"UNIX uses separate processes more then threading. Mozilla and evolution aren't threads (although they are both multithreaded, I'm sure) - they're processes. UNIX boxes were optimized for multiple processes before CP/M was dreamed of, much less its derivatives. That's why most server programs running on UNIX use fork() instead of threads."
Modern OS's have moved away from processes(I'd love to see multitask test against osx vs YellowTAB's Zeta). They are very inefficient, we are talking 100s of cycles(on solaris) cycles to clone the process not to mention the overhead of copy on write flag for the memory. Lets not even talk about the context switching between processes and threads or interprocess communications.
Reason why most things in the unix world uses processes is because the developers are lazy, multithreaded programming is one of the most difficult things to do. Do a search for "processes vs theads" theres a sun powerpoint presentation talking about how developers should stay away from threads because of the complexity. The funny thing is, they had list exemptions, one them being performance. Or better yet go buy a book on parallel processing.
And btw, i have 9 instances of IE, Google desktop crawling my system, winamp streaming, MS Sql Server,My Sql,couple putty windows, along with 100 other processes yet it functions just fine. I could even do this while defragging my drive without any notice.
No, it doesn't. Windows can run one application quickly, but is terrible about running multiple applications.
Yawn.. Do you know anything about multitasking? Do you know NT was built on for multithreading? It wasn't a hacked up much like how PThreads was hacked into BSD. PThreads can't compete against Windows threads, hell windows supports PThreads but no one uses it, i wonder why? And how the fuck does PDF have to do with anything? Wow apple uses quartz which is PS rendering engine. Quart can rendering PDF Files which is part of PS 3.0 specification. You can view PDF files faster than windows user and Adobe Acrobat reader! Lets compare apples os x finder to XP shell, and talk about responsiveness. Open a samba share to a share with a few thousand files and tell me how long it takes. Or hell do anything with webdav. Twirling raibow disk for the win.
Note, this is on a couple year old laptop running OS X. The games I usually play are some older ones, like UT2003, Warcraft 3, Neverwinter nights, and a handful of less cpu/gpu intensive but fun games.
Your kidding right? Theres no way in hell osx can compete against xp/2003 in multitasking. OSx is pretty much single threaded, OSX(Pre tiger) used funnel locks, locking down pretty much everything. Aren't you glad your osx is based on a 30 year old os? XP uses fine grained locks and 'push locks' which have no contention problems. Luckily for you, Tiger got rid of of the funnel locks and replaced them with kernel section locks, it still can't compete against windows xp or Server 2003.
They forgot about purchasing Linspire. So you'll add $60 for linspire and $45 for
Cedega and its more expensive then OEM windows xp Home. Wow, thats competive. I'll probably get modded down for this because i'm pointing out the facts.

Windows has had a bundled windows media player since Windows 3.0 way before Real came out with media player or before Real even existed. You can make a case for the browser being removed but i can't see how you can make a case against media players.
Yeah extending RSS is bad, I mean no one would dream of extending RSS. Just look at the slashdot RSS, there's no slash:department nodes or slash:section nodes in side of it. Oh wait there is. Please buy a clue before you post. Thanks
Listen, when I've got 30 web servers banging away on a single database server
Where is your middle tier? Where is your redundancy? And you gave direct db access to web servers that on are on the public internet? So when your web server gets owned, the hacker has full access to the DB?
Every bit of the handshake,... is going to wrap up that much faster if things are faster

Wow. I'm lost for words. Seriously though, how do you have a job? This has to be the saddest architecture i've ever seen.
Apple only threatens to sue the people who can't afford to defend themselves(like kids in college). Defendants end up changing their interface/style/skin.
Right now it's way to easy for hackers to steal credit card information, or for unethical merchants to make unauthorized charges. We need to put the consumer back in charge of their own finances.
So what, you have $50 max liability by law but Visa and the other cc guys guarantee no liability. You know how easy it is to dispute charges? Here's what happens when someone steals your credit card. You get a call, "hi this is so and so from chase visa fraud department. We detected fraud like behavior. Can you confirm these purchases. Oh you didn't make them, let me close this account number and reimburse you the full amount. You'll recieve a new credit card within 10 business days".
XP Home isn't my idea of a real OS and so I'd have to wipe it anyways. I would add the cost of XP Professional to the cost of the windows box for a true price comparison. And for the Linux box, I'd add a set of Suse CD's (or other distribution).
Why isn't home a real OS? Do you need to join domain? Do you need IIS? Encrypted file system? SAP agent? Netware drivers? Most home users don't need Pro.
$199 with better stats(double the ram, double the harddrive space), its expired but it probably come back in a week. Also it comes with XP and is cheaper since i don't count rebates in the actual price. I don't see how linspire can compete against Dell and Windows when obviously its more expensive with less features.
As long as its free, people are going to equate it with cheap quality. Much like people bring bottled water(aquafina) to my office yet we have a chilled filter water tap.
PPCs have bad memory latency because of chip design, it has nothing to do with what type of memory they are running. DDR2 is crap anyway and only prevalent in Dell Boxes. AMD doesn't support DDR2 and are most likely holding out for DDR3.
Mysql is slow on Apple boxes is because Apple boxes suck at thread creation. If mysql forked instead of creating new threads, it would run 'decently'. Problem is forking is an old paradigm, threading is the new paradigm. Apple server will never suceed because its based on a 25 year old operating system(bsd). If apple would have picked BeOs they would have not had this problem since BeOs was built and designed to be highly multithreaded.
Blizard uses bit torrent to distribute updates and i must say it is the slowest piece of junk ever. The first day the patch comes out, you can expect at least 2 hours to download a 45 meg update over broadband. I usually goto download.com and download it there in a quarter of the time.
The issue was never about abuse of users in the way you are suggesting, it was about other companies (Real) not being able to compete because Media Player is bundled with Windows.
Microsoft started bundling a media player with windows(windows 3.0) before Real even existed. Now microsoft is expected to unbundle their media player after 14 years of it being bundled? You slashbotter simply amaze me.
Windows media calls DirectPlay(directx), many third party applications rely on directx. Having it do nothing breaks applications. Good luck running any game with directx crippled, hell good luck doing almost anything with directx crippled. Just what the consumer wants, a broken version of windows.
They are around ~$150 and the cheapest model at bestbuy is $115. Compare that to a VCR which are usually around ~$70 if you can even find them(hell bestbuy only carries 2 models on their website). VCR is dead, only combo models(dvd/vcr) are selling.
Very few hardware companies hold the IP rights for the technologies they implement. NDAs prevent many companies from disclosing specs to their hardware.
Are you stupid? Why would apple ship out development boxes with intel p4s on them? They could easily put itaniums in them. Lets make the developers code on a x86, but the jokes on them when we switch to IA-64 a year down the road. Yeah that will win lots of support.
