  1. My thoughts on Fans Attempting to Pay for Enterprise · · Score: 1

I ran a few fundraising efforts for my old fraternity. As it was what you might call a vanity fundraiser, as opposed to something like the tsunami effort, I think I have a little insight. First off, they'd need to figure out a way to be able to return the money if nothing actually happened. All of it. I think that would induce people on the fence to chip in. Second, they should have some tiered donation. In any campaign like this, there are people on both extreme ends. Either giving nothing, or willing to give more than you'd believe a reasonable person would. Have some levels, like $2500 for "Admiral", or something equally stupid. Then list them on the site and send them a t-shirt or a communicator (or whatever). A lot of people live this stuff, so I'm sure there are poeple who would plunk down that kind of cash. Third, you don't need to fund the whole thing. I imagine if they were able to raise 1mil, the tv production folk would realize they had on their hands some seriously rabid fans. Right now they're thinking the show failed because there wasn't viewer interest. Its not the lack of fan support that has caused this show to fail, but the fact that the show is really horrible. I mean, Enterprise sucks bad. I tried really hard to like it, and I can't watch it. If the rabid fans were actually able to put up some serious money just to get the studio to make another season of their show, the studio might wake up, can the existing producers/writers/whoever, and make the next season. Re-open the script submission policy. Get some better writting and story. You know, do the things that get people into the show. For some reason the writting on most of these sci-fi shows is REALLY BAD. It feels like they do that because the sci-fi fans are so into it they put up with the crap writting. The only new show I've been able to watch has been Battlestar G, but even parts of that make me cringe (like using "Fruck" or whatever for cursing. Oh man, just don't curse). For the most part they just feel cheesy. They don't have to be like that, so why are they? As far as the idea of raising 30-40 million by collecting $20 from each fan, holy shut. Turn off the freckin' computer and get outside.

  2. Re:Experience is key... on How Important is a Well-Known CS Degree? · · Score: 1

Experience is important, but the school matters. I think its crazy to say it doesn't. I started as a developer and turned into a manager, so I interview people regularly. Everything on the resume matters. Its really hard to gauge somebody just by the resume and interview. The better school says something. Is it going to make up for bad interview or experience? No way, but it matters. As far as "degree-factories", I will give this piece of advise. If a resume lists a school that advertises on tv, I throw it out immediately.

  4. Re:Some of the changes (possible spoilers) on Star Wars on DVD · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think all the changes are horrible. I hated them when they came out, I hate them now. I know, I'm a religious weirdo for it. Shockingly enough, even though I'm on this site, and sending a flame about a special edition star wars release (while at work), I'm not a rabid nerd. Its just that watching the movies I can see every change, and I know its not supposed to be there. Its like a woman who's really not that old going in for major plastic surgery. Look babe, cheeks don't go there. At least not yours.

I'd probably pay $150+ for a high quality version of the originals. I wouldn't take the remakes as a gift. I have the first 3 on vhs, and I plan to pick up a decent vcr and try to pull them off and make my own (crappy quality, I know) dvd's, and that'll be it till GL wakes up.

Asshole has to realize that his movie is part of the world now. He gets paid for it, but its not "his" anymore.

  5. Re:RAID 1 on Which RAID for a Personal Fileserver? · · Score: 1

Raid 1 is good, but be careful what hardware you get. I've been through a few months of system trouble. I had a machine with built in raid that was having other trouble. I built a new system, put in 1 new sata drive for the system drive, and bought a HighPoint rocket raid 100 to use the ide drives in raid 1 for data backup. The sata drive died (about 2 months old). I set up the machine again with just the raid card and drives (I actually have 3 identicle 80g WD SE's, so left one alone with the data and set up the other 2 fully formatted). Ran this system for a little while, but was having trouble. Turned out that sometimes files were either not being fully read or written! It took me a while to figure this out. Anyway, started over again, this time with just 1 80g ide drive. I still have to figure out my plan for backups. Its only been running for about a week, so I haven't got to it yet. In short, raid 1 is good. HighPoint sucks.

  6. Re:bad decision on HP: Rival Printers Mean No More HPs Through Dell · · Score: 1

HP is like a whinny baby. We have an hp scanner at work that hasn't been used for a while. I tried to download the drivers from the site, but they only have the update drivers. I called hp and spent about 20 minutes on the phone with various people. I gave them my name and phone number at least 3 times. I finally wound up with one option: pay $10 plus shipping for the drivers, to which I said fu, I'll download them from a bootleg site in Russia, but thanks. Every time I got to a new person they said, "Welcome to the new HP". I used to like HP. My dad bought a LaserJet II years ago and still uses it. Now I can't download drivers for a scanner that's a little over a year old? The new HP sucks. They better start acting like the old HP real quick. Why the hell would they stop selling printers to Dell? It seems to me that if Dell is planning on selling their own printers, cutting off their easy supply route would be a bad option. Just ranting.
