actually i have tried to reason with them... well in hindsight it was a stupid effort but a couple years ago when cd prices had once again gone up i stopped buying music for 6 months. all this time i did not download anything either. i basically tried to do without music in my life.
when during that 6 month period cd prices went up TWICE... yeah thats right i gave up my protest in the sense that i got into mp3's big time.
I still vowed to never buy a cd again (although the body is weak sometimes when i just had to buy the occasional masterpiece that wasn't to be found online) and i started giving out copies to friend and family, making sure they would ask me first before buying a cd.
All this time i still had hopes for the music industry. But slowly my thoughts on the subject began maturing. realising how much music means to me and how little the music actually means to the music industry i began looking for other options and points of views.
I ended up where i am now, as i sought for a attitude in which art is free again and not controlled by money. I realised that intellectual property in itself is a shortcoming of modern society. capitalism should control many things but arts should be free of its claws as arts are the only means of selfreflection modern society has.
compromising with the RIAA is no longer an option... they made sure of that.
"HP's version, dubbed Media Center PC, is expected to sell for $1,500 to $2,000 without a monitor, depending on the configuration."
$1500 and you dont even get a monitor... surely to fully "appreciate" your recorded video stuff (which can only played on the same computer) you would need a nice expensive monitor as well...
(or is MS' plan to make people not use monitors as this helps protecting the pc from its obviously evil owner?)
As far as i could make out from the article this pc mainly copy protects the video recording. I'm kinda wondering why there is no hardware restriction on the audio/mp3 ripping from cdrom. or is there? seems kinda logical to limit audio in the same way as the video content.
is this perhaps because MS believes video recording is less mainstream and thinks it is still able to convince buyers that this is a "fair" system, while convincing mainstream buyers to not play or record mp3's is no longer possible (considering that mainstream buyers already know about how free mp3's can be) or on the other side of the coin in effect is considered a later step in their "copy-protecting" plan?
I wish it were so... I really wish i felt my serving mp3's on ftp, irc, kazaa and gnutella would have this very desired effect you describe... Sadly i doubt it
"Ah, so by that rationale, if a pig had a better personality, he'd cease to be a filthy animal. Is that true?" "Well, we'd have to be talkin' about one charming mother fucking pig. I mean, he'd have to be ten times more charming than that Arnold on Green Acres."
Just why can't a perception be wrong? if this was true there would be no need for discussions, which is of course another expression of thought which you hold so dearly.
perceptions are worth nothing and useless if they dont at least swarm around a truth.
Same holds sway for 1984 and the Bible, there are limits to what could plausably be perceived from those.

security through obscurity? :P

hehe you actually fell for that one? "smart people" indeed...

That obviously is the hard part... But the denial there is one is no solution...
