It's amazing how M$ security problems are always the user's fault when you ask a M$ person. Case in point, you blame the problem on ignorant, lazy and stupid users:
Firstly I am not an MS person I am a Unix admin but in a previous job I did both (and hated every minute I had to support windows). Secondly I am not blaming users I am blaming *ADMINS* how need to be held to a much higher standard.
I'm going to leave alone how you just called most M$ customers idiots. Why would consider someone lazy because they are forced to do all the work it takes to keep up a Windoze box?
Thank you for leaving out something I did not say. I am talking about admins not users. $MY_EMPLOYER has 6000 users and about 100 admins for their various systems (Intel, Unix, DB, Desktop, Network, Sec,....). Most people who can add a tool in the MS world consider themselves to be an admin (this is not a problem with the software per se') this is not culturally as true in the Unix sphere.
What you don't mention is that most distributions have reasonable defaults for Apache because they can. In the free software world people are free to share ALL of their improvements and that includes configurations and updates. Of course, there's no such thing as a "pirated" GNU/Linux, which eliminates the problem Google identified.
Hmm lets see... "Sure there are technical reasons why LAMP tends to be more secure than IIS" nope don't think I left that out I just did not dive into it because by in large its not the biggest problem. A properly hardened IIS7 server is not the swiss cheese many think of , its not all that bad.
As with desktop users, the only consistent trait and problem people with problems have is choosing the wrong OS. Software design, configuration, documentation and ease of upkeep are all inferior in the Windoze world - the user is screwed at every point. It's not their fault.
There is plenty of documentation out there for windows, and it can when used right be an acceptable tool and will likely not be hosting malware. Being careful is 99% of an admins job and thats true if you're on Windows, UNIX, OpenVMS, or anything else under the sun.
" The man to whom the license was granted, professor Gedis Grudzinskas, was asked whether he would screen babies for hair color. He replied that hair color "can be a cause of bullying, which can lead to suicide. With the agreement of the HFEA, I would do it.""
Abortion was probably a bad example for me to pick because it will, inevitably, cause contention over that and not the larger issue. A poster later put up insurance claims and other forms of discrimination there is no measure to the evil man can do with information evil takes little R&D and comes naturally to us. The benefits you talk about take extensive time to develop and implement.
Whenever there is a great leap forward in our understanding there are those who would turn to eugenics. In england a doctor performing sex selection abortion is now trying to get permission for a severe squint and has said he believes ever hair color is a fair reason to terminate a pregnancy (on the basis they might be mocked and that could cause them mental distress).
Information, knowledge good! what we do with it, usually not so good.
The problem is anyone out there who can install windows services considers themselves a knowledgeable sys-admin. Sure there are technical reasons why LAMP tends to be more secure than IIS but more often than not it comes down to poor configuration (running unneeded services, poor network security, poor hardening standards), lazy maintenance (not checking logs, updating software), and a lack of understanding threats (not keeping up with cert).
Linus once said of Gnome that when you design assuming you're users are idiots in the end thats all the users your going to have. Find an experienced competent admin who has cut his teeth in the real world and not in a MCSE bootcamp and you should be ok.
Probably because rather than shrug and laugh when they start a creationism museum people get upset enough that these stupid yokels are at it again to froth at the mouth. That draws Media attention. What would happen if the media printed a story and nobody cared.
Belief in something with no scientific proof is the foundation of just about every failed adventure in human-kind.
Soviet Communism? Seriously I'm sick of the humanists regime of Stallin which, incidentally, spoke of religion in similar tones to your post killing Millions upon millions of humans and getting ignored.
It turns man against man, because of different ancient social mores and savagely ignorant beliefs about the workings of the universe.
Lets get one thing straight man does not need a reason to turn against man if not for religion they might do it for, oh, political systems or something. Religion has often been used as an excuse by those in power to get people to fight for them to get, well, more power. If tomorrow nobody on the planet believed in religion there would be a *short* period where things were a bit more peaceful but very quickly those with power would find something else to motivate us peasant folk. It could be eugenics, it could be democracy, it could be the environment, and it could be social justice.
Glad I could accomodate you, as religion has been a particular pox on my existance.
That pox would involve not being able to see the forest from the trees.
Its not dishonest, its not really relevant what people thought of the Dems when they were the minority. Its easy to be strongly opposed to something when you don't have to have your own ideas because you cant do them anyway. Its easy to say we need to get out of Iraq right now until the responsibility for making such a decision rest in your hands still the Dems rallied the naive left to their cause just like the Pubs rally the naive right.
Its too bad though politically I disagree with the left most of the time it would have been nice to have gridlock again. Still what did you san-fran nan was going to be able to do her majority was built in no small part with blue dog democrats who, while wisely wanting a course out of Iraq, were not going to use the congress to run a war. I am honestly impressed at how well she has held up I would not have given her 6 months at the post.
Thanks for the link Ill book mark it for a later read..
BTW Im not praising Bush here just not whitewashing everything wrong that happened in the whitehouse *before* 2000 because he is such a boob.
Clean Sweep; I'm going to put all my cronies in right now...
Targeted firings: These people are being fired because they are not doing what I their boss directd..
Major problem: As low as his approval ratings are the house Democrats are just as low. Basically it would be a cripple fight and nobody (or everybody depending on your disposition) wins a cripple fight.
Bush could be impeached but he would not be removed and that, in the end, would help him just as it did Clinton.
It very well may come to be remembered that way but history is seldom accurate. Many presidents have tried to erase these lines (Nixon, Regan, and Clinton come to mind) to one degree or another.
Were GWB's recess appointments any less questionable than Clinton's? (Clinton's probably worse in this case)
Was the firing of certain federal prosecutes by bush any less questionable than Clinton firing *all* of them? (Probably yes in this case)
I mean this is a 200 yo power struggle between branches and the pendulum always swings, heck we have the speaker of the house trying to make herself the face of American foreign policy! all the branches are alwys bickering and its up to us the voters to wind the clock every now and again.
Thanks, I was under the impression going from HFS to ZFS was not so trivial. I thought it was more like going from fat32 to ntfs and not like going from ext2 to ext3.
Oh, so Clinton destroyed what little infrastructure was left in Iraq did he?
No, Clinton decided for a few points in the polls he wold fire cruise missiles into Iraq, the genius of Clinton is because he did not commit to anything other than killing people in Iraq he could look like a war time leader without having to risk actually fighting a war.
He wiped out what little water and power services were left. He left the borders unguarded. He gutted law enforcement.
Sort of different one committed to try and make things better (and botched it up pretty badly) and the other just used the military to get some points in the polls when he was hurting with no intention of removing the monster that had Iraq under sanctions in the first place.
I voted against Bush FWIW because being wrong about something is, well, wrong. Lying about something is, well, evil. Ignoring that someone else did the same thing because you don't hate them is, well, hypocrisy.
Bush and Clinton were either both wrong or both lying and took military action based on that.
Dems choose to ignore Clinton and Repubs choose to accept bush independent thinkers realize both were wrong.
Right because firing cruise missiles into a nation without putting your own people at risk is morally so much more superior to actually trying to change anything in that nation.
Look I dont like bush and the Iraq fiasco is a disaster but its morally not any worse than bombing the crap out of a nation so you can look tough like Clinton did.
Actually lying is making a purposefully misleading statement, saying something that is incorrect without knowledge is just being wrong.
Hypocrisy is, on the other hand, using Iraq's nuclear program as justification for a major bombing in 1998 and the balking when someone else does is several years later.
But if a product is not even in the same market (OS versus Television station) there is no trademark infringement. Hence there is a company called prime which teaches truck driving and a company called prime that delivers medical services. Seems like a quick attempt to get money by somone who cane really make it themselves.
No, its all politicians. Under Clinton the republicans held the purse strings and shot down his health care initiative which would have *substantially* increased spending. Under Bush they let programs like NCLB, and the Medicare prescription benefit through, not to mention some pork laden transportation bills.
I personally dont care who wins the whitehouse in 2008 so long as congress is dominated by a different party.
hmm currency reflects strength of economy and only strength of economy thats a new one.. Wonder why China artificially keeps its currency much lower than it would otherwise be... oh yea because that helps exports.
BTW in the US we also have states with *no* income tax
Thats the wonderful straw man that the left throws up whenever global warming goes up. While in the 90's many denied it existed pretty much everybody can look at the evidence now and see yea its warmer than it was a decade ago (though its cooler than other period of human history). Many just think it has to do with a much more active sun then we had 30 years ago. But they set up their easy straw man knock him down and declare victory.
Firstly I am not an MS person I am a Unix admin but in a previous job I did both (and hated every minute I had to support windows). Secondly I am not blaming users I am blaming *ADMINS* how need to be held to a much higher standard.

This will make going from earlier versions of OSX to the new one more of a pain because the whole disk will have to be reformatted.
